What Food would you Travel For

If you were given a year off to research a food you like, and unlimited mileage on a rental car, what food would you research? Where would you research?

I would research cups of coffee in the US, probably head more towards cafes than diners, but definitely find the perfect cup of coffee. I'd use American Scenic bways http://www.byways.org/explore/byways/ as my travel line to start along the East Coast of the U.S, and then head west.

Actually, probably cappuccinos.

  • Coffee would be cool indeed, however I would most likely travel to Pacific Islands in search of the perfect mango and pineapple.

There is nothing quite like a ripe mango.

2nd choice would be wine. Starting here in VA, the traveling to NY before heading west to Washington, Oregon and Cali.

I'd say ice cream, but then there'd be the complication of how to keep myself from expanding. :?

    Maybe salads? Yeah.

I have a 'hoagie' fetish. And it always amazes me how different areas mangle what should be a simple straight-forward formula that works (for me). For instance, growing up in the Philly area I was HORRIFIED to find out that here in Central Pa it is common to replace oil with italian dressing - and don't even get me started with the throwing fries on top of everything like they do in Pittsburgh! Anyway, I'd like to travel around and eat hoagies all day.

    run from place to place=p

i would have to agree with the BBQ choice... 9/10 times i prefer even a basic quality BBQ sauce to ketchup. might even be 10/10 times preferred. finding amazing BBQ meals around the country would just be awesome...

Costa Rica should be your destination for coffee....the stuff produced by the Monteverde Co-op (shade grown & free trade) is some of the best coffee I have ever tasted.

There is nothing quite like a ripe mango.

That is SO true. Went to Hawaii in 2006, and the first morning I ordered a breakfast plate of eggs, pancakes, and fresh mango and pineapple...

The mango was without a doubt, the best thing on the plate.

    oh my, the choices!
idk if i can pick just one. there are certain foods that i always try, whether at new restaurants close to home or when traveling. in no particular order:

    margherita pizza
    arrabbiata sauce
    french onion soup
    fajitas

    oh and bagels!
    and buffalo wings!
gawd...it's too difficult to choose!

these are all foods i get again and again, and love....and tht i have tried each in countless restaurants. hmmmm...if i *had* to pick one, i guess i;d go with the margherita pizza. man, i love all those foods but i may love pizza just a wee bit more. ;)

The interesting thing is that the BBQ style in the South changes from state to state....and sometimes from county to county.

Im actually working on an itinerary for tokyo-crunching the numbers and seeing if it could be profitable and reasonably priced-not an easy task.
Bourdain is on the travel channel (tuesdays at 10 I think), along with Andrew Zimmerman who also has a great show called bizarre foods.

    cool!

aha. i think when we first got verizon cable, perhaps we got a free trial period of all the premium channels, or some of em, thus how we saw the show. i don't think we get the travel channel. i'll definitely check again tho. i forgot about that show until this thread reminded me of it.
