Why don't you start posting here more often so you can PUT A LITTLE FIXIN' ON IT?
Besides, what's left to say about the wars? They're terrible, and still happening. I wish they weren't, and meanwhile it's killing the economy even further. We could really kill two birds with one stone if we would pull all of our troops from all the bases we had around the world, and stop the overseas spending, and invest it here on this soil-- Not that I'm so much into spending tons of money here, but I'd rather it be spent on this soil rather than blowing up people overseas and only inciting further hatred and anger against us.

i completely agree here. i am so sick of talking about the same things we have been talking about the last 6 years here. sick of war, sick of abortion, sick of guns, sick of patriotism, or lack there of, sick of hannity and beck and oreilly, sick of olbermann and maddow, sick of bush and cheney and the entire crime family, sick of conspiracy theories and sick of global warming. i am sure there are lots that agree with me, but when you throw away all of those topics of discussion we are not left with a whole lot to discuss here.

I've been away for awhile but I haven't seen any posts or threads on the kidnapper of the 11 now 29 year old woman in California. Considering some of us here have children and in my situation came across a stranger following my daughter who at the time was 6 years old. As soon as I came to my daughter he took off. Many times these kidnappings can happen in a blink of an eye. I think discussing and posting ways to avoid these situations to protect our children from these predators would be good for all of us to talk about.
I later checked my neighborhood for registered pedophiles and we had 6 in our city one less than a mile away.

I used to post here on the MT a fair bit.....and I would consider myself a fairly objective poster, but i got tired arguing the same discussions, and going round in circles with right wingers.... i'll get back on the horse now though. I havent used MT since the new board opened, let's see if the same shite is still going on.

I know it scares me to bits - I've got a 12 year old boy (still at risk I would say). It seems to be becoming more in the press over the last few years, it makes me wonder how many children/adults are being kept in this situation that we don't know about.
Genius, said de Gaulle, recalling Bismarck's decision to halt German forces short of Paris in 1870, sometimes consists of knowing when to stop. Genius is not required to recognize that in Afghanistan, when means now, before more American valor, such as Allen's, is squandered.

thanks for posting norm, i never would have found this article had you not posted it....Genius does consist of knowing when to stop, but i am afraid that we have no idea how to stop and we have no idea how to get out of something we jumped into with both feet with an anvil tied to our chest for the sake of making a bigger splash.....
Interesting that George Will, whom if i may remember correctly, the journalist with perhaps the biggest hard on for war in afghanistan and iraq, is calling for us to withdraw from afghanistan...go figure...in my opinion it deserves its own thread when someone with will's status makes such a drastic change of opinion, but i am tired of wasting my breath talking about him as well... i have had no used for George Will for years now...is this as monumental as when Cronkite declared the viet nam war unwinnable? IMO no, but it is definitely a sign that things are not going well when a respected journalist like Will makes such a difinitive conclusion....i am sure we will not hear anything about this on the evening news and i am sure we all know how this is going to end up, more of the same screwed up war policy.

Hey Guys, I am newbie when it comes to this forum and an australian (if you want to hold that against me). But I tend to agree with you guys their are some shit posters on here who are creating some shit threads. But this site is what we make it!
As for arguing the same points over and over again, well you can not help that some people are so blind that they do not see the truth. Or are they that stupid they just can not comprehend what is happening arround them. That is where it is people like us who need to help inform the masses so they can get to the truth.
As for the current war in afganastaion i belive it had to be done for the hope of a better life for the people of that country. But on the flip side all the civilian deaths are sickening, but are they not worth it if the country can become a better place. As for osama being responsible for 9-11 i am not sure of that? Iraq I dont belive should have been invaded, as the collation have fucked that place up real good. Well that obeservation is from what i have heard and read. I am not a religous person but i do belive that if we can help some one out, then we should!

