After Backspacer hits stores and gets digested for a few weeks, you're going to see a lot of people jumping on the wagon. Not that that would be a bad thing, but these are the same fairweather fans that were turned off from Pearl Jam when No Code went in another direction. I've, along with many of people here, have stuck by Pearl Jam's side through thick and thin. I just don't understand the "cool" people who didn't think it was "cool" to like Pearl Jam anymore (post Vitalogy), but then will all of a sudden "like" Pearl Jam again. I guess people have the right to do whatever they want in regards to musical taste. Am I unreasonable for thinking this way?

It does sound a little elitist - but then this is a fan forum so I say FUCK EM!

  • 10 years ago maybe, but those bandwagoners are all boring middle-aged adults with families now. They couldn't be cool if they wanted to be. ;)

it was a bit like that in the uk, but with the press as well, the first 2 albums they couldn't get enough of them.
but once they started not doing interviews or anything, it was like the band never exsisted. and they same with some fans a lot of people liked the ten album because of the grunge sound, but as soon as that changed on the next few albums, a lot of fans didn't care anymore.. why? i like you have stuck with them from pretty much day 1(sometime in 1991), not only through loyalty, but because they're a great bunch of guy, with great fucking songs. end of!
and for me, i say vitoligy, no code and yield, are probably my fav. 3

  • I dont see anyone jumping on the bandwagon at all... Reason why people "stopped" listening to PJ is for 1 simple fact... Albums post Vitalogy havent produced "radio hits". Singles that stick for 1 or 2 months arent radio sensations...

Exactly. To add to that, they haven't had a record label contributing payola to Clear Channel to shove every single down people's throats every hour on the hour all across the country as well (ie Nickelback, Hinder).
It's unfortunate it isn't about the art, it's all about the money.
I would love to welcome the bandwagoners though. It is refreshing to talk to someone who recognizes PJ actually has put out something since "that jeremy song."

  • Good point.

I'll fax over my PJ history and then if you could get back to me and let me know if I'm allowed to like the new album that would be sweet.

You cant really blame people for ditching pj after no code. They became a totally different band! I was turned off myself, but found my way back in after hearing LO2L. I dont really agree with that liking pearl jam suddenly wasn't cool.

This is actually when I became a fan. I saw them on the No Code tour for the first time- went out and bought No Code and to this day it's my favorite album.

  • I remember almost this exact same thread for the last 2 albums. I really like what I've heard so far, but I won't be holding my breath waiting for the masses to jump on.

While this album may be successful, and sell well relatively, its not going to be the kind of success where it brings lots of new fans it. Its going to be mostly the same people that always liked Pearl Jam/the kind of people that would like them anyway. I wouldn't worry about a huge new following.

Agreed. If the OP is such a hardcore fan being a member here since 2003 then he/she should remember that this gets brought up before the release of every album.

I don't really like this way of thinking. It's like you are protecting your turf. I been here all along so I feel threatened by new fans coming along who havn't "paid their dues" like I have. The band wants as many people as possible to be exposed to their music and their goal is to create a hit ablum that will attract new fans. It makes no sense to root against their goal. Or to be bitter because some people didn't stick around when the band started making abums they didn't like.

I'd be pretty happy if the general public was excited about Pearl Jam again. The band can certainly handle it at this point in their career and I think they know that too.

But again... this has been brought up every album, its like a nerosis.. Everyone wants them to get a lot of recognition and be a sucess but they attach a negative to that like "fair weather fans" so when it doesn't happen they have something to be happy about... But prob not.... the same people will start a thread a few months from now wondering why the album sales aren't higher.
  • I have been a PJ fan since 92 and like everyone here know they are the greatest band there ever was or will be and it really bugs me when i hear things like (Are They still Around) and (Ten was there only good album). Fucking Bullshit. I saw them 3 times this summer and the amount of fans that had travelled long distance was unreal. I myself have travelled to Berlin, Manchester, London twice,Florida, Canada and Poland from Ireland. So i have mixed feelings on the new fans they may get :|

Although relatively new to 10C, I know my stuff, and my first PJ show was on the Yield tour. I just love the ones that come to shows and say things like "I had Ten before everyone else," or outrageuos comments like "I remember seeing X song live," even though it would never have been played. Iot makes for awesome "before show antics."

They have a right to be a fan at their leisure -- I just ignore most of it. Not my style.

  • 1. there won't be millions of brand new PJ fans flooding the message boards, ever. maybe there will be growth in numbers, but not a "flood".
    2. as diehard fans, we should welcome anybody who is just discovering PJ. the more new fans, the higher demand for tours, the more dates the band can sell out, and therefore more show choices for us. if the fan base dwindles, we'll get very limited opportunities to see them as the years go on. there'll always be a nice core, but let's root for the base to grow.
