The scam was said to be the brainchild of Van Halen manager Irving Azoff, who also now serves as Ticketmaster's CEO. Azoff is also behind the scheme to merge Ticketmaster with Live Nation, which is under review by the Justice Department. Critics and members of Congress have said that the proposed merger would create a monopoly over almost all aspects of the music business.

  • this merger if it does happen will make ticket buying an even worse experience than it already is. Hopefully it will be denied.

I didn't go to Van Halen concerts simply because it felt like corporate scum were up to something like this. To hear that Van Halen had knowledge of these acts is extremely disturbing. The article mentions that ticketmaster pulled the same thing with Bruce and it seemed that Bruce took measures to address it. I purchased a ticket for Bruce's upcoming show at the Spectrum and was issued a paperless ticket which is probably the way most true artists will be going. I purchased tickets for NIN last week in New York and had paperless tickets. He is someone that cares about the fans as well. But he's sickened by the corporate scum that surrounds him and so he is retiring from touring. When you hear shit like this from Van Halen it almost makes you not want to go to concerts anymore.
  • Because Van Halen NEEDS more money.

    F'n pathetic.
  • We scored tickets outside MSG for $13 and $20 and upgraded ourselves to a lower section right near stage where there was a half row of empty seats...so we had 4 seats for the price of $33. The show SUCKED. no question about it. If i paid face I woulda been PISSED. FU VH- you guys are so over. Enjoy your stolen money- didnt get jack from me and the wife.

The real question is, why the hell did they go through all that trouble and chicanery, when they could have just made the scalped price the face value of the ticket, made the same amt of money, and not had to have a middle man and resort to what should be criminal activity. Not only was what the did awful, but pretty fucking stupid to boot. Are there really people out there who wouldn't pay jacked up prices to a box office but would to a scalper?

they didnt do the same thing to bruce. when tickets went so quickly for the new jersey shows (imagine that...the boss sell out tix quickly  ), people got rerouted to ticketsnow, not stubhub. and bruce has juice in n.j. and got some politicians involved, but ultimately it accomplished nothing.
If nothing is everything, I'll have it all
  • "At each of the 20 shows, the best seats were taken directly out of the Ticketmaster system and passed directly to private dealers and scalpers."

That proves right there what a liar Azoff is. Anybody read that big article in Rolling Stone about Ticketbastard recently where they explicitly said that practice does NOT happen?

    What a scumbag.

The New York Yorker had a good piece about the ticket racket recenlty, too... called "The Price of the Ticket."

Because you lose cred if you openly ask that much $$$$$$$$$$ for your tickets....I don't know how old you are, but several years ago now when the EAGLES reunited and asked $100 per ticket, their was quite an uproar...not a huge outcry, but a lot of us were thinking $100 a seat was quite a bit of cash......

..........and Alex needs another floor tom for his touring kit..........

P.S. VH hasn't any cred anyways, but that's the jist of it

Because they figured the PR damage would be far less then what it would be if they we up front about it.
  • No offense, but if anyone on this board is honestly surprised that Rolling Stone would print a lie to protect the ticket/concert/ industry.............well, geez, ya shouldn't be...they are all eating off the same plate.....Pearl Jam (and very few others) are the exception in the industry, not the rule.......

They didn't. It was actually a criticism of how corrupt and scheming the ticket industry is. When I said "they" I meant the part of the article that was quoting ticketmaster sources, not Rolling Stone. They (Rolling Stone) did not defend the ticket industry in any way. But the Tickemaster claimed in the article, and havve repeated the same claim everywhere else... "Everyone has the same access to all tickets from the moment the go onsale." I always knew that was a lie... but never saw actual evidence. Until this Van Halen thing.

wow... evh and dlr are greedy douchebags... i'm shocked ;)
  • I'm not surprised at all that Van Halen was in on this. Maybe I should be, but I'm not surprised by anything Eddie and Alex do anymore. It's been pretty obvious that they've been all about money and nothing else since they decided to fire Sammy the first time and reunite with Dave for the first Greatest Hits CD. Follow that up with firing Dave, hiring Gary Cherone, firing Gary Cherone, re-hiring Sammy for another Greatest Hits set and tour, re-firing Sammy and firing Mike so they can hire Dave and Eddie's kid and it becomes clear that the Van Halen brothers are either completely insane or are just looking to lock up the band for themselves so they can keep more of the money. I wouldn't be shocked at all if they released an album with just Ed, Alex, and Wolfgang an no lead singer (or Ed singing, which would be a trainwreck if you heard his first attempt on VH3).

Um, that would be a reasonable argument if they decided to do like Madonna or other artists who basically "auction" the best seats and charge huge amounts for good seats. At least they're up front about it. But VH was pretending like anyone had a chance to buy these but was giving them DIRECTLY TO THE SCALPERS. That's fucking fraud and you can't justify that.

And I don't think anyone disagrees that this an "If you can't beat em, join em" scenario. It's just that reasonable people think this is horrible creed to live by.
