PS3 or Wii?

And don't tell me Xbox. I had it. Didn't like the controllers. Didn't like the fact you had to pay to play people online..

I know graphics are way better on PS3, but I have a short attention span, so Wii might be better..

Games I'm interested in..

Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart
Metroid
Bioshock
Final Fantasy
Resident Evil

I'll tally up the votes in the morning.. I'd PREFER THEM FROM UNBIASED PEOPLE WHO HAVE BOTH SYSTEMS.

If I get a PS3 should I wait a few weeks for the cheaper slim model, or pick up the fancy original?
  • Well I have all three and you've already eliminated the best pure gaming system, so other than your attention span comment there are several things to consider:

Price. Obviously the PS3 will cost you more even though a price drop is on the horizon. You will get more bang for your buck with the Wii if for no other reason that there are fewer A+ titles you will be tempted to buy.

Hi-Def. If you have a high-def TV with an HDMI input, I would go PS3 because the games will look light years beyond the Wii and you will also have the Blu-Ray option (if you care about that sort of thing).

The games you mention show you may be more interested in multi-player gaming for the Wii which would mean more controllers if you want to play with friends, as the PS3 games you are interested in seem to focus on the single player experience (co-op on RE5 is great but the other multi-player mode is meh).

You'll have fun with either one, but assuming cost is a primary factor (based on not wanting to pay for a premium online service) and you're not interested in high-def, go with the Wii since the system, accessories, and games are all cheaper.

Sad to say, I bought a Wii when it first came out. I really liked it, but wanted a blu-ray player, so cheated my warranty through Best Buy and got a PS3.. My PS3 kind of broke, and since I never played it at the time, I exchanged it for just a blu-ray player.. well I missed playing games so I bought an xbox.. I did not like the xbox one bit, so sold it to a friend..

So here I am. I want to play games again, but not on an xbox.

sell the blu-ray player, buy a ps3 and stick with a decision. :P

lol, anybody want to buy a blu-ray player???
  • Depends on the kinda gamer you are. If you're more a social gamer, where you play with friends at home more often than playing solo or online, then I would go with the Wii. It's games are more conducive to pick up and play espcially for non-gamers. If you're more the hardcore, play a game til it's 100% complete type, then I think the PS3 will please you more than the Wii. If you like old-school games, I do like the Wii's online store where you can download NES, Genesis and SNES games for 5-10 bucks. Wii will be cheaper for both games, hardware and accessories too.

I have a ton of friends who have Wii's, and honestly the vast majority of them don't even touch the thing.

While I think the Wii has it's "niche", I don't actually view it as being a 'videogame system'.

PS3, XBox are IMO real game systems that offer quality content. The Wii may put out tons of games, I think you're notice the majority of them get absolute shit reviews.

Get yourself a PS3 man. The "slim" is likely to come out in the next month or so and it should be cheaper (and do pretty much everything the current system does).

If cost is a big issue, I'd just save up. Don't settle on the Wii.

Oh Jim, I still have you on my PSN friend's list from waaaaaay back in the day. :D

    I love my PS3!

    PS3 related...
IGN.com released an article on the failure rates of the three videogame systems...

    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/101/1014486p1.html

Report: Xbox 360 Failure Rate Reaches 54%
New survey says Microsoft's Red Ring of Death contines to rise.
    by Jim Reilly

August 17, 2009 - If your Xbox 360 hasn't broken down yet or suffered from the dreaded red ring of death, then consider yourself pretty lucky.

A new survey published in Game Informer's print edition indicates the Xbox 360 failure rate has climbed to a shocking 54.2%. The magazine surveyed nearly 5000 readers, asking them about their experience dealing with broken consoles.

    Here are their findings:

    Console failure rate

    Xbox 360 – 54.2%
    Playstation 3 – 10.6%
    Wii – 6.8%

Percentage of console owners who suffered a second hardware failure after the original repair.

    Xbox 360 – 41.2%
    Playstation 3 – 14.7%
    Wii – 11%

Percentage of people who rate their customer service experience "very helpful"

    Nintendo – 56.1%
    Sony – 51.1%
    Microsoft – 37.7%

Percentage of respondents whose friends have had console hardware failures.

    Xbox 360 – 69.9%
    Playstation 3 – 12.4%
    Wii – 6%

The magazine also makes a few notes about their results:

The reason the Wii has the lowest hardware failure rate could be because console is played the least of the three. 41.4% of Wii owners surveyed said they play the console less than one hour a day, meanwhile the majority of Xbox 360 (40.3%) and Playstation 3 (37%) owners say they play their console on an average of three to five hours day.