Ok, this made me laugh. Thanks. That's the spirit of the old AMT...the other guy/gal is always blind or stupid.

glad i could make you laugh, but to some points that can be applied .
Religion is a great example of this, i beleive this theirfore you must be wrong. I have seen some great examples of quote mining used to prove points for the exisitance of god or to prove that someone belives in god. Also their was a forum on the Glen Beck oops thread, tried to use a case of that to prove that obama is a racist. If someone could belive that without going hang on a minute I should check that then they can not comprehend what is going on arround them. Another example of stupid people can be seen in the comments about this article http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009 ... 668011.htm, basically they say things like I will suport a bill of rights because our previous PM does not. This is with out putting any thought into it at all, does that not imply that they could be stupid an in need of help?

HAs for the current war in afganastaion i belive it had to be done for the hope of a better life for the people of that country. But on the flip side all the civilian deaths are sickening, but are they not worth it if the country can become a better place.
don't you think the people living there should have the choice though? i mean, considering the fact that the civilians, who we are trying to help by killing them, never wanted us there in the first place, how can we determine that such a war is "good" for the country when the people living there don't agree?
It's difficult to condense the arguments for or against the invasion and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan into a reply on this forum but I do think it's important that we as normal people, not politicians, take the opportunity to discuss them. The problems in Afghanistan don't just stem from the USA and the former Soviet Union battling for control of the country in the 70s but go back further to my own country including it as part of our overwhelmingly huge empire. When the British began breaking up the Empire (mostly after the First World War) Afghanistan was left to its own devices. When they as a people sought their own democracy they succeeded, becoming one of the most forward thinking areas in the region. However, in educating their women and investing in the future of their children they also limited the people's access to the Islamic faith- probably something to do with the funding from the communist soviet union. The USA (and the UK) weren't exactly keen on the expansion of Marxist ideals and the USA *supposedly* (I can't verify the facts, not having been there) funded the training and arming of the Mujahadeen (Islamic militia) who disagreed with having their rights to practise their religion curtailed.
Now, if Afghanistan did not have valuable natural resources I sincerely doubt either my own country, nor the USA, nor the former Soviet Union would have had any interest in the country at all. Call me cynical if you will but in my opinion the same applies to our joint invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq. If our governments really cared that much about building a democracy and challenging tyranny why aren't we at war in Sudan? You will, I'm sure, all be aware of the oppression and horrific abuses and violations of human rights going on in that country as we look the other way.
I might sound bitter here, but I can't help it. I have very little faith in my own government and (apologies if I offend any of you reading in the States) I had none at all in the US government while Bush was 'in control'. Somebody has already said here about how Obama can't fix things because he's not really in control. How right you are. Our 'developed' world is governed by money and a small minority of peoples' desire to make and keep as much of it as possible, regardless of the consequences.

The war in Afghanistan isn't going to provide anyone in that country with a better life-- and that was never the primary purpose for going into Afghanistan. It may have been an after-thought, that our intervention over there would spread "democracy," but it wasn't the reason we did it. We went over there to get Osama Bin Laden, despite the fact that W. himself said, to paraphrase, that he "wasn't all that concerned with him" just shortly after the conflict began. You yourself are unsure whether Osama was 100% to blame for the attacks, so what again was your reason for going over there?
All nations must determine who they are themselves. If they actually ask for help from other countries, it is an entirely different story, and then, they shouldn't believe for a second that aide from another country is going to come for free. There is always debt, ownership, and control tied to it.
No country helps any other country out simply out of the goodness of their hearts. There's something in it for them, and it isn't simply "YAY! ONE MORE FREE DEMOCRATIC NATION IN THE WORLD! WE DID IT GUYS!"
Know the truth before you take it as your responsibility to spread it everywhere.

Well put!
I wish I was as eloquent and knowledgable as others writing here, my heart tends to rule my head and I tend to have knee jerk reactions to things. Keep posting topics, even if it is going over the same ground, there are always new people who will look at the forum and maybe learn something or just think about things a little differently (me for example).
scorpioghost nicely put, I see the errors within my own previous statements. Which is part due to the fact I did not have enough information about the reasons behind iraq and afganastan. Did see an interesting documentary on the talabain once about how the came to power, but they did not cover certain aspects of how all that well.

