New Pearl Jam...new AIC

"Shannon Hoon scab "
ouch...that's a bit harsh.
but I don't blame Cantrell.
And Layne would have sounded pretty silly singing rooster on his own (with no instruments). He was part of a band called alice in chains and they move on without him as they probably would have done with the loss of any other member (except cantrell).
reevaluate your priorities if this seriously occupies your mind for more than .15 of a second.0 -

I guess that was a bit harsh. I only stated it like that because:
a) he sounds EXACTLY like Shannon (live or studio)
b) I couldn't remember his name
Didn't mean it to be a slag to the guy (he was fabulous live to watch), although I guess it's now obvious that it couldn't really be taken any other way.Gimli 1993

Cantrell's solo album Degradation Trip is as good or better than anything AIC ever put out IMO. and I fucking love aic. you can't compare it to PJ because Ed writes most of the material in the band and is the only singer. Cantrell wrote pretty much all of the material ( including lyrics on many songs) plus he sang on most of the songs, even sang lead on some. and Duvall sounds nothing like Layne. That being said, I do think it's somewhat of a cash-in. It's their band though, they can do whatever they want with it. And when I hear the new songs I know instantly who it is.Bonnaroo '080

The AiC is just amazing!! I'm loving it. Layne's voice is what turned me on to "Seatle" music before any other band from there. He's been my favorite singer since, but I have to say after seeing AiC with William, and hearing this new material, this album is going to be amazing.. unfortunetely without Layne. But hey It still sounds like AiC. Even without knowing the song, the first listen through you'd know It's them, so why not call it AiC. Actually from what I've heard so far It sounds even better than the last AiC album.looking up...wondering if there is anything that you cannot do....0

That may be true. But the thing that bugs me here is that Cantrell really wants to make him sound like Layne. William is just the average guy as a singer. I mean he can sing but has no personal charisma at all. Just listen to the so called harmonics in "Check my brain" comparing to harmonics Layne sings in "Damn That River", "Rotten Apple", "Brush Away" or almost any other AiC. The band just doesn't sound like AiC anymore. Layne was one of a kind.
Still "Check my Brain" has a badass guitar riff.134xxx

just to say Jerry did not write most of the songs.it was split pretty much evenly lyricly between Jerry and Layne.the music was mostly written by Jerry however,on Tripod the credits are again 50/50.Seek,

tcaporale wrote:Have you guys heard any of the new material? I'm sure Cantrell wouldn't have done it if he didn't think he was staying true to AiC. He's not trying to replace Layne, he's just trying to do well in his honor.
Exactly. The new songs sound, musically, like AIC, which is great! And it seems as though William Duvall has finally settled into his role. He is no longer trying to copy Layne, and is instead singing in his own style, which sounds great. Cantrell really knew what he was doing, and I think it's a fitting tribute to a great musician long gone.0 -
I have only heard one new AIC song on the radio. I don't even remember what it was called. I thought it was God-awful, frankly.everybody wants the most they can possibly get

For all you AIC purists...
Don't forget that Layne was in a band called Alice N' Chainz before he ever met Jerry Cantrell. That band broke up and then Layne hooked up with Jerry and they took the name Alice In Chains.
So if anyone should be slammed it should be Layne for recreating a previous band with all new members and still calling it essentially the same name.
Of course I'm being facetious here, but my point is that its just a name and like others have said... its their name. They can do whatever they want with it - I just hope the music is great.1996: Randall's Island 2 1998: East Rutherford | MSG 1 & 2 2000: Cincinnati | Columbus | Jones Beach 1, 2, & 3 | Boston 1 | Camden 1 & 2 2003: Philadelphia | Uniondale | MSG 1 & 2 | Holmdel 2005: Atlantic City 1 2006: Camden 1 | East Rutherford 1 & 2 2008: Camden 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 (#25) | Newark (EV) 2009: Philadelphia 1, 2 & 4 2010: Newark | MSG 1 & 2 2011: Toronto 1 2013: Wrigley Field | Brooklyn 2 | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2015: Central Park 2016: Philadelphia 1 & 2 | MSG 1 & 2 | Fenway Park 2 | MSG (TOTD) 2017: Brooklyn (RnR HOF) 2020: MSG | Asbury Park 2021: Asbury Park 2022: MSG | Camden | Nashville 2024: MSG 1 & 2 (#50) | Philadelphia 1 & 2 | Baltimore 2025: Raleigh 20 -

I too have only heard one song on the radio and can't remember the name. If it's the same one sightofjeff heard, I agree with him. The song I head was pretty bad, and I like pretty much everything AIC every put out. I haven't heard the rest of the album, but I hope it's better than what I heard on the radio. I hope you're right about them not straying too far.5/28/06 - Camden, NJ

I do like some of their previous work, though they are by far my least favorite of the Big 4 to come out of Seattle at that time. I like some of Cantrell's solo stuff, too.
I wish I could remember the name of the new song I heard. It sounded like a bad AIC cover band.everybody wants the most they can possibly get

there's two songs out right now. the first one released was A Looking In View, and the second one is Check My Brain. I love both of them. I find them to be very authentic AIC tunes. And the new singer isn't really the new singer. He's A new singer, in that Jerry seems to be handling a lot of the lead duties. William DuVall seems to handle a lot of the harmonies, and rhythm guitar. I think the tunes are fabulous.Gimli 1993

Paulonious,
we've been to basically all the same shows. I'm guessing you're from winnipeg? I'm also 35.
Question: are you actually one of my alter egos? They sometimes come on here when I'm sleeping.0 -

THAT's the one I heard... A Looking in View. I've only heard it once and didn't like it. But i'll give it another try, I'm kind of just waiting for the album to come out.5/28/06 - Camden, NJ
