  • I'm going to respond to my own thread, and hope to god that Ed reads this, because for the past 3 or 4 albums Ed has sounded 200% better live than on the album.. PLEASE Ed, no mumbling on the next studio cut! Give it your heart! Into the Wild was a step in the RIGHT direction.. please continue that with the next Pearl Jam studio album!

I agree, although 'Save You' owns. Ive recently re-discovered Riot Act, it aint bad but his voice is mumbly, esp on Love Boat Captain.

As always, I expect nothing. Except an interesting record. I like them to surprise me.

Can you imagine any of them playing with electronica at all? Some rock bands do.

I guess I can see them not recording for a bit though - I think we'll have to wait a while.

It'll depend on whats happening in the world.. peace, hope, war, who gets elected, if things are being done about climate change.. as we already know the band is influenced by these things..

I wish they would go back to releasing albums every year or two. I don't really care about their tours; I just want new music. I'd be happy if they put out Avocado Part 2, but hopefully they will try something a little different.

to me new albums are just more material to play live.

given the choice between they never ever release another album or they never ever tour again, I'll take the tours! (I'd much rather have both of course :p)
  • A rock opera!

    I wish!

I've been expecting that for years. A huge double album filled with expansive jams and all kinds of vocal experiments tied around a specific story.

I'll believe it when I hear it though!

'Pearl Jam' brought them critical and commercial success for the first time since Vitalogy. They are a bit more in the spotlight now than they were 5 years ago, and they've got a few more messages to get across these days. So I'm expecting them to take advantage of their position and make quite a political album, probably with an aggressive sound.

    it's gonna be fucking awesome!

i knows it's kinda weird, and it would have worked a lot better after Binaural was released, but I would really like them to go in a Pink Floyd-ish sort of direction. solid tunes with some experimentation mixed with some jams.
as much as i love eddie, and Into the Wild brought him to a new level for me, I like hte rest of the band just as much (if not more). Some of their earlier jams in songs like I Got a Feeling, and from today, Crazy Mary and RVM really get me excited because they are all such great musicians adn they bring hte energy. it would be great to see them jam out for a couple songs.

Totally agree..The guitar work + improvised stuff in some of those live jams(RVM, Black, Porch, C.Mary,E.Flow) is f*ckin amazing...Lets have some of that on a record..Stop these 2-3 minute garage rockers, and play some epics. Let McCready weap all over the place.

I loved 'Avocado' because the 'tunes' were back but in truth, they have never caught on vinyl their live sound. Pearl Jam fans will always treaure their bootlegs more than anything else...That is where this band's greatness lies.

  • Ed said "Avocado" felt like they were "pushing the reset button" on the band so who knows where that leads the band stylistically. With BOB returning I expect a more tightly produced record with a stronger emphasis on craft and a less "improv" feel to things (especially the guitar solos).
    So this life is sacrifice...

I feel like Ed's been lower overall in the mix on the last few albums too. That just makes his mumbling even more indecipherable at times.

I hope they drop the mid-tempo numbers... songs like Gone and LBC. They seem so lifeless nowadays. A few epic numbers in the vein of Inside Job or All or None would be cool. But given it's pretty, it's looking to lean heavily on the shorter rockers. I just hope they've learned a thing or two from bands that do this well. They really seem to like the Strokes and KoL, so hopefully they took a page from those books and wrote some shorter songs that are catchy and soulful and memorable, as opposed to the crappy generic punk stuff of the last 3 albums. Listen to Gaslight Anthem for a great example of how to make an album of 3 minute rock songs that isn't boring as shit.

While I like when Pearl Jam mixes it up, I disagree completely that their hard rock songs are "shit". The last record shows they can do it just as good if not better than everybody else (the first two songs are proof of that). At any rate, it was a clear step-up from Riot Act, which is an album I've grown to enjoy somewhat but which still leaves me empty, as if the band was on autopilot. At least the self-titled album breathed some new life and vitality into the band.

I would expect another lean, muscular record, but one that contains some detours.

When this thread began i was expecting Avocado 2. Now after what i've seen, read, heard i think we may be in for something different. I'm excited for that.

    A-motherfucking-men to both of you!
  • I expect every track to be better live than on the record... Got Some seems like it will be rocking live and I hope it will be the same for the other tracks... at 37 mins apparantly, it better be!!!
    Crowd: "UUUUUKKK!"
Eddie: "I see you've acknowledged the Ukulele"
    Crowd: "UUUUUUUUKKKKK!!!"
Eddie: "Too bad this is a mandolin you uncultured bastards"
  • 37 minutes? That's rather short. Bummer.

I'm hoping for some solid, driving-rhythm rock songs. I love "Got Some" for the intensity and kick-ass attitude. I'm hoping for some more of the same.

While all the albums have been different in their own way the formula has pretty much remained the same throughout. Some slow, some mid, some fast/punky rockers. I don't really expect anything extremely different at this stage in the bands evolution. I wouldn't be suprised to see something even a bit more mainstream on the next one.

Whatever it is I look forward to the tour more than the studio release. I could careless if they ever recorded another studio album. Just play some new shit on tour and release the bootlegs.

Seems to me a lack of formula would be a better way to put it.... A little of everything is not exactly a formulaic approach... but I guess I see what you mean.
