Someone PLEASE Talk Me Down!

So I'm only 17 from Mass. and got tickets to go see 10/31 Philly. I' going with my brother-in-law and sister, both avid PJ fans.

I'm so wanting to take school off that week and heading to Philly for all 4 show.

Since my brother-in-law and sister could not A) take that time off from work or B) spend that type of money on shows/travel.....I'm pretty much SOL.

But, I've been playing through these crazy scenarios of 10C'ers taking me over to see all 4 shows and my mom letting me and all this other BS.

It makes me SO angry knowing none of this is possible, yet it's so easily attainable by saying to fellow 10C'ers that I need spare tickets for the show, which could totally happen.

Someone just tell me I'm being irrational or something, because the urge of wanting to go to all 4 shows is getting out of control.

Help Me :?

  • You only live once (well that we know of)...
  • It's not crazy.

    Irresponsible:depends on who you ask.

    Off the beaten path: sure.

    Crazy: nope.

Probably not the best idea ever, but Lord knows if I wasn't tied down with financial contraints, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

As it stands, I'm only making it to Chicago this year, and am still trying to find a fan with an extra ticket for night two!

it is a little ridiculous...but i can totally see where you are coming from.

i'm 19 and i'm going into my second year of college...and would KILL to take a trip to Philly and see all 4 shows.

However, it's extremely irrational for me to miss the classes and spend all the money when I am nothing but a poor college student.

Maybe we could just live vicariously through the ones that can, and just buy the boots later on? That's what I'm planning on doing.

do you go to night school? why would you have to take school off?

if you went to school, did your homework right when you got home, then took off for the shows, got to bed at 1 or 2 and got up again at 6 for another morning....you could regaurd what you're doing as "prepping for college"

10C people are cool in general, but if I were underage (too young to get my own hotel etc.) I wouldn't feel safe being dependent on people I had never met. I wouldn't want my younger brother or sister to do what you're thinking about. If you're a girl, that goes double - I'm not being sexist it's just that there's a wider population of baddies who might target a girl.

When I was in college, I would go see Dave Matthews Band a lot, and I felt safe going with a friend to a large party in a hotel room held by specific people I already knew from online (from personal communication, not just seeing them on the mailing list). I went with a friend, we drove ourselves, and there was no staying overnight. Then later that summer when I had hung out with people a couple times, I felt ok about buying into a block of hotel rooms with this core group of people.

Also, if you are dependent on your parents financially (paying for college etc.) and they don't want you to go, this could be a bad move. Plus if you're under 18 and "run away" I do believe they can send the cops after you, not fun.

If your mom is in favor, I would suggest trying to find someone you have personally talked to from the pit who's doing all 4 days, and who's organizing some get-togethers. Maybe a female from the Wishlist Foundation, something like that. See if you can get in on their block of rooms, do NOT go to Philly without guaranteed lodging since it will be too far to drive home that night. Ask that person to keep an eye on you over the 4 days.

Even at the show, it sucks to be alone if you're young and maybe less experienced in handling bad situations. You could end up near some older assholes who give you a hard time, and it would help to have a friend, even another young person. But there will be lots of people around, so you should be ok in the venue.

Personally, if I were you I'd rather save the hotel money and be planning for going to all the Mass shows they'll probably play in 2010 when we're expecting a bigger tour. Or maybe they won't do a bigger tour, who knows I guess. But when I make a decision to save lots of money, like when I skipped the EV tour this summer, I usually feel good about that afterward.

    Good luck!

Dude I love your commitment...but you are way too young to be thinking about ditching school all those days for Pearl Jam. Maybe if you were 20 ;-)

you would be in the shit house for weeks with the P's- but if you have to be in the shit house you may as well be listening to Pearl Jam!
  • I traveled to Philadelphia when I was a junior in high school to see my first show (Wachovia center). My parents were really pissed-- they really didn't think it was a good idea. Anyway, five years and 12 shows later, they've just accepted this part of my life lol. Doing all 4 shows is quite a commitment, and isn't financially practical, especially if you need to buy each of the tickets in the secondary market...

but I would suggest getting to at least one, and the Halloween show is on a Saturday... if you could pull that off, i promise you, your parents will understand, and you will never forget it.

    good luck

if you're a good student, headed to college, stay out of trouble usually, I would say just miss Friday and go see 10/30 (in addition to 10/31). one missed day is reasonable. a week is a bit much. I have missed college, law school and work to go see PJ, but you have to make sure it's within reason and wont set you back in the long run. shows are fun, but get your ducks in a row and you'll be able to have a lot more fun later.

    good luck.

No you're not. You're trying to get us to talk you IN to going.
if you want to be talked out of this.....go here:

hehehe! exactly what I was thinking. At the end of the day you are talking about something being so important to you that you want to breach some normal standards of behaviour. Ultimately this is not unhealthy. The more independent you become the more and more opportunities you are going to have to do this. The thing to keep in mind is 'perspective' since once you've breached this once, it will get easier and easier to do, so if you breach on a whim for the sake of it age 17, you are likely to struggle with keeping your desires in check age 21. Personally I would go to Seattle!

Hey, my Dad skipped school to watch Bill Halley and the Comets and he is practically the model of the 'international responsible global citizen' side of 'the man' these days.

In the end your education needs to have passion as well as stability. Personally I think you should go out and do some work, and earn yourself a little of your own money to oil the older adult support. Walk into your local newspaper office and tell them you are going to philly for the week to write them a review of the 4 philly shows; get their blessing and a letter of support. Knock on the door of your college principal and tell him what you are doing for the school to advance your high school writing and journalism experience; get their blessing and start to get a bit of a local media buzz going.

In this way you are turning your rebellious dysfunctional impulses into some seriously helpful employable entrepreneurial spirit which is marking you out 'success' not 'dropout'.

Hey, if you want me to write a letter of support to your College Principal (outlining the educational merit in this and the avenues for publication in print or online) for this venture just let me know. Maybe the forum and / or the tenclub / wishlist foundation could 'commission' and feature your writeup prominently!

I'm deadly serious about taking this kind of approach. You sound like a thoughtful budding writer. Writers live, and they write. Make it happen, these adults had their own dreams once, just speak to their heads and their hearts at the same time :)

    love

Im going to see all 4 Philly Pearl Jam shows. Its not totally unrealistic. I might miss some homework but my college is close enough to Philly that I can make it back to my dorm everynight (and to classes in the morning :( ) .

  • Kiddo, I know the thought of 4 Philly shows is tempting, but look at it this way. You would be spending outrageous amounts of cash, and missing a week of school during a crucial time - the most important fall midterms of your pre-college life. Not smart. Colleges do rescind offers to people who blow off senior year. And what are you going to do on the 29th when there is no show - hang around Philadelphia with nothing to do and little cash? No. Even on days when there is a show, there is not enough for a teenager to do on his own in the city for four whole days. It would be a drag. Go re-read "The Catcher in the Rye." It's true. It's not like you would be spending four days 24/7 with a caravan of fellow fans. Yes, people might meet at pre-parties and hang out, but that's it until the show.

You already have a ticket to the most coveted show of the tour. There will be many other PJ shows and you will be there for them. If you can get a ticket for Friday and leave after school that day, with parental knowledge, and if you have a reliable place to stay while in town, with parental approval of your whereabouts, and if it doesn't cause major financial distress, then adding Friday would be reasonable. But more reasonable would be to go to Saturday only, this time around, and it would probably keep you in better shape for the next series of shows.

If you don't have the money and can't catch up... don't.
