BONO

  • I'm really taken aback by some of the sentiments towards Bono here. Strange how people can see such polar opposite things in a person, based on what they "know" of them. We really don't know them, so how can anyone definitively state that he's this or that? I know that I have had my experiences with he, and Ed, and I'm hugely impressed with how nice both of them are.

It seems Bono is very candid about himself. I think his activism comes from deep in his heart (and there's got to be a lot of charitable works he's done that doesn't get reported on). As for the shows, no, an artist doesn't need any kind of "gimmick", but there's nothing at all wrong with choosing to visually enhance a show, be it on a small scale, or large. It can add to the experience.

I went to ten U2 shows last tour, up front for most. (So much for charging too much for a show, as a ticket didn't cost much more than some band merchandise). It was definitely an experience. I personally feel a deep connection to their music. Pretty much all of it. Either it hits you, or it doesn't, I guess.

And all artists possess overdeveloped egos.
