I was at a show at the Tin Angel in philly a couple months ago. Tiny, quiet room. Five feet from the stage, this woman alternates between singing along, loudly, and yawning, loudly. We kept looking at her, but couldn't say anything left we disrupt the performance, as we were at the table directly in front of the artist.

Couple years ago my friend and I asked some hipster dumbasses to move to the back of the club so they could talk and we could listen to Andrew Bird. Surprisingly, they complied. But there are definitely certain bands and venues that attract the I'm here to be seen crowd, and that can turn me off of going to shows. Honestly, I've had the problem more in NY than I ever did in Philly, and that's while avoiding Brooklyn entirely. On the other hand, there were some idiots talking and yelling during Arc at the Friday EV Tower show in June. I'll never understand any of it.

how was the Andrew Bird show? i'm thinking of seeing him when he comes to town

On Friday I went to see Animal Collective and I heard these two girls behind me saying "what's up with all this ambient noise?" over and over again. Holy Shit! Did they go to the show without even knowing who AC were!?!?!

Another bad one was actually last week too when I saw TVotR and these guys behind me kept talking about how drunk they were. My guess is that they just turned 21 and they were trying to be tough guys. I told them to keep it down, they got pissed, so I moved over lol.

AMAZING. You have not seen looping until you see this. Different from the albums, but equally great. Definitely go - though, yeah, I've never seen him with a non-dipshit audience.

I hate people that come to shows b/c it's cool then act like they are the coolest thing there. For the most part the people that REALLY wanna be there are gonna look cool and all the preppy taint smacks just look like jerks.

People throwin shit onstage is a pretty fuckin atrocious deed imo. Caught the Black Crowes a couple years ago and some gel haired popped collar fuckstick hit Chris Robinson's mic with a beer as he was singin. The crowd pushed the guy to the front and security held him up onstage while he got rained on CR gave a little lecture. "Notice how it's not one of the long hairs causin trouble" or somethin to that effect.
  • buddy decided to answer his phone AND chat during csny's guinevere. i told him to shut up. i'd do it again if i had to.

That is some fine wordsmithry.

Wilco show last month, lots of those stupid glowstick/bands going around. Idiots started tossing them onstage during the encore break, hitting the techs who are just trying to get the shit done so the band can get back on. And then the fuckwads throw them at the band. Tweedy was pretty funny about it, motioning and smiling, like "Bring it on, bitches!" But Nels was definitely not a happy camper. Eventually they stopped, Tweedy telling the crowd, "We win because we have all of them now." It was a great crowd otherwise (except for Fartman in front of me. That was something rank). I think it helped seeing them up in Dutchess rather than going to the Brooklyn show.

I kind of get the cameras at shows, people want to take a quick picture of the show they're at ... but here's what I don't get ...

I'm at the Kings of Leon show a few months back and to no one's surprise, their crowds are now made up of tons of college/just post-college cackling chicks.

So, they sit there stoically during most of the pre-Only By the Night songs (which is totally fine by me).

Then, either Sex on Fire or Use Somebody is played, and they ALL pull out their cameras and start snapping shots, looking at their phone, posing with their friends, deleting, posting it on Facebook etc. etc. etc.

My point, why not take the picture during a song you don’t like or don’t know, and enjoy the songs you do like without worrying about the hassle of the camera?

Overall, the use of camera phones at concerts has really got out of hand ... who the hell wants to watch the show through their camera, put the phone in your pocket and WATCH the show.

If your gel and stiff collar last through a PJ show you're not rockin hard enough
  • My wife is a big Ani Difranco fan, so I took her to a show down in Hartford, CT last winter. It was in a smallish bar type place, standing room crowd in front, bar and tables in the back. During any remotely slow or quiet song, the crowd in the back was as loud as the music. It was this way the entire fucking show.

Why pay for a ticket? Why come?

not saying it's right, but I think they come to get drunk or just somewhere to go.

+1 I fucking hate 98% of the people I've ever met. Those movies where some terrible event occurs and there's only a small group of survivors are like porn to me.

Try going to a show in L.A.! Much of the crowd are there for the business and/or hipness factor, and there is always a high level of chatter. I derive a lot of joy when I see one of these people get told that they are not on the guest list....based on the looks on their faces, you'd think they'd just received some horrible news!

I used to organize charity concerts, and you'd be surprised at how many people who are usually on the guest list actually complained that they had to PAY to get in. I usually handed them a pamphlet dealing with child cancer victims..that usually shut them up!

I stopped going to gigs with "industry" people because they would have to deal with too many diversions (getting backstage, saying hello to people, etc.), as opposed to enjoying the music!
