the band already has a drummer... and since when did people become bothered about a drummer

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
in my mind, easily, matt cameron is the quintessential pj drummer and definitely the best. however, that is just my opinion. abruzzesse and irons still definitely did some interesting and great shit in their time with the band.

He might have been a good drummer but all drummers are good. PJ is great. I think Dave was a knob.
Cameron is a very very dry drummer, barely playing cymbals on the same material, changing the drum parts of the original songs to fit is abilities, but he rocks on the songs he's written.
Exactly! And that's what irritates me the most.....

Matt is a great drummer in his own right. I don't at all like they way he plays most of the early catalog, but I wish they would permanently bury most pre-Cameron music when they play live.

Actually Chamberlain, Abbruzzese and Cameron are AMAZING drummers! Abbruzzese and Cameron are just on 100% different playing styles. Abbruzzese was a very technical drummer, played very tight rudiments, and was "wet" playing on the cymbals (sometimes too much on the splashes). Cameron is a very very dry drummer, barely playing cymbals on the same material, changing the drum parts of the original songs to fit is abilities, but he rocks on the songs he's written. While I'm a gigantic Abbruzzese fan, I think Chamberlain was probably the best all 'round drummer for PJ.
How the hell can you say that Chamberlain was the best drummer for them? He played with them for what a month? He recorded 0 albums with them and was a momentary replacement, never officially a member of the band. What exactly did you like about his playing with pearl jam? And, would you point me to a concert bootleg that displays his excellence as the "best all 'round drummer for PJ".
From some of the recordings I've heard (and being a drummer of about 25 years), he had a great fluidity to his fills. Not over the top as Dave sometimes was. Not as bland as Cameron often is. Also, you have to listen to a number of his recordings with Edie Brickell and Tori Amos to gauge his talent, not just his time with PJ. Matt Chamberlain was asked to be in Pearl Jam full time, and Matt turned them down. So... because of his answer, we shouldn't consider his talent?
"I toured in the van with them [Pearl Jam], played a bunch of clubs—I had a good time, definitely had a good time. They wanted me to join the band, but [Edie Brickell & New Bohemians] had just broke up, I had just got off the road after touring for four years straight—I could not imagine doing it again."
What show specifically makes you say "Boy, I wish Matt Chamberlain stayed with the band". I want to hear what you hear. I don't care about his other acts, I know who he is and how accomplished he is. Your comment was that he was the best all around drummer FOR Pearl Jam. It seems like a stretch to say a drummer who toured with pearl jam for a month was the best drummer FOR pearl jam.
The problem was that Dave wanted to be a rock star. He wanted to make the videos, and have the hit singles, and go on MTV Cribs (assuming that show existed in 1992), etc etc. The rest of the band, especially Ed, did not want that sort of stuff at that time.
Dave's goals were different than the rest of the band's. There was nothing wrong, in particular, with his goals, but when you have four people pulling one way and one pulling the other, something is going to give.
Please show me why Dave wanted to be a "rock star"?
The band was already making videos BEFORE Dave was in the f*cking band... so blaming him for videos is OUT. You can ONLY blame Ed, Stone, Jeff and Mike for starting PJ on a path of making videos (unless maybe Dave was pulling the strings before he was even in the band ...that evil genius!!).
...and Dave would have liked to be on MTV Cribs, if that show existed then?? Seriously? Where are you getting this from?
I've got to say, with ALL due respect, your @$$ must be really deep, because you are reaching far to pull out some of what you're writing.
Are you Dave? Or are you just retarded?
Dave wanted to continue making videos. Dave was put off when ed and other members of the band did not want to put songs that sounded like pop hits onto albums. Members of the band did not like his drumming on a multiple songs on Vs. and Vitalogy. They were heading places musically that they didn't think Dave was willing to go and the band made the decision to fire his ass. I'M GLAD THEY FIRED HIM!!! Not because I hate Dave (although his constant bashing was tiresome), but because we never would have got the albums we got with him in the band.
yeah thank god they fired him! if he were still around they would have kept making videos, kept touring with icketmaster, inked a deal with Target, do shows on MTV and VH1, and make cheesy pop songs! they' would be total sellouts!
oh wait, they've doen all that. you are delusional. i know its easier to just call him a rock star.

