Don't know if I'd say horrible, but Amongst the Waves is the only song that really jumps out at me. That's the kind of PJ I love... soaring and anthemic. Reminds me of In My Tree or g2f. The rest... the riff rockers sound as generic as usual, Johnny Guitar has one of the most awkward vocal performances I've heard, and the rest sound ok. But I'll wait to hear the whole thing before I write it off.
But not that many "punky" songs hey
I dunno... Got Some, the opener, Fixer, Supersonic... plenty of short punky tunes that I doubt will have much staying power. The breakdown of Supersonic was cool last night... the funkiest they've been in a long time, but it goes nowhere and ends up being another generic riffer the rest of the song. The Fixer is catchy and upbeat, which is nice, but enjoyable as it is, it's already showing that wear-thin brightness that dropped s/t in my estimation. So there look like 4 forgettable rockers, 3 ITW outtakes (which could be hit or miss), and 4 songs that are something else and of real interest (though one is guaranteed to be a Gone/LBC style dud... Unthought Known being the likeliest candidate). I'm not sure what to make of that. There's potential for it to surprise me, but I won't get my expectations up.

I remember our other conversation once a long time ago. We will never agree. Hey, to each their own, I like what I hear so far. Out of curiousity though: which one is your favourite album? Just get my bearings a bit...
i've yet to hear why Amongst the Waves is so anthemic and epic. doesnt sound that way to me based on the two clips i ve heard. it might be but i dont know.
whichever critic said this song could bring back Ten fans is smoking some serious crack.
right now im thinking this album is about 65% great or good, 35% forgettable. pretty good in my book.

How can you not hear that it's anthemic?! The first clip had Ed's vocals soaring all over the place - very Ten-esque.

No Code, by a mile. Then Vitalogy, Vs, Binaural, Ten, and Yield kinda flop around. Didn't like the last two.

sounds more LBC or Unemployable to me. not classic rock jamming like Ten. its not bad, its just a question mark for me.

I think we are going to have to wait to hear the complete END of the song. This is where anthems are made, i.e. Alive. The ten second clip (Say it Loud part) sounds like it could lead into an anthem like ending, but I guess everyone hears differently.

Mmmm, in the top 5 we're not that far off: Vitalogy. No Code, Binaural, Yield, VS. Didn't care for the last two either. At least not that much...
So far from what i've heard, this will be their strongest album since Yield.
The short length sucks, but if it's full of quality i won't complain.
Speed of sound and Unthought Known sound like ITW type songs. High promise here.
Fixer is OK
Got Some is great - really growing on me. recommend you re-watch the Conan performance - it didn't get me at first, but now i love it.
The End (haven't heard a great copy of it or full band version), but sounds very promising
Supersonic is gonna be a "leash" type song in the years to come.
after hearing this i can safely say that PJ's streak of releasing one of the worst songs per album as lead single is still intact. the album sounds cool.
I was looking at the run times:
Supersonic 2:40
Unthought Known 4:08
The Fixer 2:57
Got Some 3:02
Force Of Nature 4:04
Speed Of Sound 3:34
Johnny Guitar 2:50
The End 2:57
Amongst The Waves 3:58
Just Breathe 3:35
Gonna See My Friend 2:48
And I'm really glad there aren't any shorties like the 1:xx songs on ITW, or like Lukin, MFC, or anything like that. I always think when I hear them, of playing them twice because they're too short. I love the ITW album but I get that feeling like I'm sitting next to someone who is channel surfing on the TV. Supersonic at 2:40 is the shortest one. I'm happy with that. I feared that the album would have a number of 1:xx or low 2:xx songs that would have frustrated me, contrasted with 5:xx songs. I like the looks of this balance.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

+1 Couldn't agree more!
Sounds like the band ruined Speed Of Sound. Ed's demo was perfection!

Agreed.

this sounds like their best album since yield and A LOT better than Avocado in my opinion. This has great slower beautiful numbers plus GREAT faster ones. September can't come soon enough.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

Ya know what I think is a shame; the fact that Pearl Jam has never really made a long "epic" recording like bands such as Led Zeppelin and Metallica have. Their longest track is Inside Job at about 7 minutes.
And now - there is only Supersonic clip on amazon...
did they block others? It was our fault...
I gotta say this was a bit of a coup finding this earlier today, Rollingstone's report on The Fixer's video also included a link to amazon.co.uk, can't help thinking they had been reading the forum!

Yeah, I've only heard 45 seconds of it and I already love this song! Wow!