Thanks very much for the kind comments, this board has been fascinating me since I joined the 10 club a couple of weeks ago.
In my job as a secondary school teacher I see every day how the mass media policy of misinformation affects us all. My students readily accept what they're told by the news or the papers. That's no bad thing, as long as they're paying attention to what's happening in the wider world then I'm happy. Hopefully in time they'll learn to question further. However, too many times has a student said to me 'well it was Iraq that bombed the twin towers wasn't it?'
Many of them were really too young to remember it properly but if you think back to that day and the way the news was reported- at least here in England on the BBC- it was a split screen, one half was the footage of the planes going into the towers (they hadn't collapsed at that point) and the other half was a grainy photograph of a man we were told was Osama Bin Laden. As it was still happening we were being told who'd apparently done it. How has it become so closely linked to the war in Iraq that (from my point of view) a significant proportion of the younger generation believes there was just cause to go to war? That 'they attacked us first'?
It's only when we start actively looking for the truth behind the headlines and behind the motives of those in control of them that we begin to learn what's true and what's not. Sadly many of us just don't have the time nor the inclination to do so. This is fair enough, but it's when we accept what we're told out of fear or wilful ignorance when I begin to worry. I've learned more about Islam since Sept 2001 than I ever would have done had that religion not been implicated in the attacks on the USA. I'll be honest here- I sought more information out of shame; that I was worried if I was on a bus, or in a crowded train station and there was a muslim carrying a backpack. It's crazy how frightened the government and the media can make us. We should be ashamed of remaining ignorant because we do have a choice to learn more.
Think how lucky we are to have that luxury- to be allowed to ask questions without fear. That's what makes things like this- a forum on a website about a band we all love- so great.

Great post.
We need more teachers like you - encouraging students to look beyond what they're told in mainstream media, to search for truths, think critically, and above all, to question everything. I deliberately limit media exposure to my daughter, because I know what a manipulation machine it is, and how it's almost solely aimed at our youths to warp their minds and buying power.

Question everything is right and when I first heard this story I thought something wasn't right about this story. From The Washington Post the story about the guy punished for cheating on his wife.
Apparently done by a radio host to see if anyone would do some fact checking if this story was true, apparently the story was not.

Yes, Great Britain has invaded and attempted to occupy Afghanistan on at least three occasions during the heady days of the "Sun never setting....", I believe the longest occupation lasted no longer than a year...and only one British soul made it out alive of Afghanistan that time....so that country's "problems" extend beyond the hands of the last three dominant world empires (U.S., U.S.S.R. and British)....in many ways, the people of Afghanistan have never been a great fan of the central government concept...for whatever reason, the rest of the world feels like they should adapt and be like the rest of us....
As to why the world is not fighting in Sudan for the freedom of the downtrodden there, it probably has something to do with location......The Sudan is close to the "Middle East", but it doesn't border on any key client states nor does its problems spill over into a nuclear weapon owning country. Location is the reason why the British invaded Afghanistan so often....protection of the Khyber Pass into the crown colonial jewel, India. Available infrastructure in surrounding countries is another reason fighting in Afghanistan may seem more tolerable to the war machine. Afghanistan is far closer to the Persian Gulf infrastructure already in place...it's closer to the former Soviet bases....it's closer to Pakistan...and to the large U.S. Air Base in eastern Turkey.
Besides who wants to fight in one of the world's largest swamps....The Sudd. N.A.T.O. is probably not well equipped to wage war in a swamp.

Why don't you start posting here more often so you can PUT A LITTLE FIXIN' ON IT?
Besides, what's left to say about the wars? They're terrible, and still happening. I wish they weren't, and meanwhile it's killing the economy even further. We could really kill two birds with one stone if we would pull all of our troops from all the bases we had around the world, and stop the overseas spending, and invest it here on this soil-- Not that I'm so much into spending tons of money here, but I'd rather it be spent on this soil rather than blowing up people overseas and only inciting further hatred and anger against us.
x2...
this place is what we make it...
"Well, you tell him that I don't talk to suckas."
Peace

I know it scares me to bits - I've got a 12 year old boy (still at risk I would say). It seems to be becoming more in the press over the last few years, it makes me wonder how many children/adults are being kept in this situation that we don't know about.