Listen to all these versions of Alive all the way thru, in this order. I know you will enjoy Cameron's version anyway, but here you go anyway.
Matt Chamberlain - Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCgFYz7VX74
Very fluid fills. Good use of splashes and crash cymbals. Tuning of the drums was a good middle tuning, not too low, not too high. A excellent drummer. The drums were synergistic with the whole sound.
Dave Abbruzzese - Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbhsYC4gKy4
Good fills. Good use of cymbals. Tuning of drums was good (sometimes the snare seemed maybe 10% a little too high pitch). Another excellent drummer. Drums stood out a little bit more than Chamberlain.
Jack Irons - Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zA3HLSHjE8
Sloppy fills and basic other fills. Cymbal use much more basic. I call Jack more of a "bohemian" drummer because his style was so loose and live often translated into sloppy, especially compared to his predecessors.
Matt Cameron - Alive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5UEkumxNCs
(video and audio slightly misaligned)
Better fills than Jack, but not as good as Chamberlain and Abbruzzese. Some of the tom fills seem forced into the song, just like some of Abbruzzese's splashes seemed forced in other songs. Cymbal use better than Jack but not as good as the other two drummers on this song.
...now, Alive is a song that has very little differences that are noticeable, but because it's the only one Chamberlain is on in clear audio and video, I chose it.
I do have favorite drummers on certain songs, for certain playing abilities/styles. I prefer Cameron on Release - He fits the simple and gentle nature of the song. I prefer Abbruzzese on State Of Love & Trust - His timing and cymbal strikes fit the song well. I prefer Chamberlain on songs like Alive - as stated above.
I can't compare Chamberlain on songs from VS, Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, and Avocado because he didn't play on any of that material, but I would have like to have seen his take on it. I think that Chamberlain may have been a more agreeable member of the band, so they wouldn't have had as much turmoil as a band, or as wild swings in drumming talent from them changing drummers another 3 times after he left. Also his versatility would have suited them well for a lot of their material (except for a number of songs like Who You Are, which are clearly oriented around an individual drummer's sound). Chamberlain has a lot of strengths that would have surfaced had he had influence on an album. A close second to my interested in Chamberlain is Abbruzzese, but then we certainly wouldn't have gotten No Code... but maybe we would have gotten another Vs, which I would also have enjoyed. Vs is by far my favorite album.

My statement was mainly in regards to the album No Code and the album Yield. If Dave continued in the band we would not have had those records. The bottom line is the members of the band decided that it was best to continue with a new drummer. True this appears to be mostly ed and jeff's decision, but stone and mike obviously agreed more with them than with other options.
I don't drink cool aid or lick asses, but I do have a certain level of trust in a band that I have followed closely for 15+ years. I choose to trust the band's decision to fire Dave because apparently they couldn't continue with him. I think it allowed them to progress in ways as a band the are invaluable to who they are now.
As to your little quip at the end -
Ticketmaster: I respect that the band took them on in the mid-90's. No one joined them, and if they were going to continue to reach their fan base they had to play ball. They tried and failed.
Target: I would much rather they record, produce, and own all their songs then distribute thru Target, then have a larger corporation like Sony own their music.
MTV/VH1- The couple of things they've done over recent years have been fairly fan friendly events. Besides the storytellers thing, they really haven't used these outlets to the extent of other major bands.
Cheesy-pop songs: I have no idea what you are talking about.
I really can't believe all the sh*t I am seeing about Matt Cameron. He is an amazing drummer, and a very talented songwriter. He is easily one of the best (famous) drummers on the planet.
I saw nothing special about Dave A, but I'm not going to bash him and say "I'm glad they fired him!". Do you people know him personally? How can anyone even begin to predict what the band may or may not have done had he still been in the band? Yield never would have been recorded with him? WHAT??
Jeff has even said around the time of Dave A's firing, it was "Ed's band". So don't think for a minute that Ed may have just pulled a dictatorish move to get Dave out. Do I know this happened? Absolutely not, just pure conjecture on my part.
I do agree that I thought it was quite classless to leave him out of every piece of the Ten Legacy edition. It's like they wanted to erase his existence in the band. The band was not a four piece, and they shouldn't have projected it as such.
I remember when the band was asked if they re-recorded any of the songs for Lost Dogs, and Ed just coyly said something like (not a direct quote) "yes, we did, I'm sure you can figure out which ones". To me, it was pretty obvious it was all the ones that Dave A originally played on, so he wouldn't get any money. It seems that they really just want to stick(man) it to him.

they screwed him over with the re-releases, and its even shittier that some PJans attack him on a personal level knowing absolutely nothing about him, and for the exact same things they give the rest of the band a pass on.

I think he's referring to the way Pearl Jam was apparently a 4 piece band for Unplugged, or so it would seem since they had four out of the five member's faces on the sleeve of the Unplugged dvd. They basically erased any existence he had with the band for the re-release, with the exception of a very tiny token picture on the DITP.
I'm 100% positive he must be getting royalties on things he was a part of... I believe as long as his name is credited on music, then royalties are due.

Actually, someone on here joked that PJ was being so childish about how they don't speak of Dave, and had Matt sign the box set, and removed his image from the box set that they would go so far as to digitally insert Matt's head on Dave's body. ...and to be honest, it would not surprise me in the slightest at this point.

Dave was a tool alright... a tool of awesomeness!

Sammi: Wanna just break up?
Actually, someone on here joked that PJ was being so childish about how they don't speak of Dave, and had Matt sign the box set, and removed his image from the box set that they would go so far as to digitally insert Matt's head on Dave's body. ...and to be honest, it would not surprise me in the slightest at this point.

Very valid points my friend!