Also, only 3.8% of respondents said they'd never buy another Xbox system because of the failure rates.

    How have your experiences been?

I'm an XBOX man myself, but seeing as the OP is asking between the other 2, I'll say PS3. I had a wii, I got bored of it very quickly and traded it in. It's nothing more than a gimmick. It can be a bit of fun at parties when you're drunk, but there are very few real quality games on it. The only one that comes to mind straight away is Zelda.
If you want proper games go for PS3.
Oh, and by the way you don't HAVE to play online with Xbox. I never play online and I love my xbox. I think it has a better range of games too.

My big problem with XBox was its value. It was a cheaply made system. Sure it is $100 less than PS3, but it was only after I got it that I realized how much more the PS3 came with.

With XBox 360 you had to pay for a wireless card separately. Chargers for controllers were separate. The Xbox had no blu-ray player.. when all was said and done, the Xbox cost more, but was more cheaply made than PS3 and you have to pay to play online. I like playing online, but will go months without playing at all, so I don't want to be tied into a yearly subscription. Figure with all add-ons, XBox + wireless card + controller chargers + blu-ray player, your talking about $700 when compared to the better quality made $399 PS3.

I know there's fanboys of the systems, but my experience with the PS3 was better than the 360. It already came with all the accessories I needed. It was a more solid system.

I have friends who are convinced xbox is so much better, which lead me to buy the system, but after owning a PS3 I was hardly impressed.

the PS3 is a great machine. id prefer it by miles out of the three. Games like Madden, CAll of Duty, Assassins Creed, FIFA, Rugby, Warhawk (simple & very addictive) and the fact that you can play all your classic old PS 1 & 2 games wins it for me.

BUT, that said, the Wii is great fun for a night of a few drinks with friends etc.... and u can get them pretty cheap. Me and my friends bought one between us, with the generic sports game, Transformers, and some other game....there's always a bit of craic when its pulled out. But it is gimmicky.

Unless there's something you can download, they got rid of the PS3's ability to play older systems games.

    Huh...Maybe i did download something!

Actually having thought about it, id suggest a Wii for the OP.

its better value, more social (not really the word to describe it, but you get me). I almost never play the PS, its a far better machine....but if you like being social in your free time you probably wont use it very much. i work and do night classes, so in the little free time i have i meet my mates.

So i use the Wii more. it's cheaper, small, easy to move, easy to use, and a bunch of you can use it. the PS is a hefty investment if you wont use it much.

    This is solid advice.

    I have all three systems and I rank them 1) 360 2) Wii 3) PS3

It sounds like you have an old-school interest in games. The Wii has an over-abundance of real crappy games, but they have around 10 masterpieces based on the Mario, Metroid, and Zelda franchises. But the 3rd party games for the Wii pretty much suck when compared to the 360 / PS3 versions. The PS3 will give you a wider selection of good games to choose from.

Your best solution is to buy both systems. If you can't afford it, decide if you would rather play Mario / Metroid / Zelda or current high-end games such as Call of Duty, Madden, and Metal Gear.

Also, don't forget about the PS3's media center. That thing is slick!
You can stream all media that's on your PC to your PS3 (wired or wireless). Movies, music, photos...
Super easy to set up too.

I play all of my music (3600+ songs) and movies (can stream HD) that I have my PC on my PS3 via the stream (also through my receiver).
You don't have to bother with media, or filling up your PS3's harddrive with files.

I don't have much time for gaming anymore, and I have small children.

Wii is the way to go.

I have almost finished Super Mario Galaxy - It is a brilliant game. So much fun. As is Mario Kart.

The only "Grown up games" I have are Rock Band 2, and Force Unleashed. Both are great.

My wife has the Wii Fit - and Personal trainer and loves them.

i don't have a ps3 but do have a wii. i thought for what it came with it was a better value. it comes with a wireless remote, wireless router built in, a lot of built in memory for saved games (i have a few games and apps downloaded and some saved games and still have close to 200 blocks of memory left), it can play game cube discs, you can download a ton of old games from all the older nintendos, neo geo, saturn and a few other systems. the 1 i have can't play dvds, though, which didn't matter that much since i have a dvd player, i think now they make them even HD/Blu-Ray compatible.

however, you can't play some games on it that they have for play station and xbox, like gta, fable....but the wii version of resident evil 4 is really good, it combines the game cube and play station versions with a few unlockable mini games
