i've finally realized why Riot Act just doesn't work for me, and it isnt the songs. Most of the songs, especially live, are great. Its just that on the days they recorded the album, they were performed really badly. i think they needed more rehearsal time. Especially Ed. his delivery is just bad. he sounds tired, depressed and like he just doesnt give a shit anymore. I wish they would just re-record this album but i doubt that will ever happen.
I made a live Riot Act CD and i really love it.
I agree with you 100%. Eddie's vocals just fall really flat on it. It's hard to get excited about an album the band itself wasn't excited about.
I don't really agree with this at all.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
i love this album! i have 2 admit it wasnt my favourite when i first heard it but it is now and has been for a couple of years now, and i think eds vocals r fine on it, more than fine! i mean i love the emotion u can feel in hes voice on i am mine. how aweosme n catchy is green disease and one song i really hope i hear on this tour is you are, what a song!

What tracklist do you have for the live Riot Act CD? I'm nowhere near a hardcore bootleg collector/listener, so I have no clue what's good and what's not.
Agree. It sounds bored, tired, listless, flat, etc.
maybe we should start a poll on which album pj fans prefer...riot act or self-titled. i have a feeling self-titled would win out, but i can hardly fathom that. i just don't get it. riot act is so amazing, i have never been able to understand why people hate it. i think it's one of the most underrated albums of the decade. certainly the most underrated pj album. truely one of the most impressive works of art in their catalogue. i feel like it's their no code for this decade. everyone loves no code, why not riot act?
I cannot honestly say it's my favorite, but I definitely think it is a very good album. I never understood all the negative comments about it, but that's just me.

Quite simply because the songs just aren't as good. They sound lifeless on this one, almost as if they know they could do better.
Hate on their self-titled all you want, but you can tell the band was excited about the material and the performances seem much more passionate overall.
For my first post as a Ten Club member, I am going to have to admit to Riot Act being my favorite PJ album. I enjoy it because the emotion really stands out on it.
not my favorite record (that belongs to Yield) but it does have my favorite song, and not to be morbid, but my funeral song as well...."Thumbing My Way".....so yea, 70 years from now, when im 102 years old, if anyone wants to play it acoustic, and sing it badly, but with passion (re: Old School).....hit me up!!!......
this is my favorite song as well... was hoping to hear Ed play it on the solo tour since I don't think I'll ever hear it played live by PJ.

I just don't get that feeling at all when listening to these two albums.
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane
It has be at the bottom for me...I find it uninspired at most times. Some of the songs are pretty good (Save You, I Am Mine, Green Disease, All Or None, Arc) but the performance sounds tired, and Vedder is just not there.
I'm not a big fan of Avocado either (bad production), but it least showed abit more life and had a couple of killer songs (Worldwide Suicide, Severed Hand)
There are songs on there, unfortunately, that I could happily live my life without ever hearing again (Cropduster, Arc, Ghost, Get Right, helphelp).
Still, consider the quality of some of the other songs on there (LBC, I Am Mine, You Are, Green Disease, Thumbing My Way, Can't Keep, Save You, All Or None, Bu$hleaguer) - how many other bands have that many incredible songs on their "worst" record?!
Binaural is probably my least favourite. Nothing wrong with the songs - it's just the production that ruins it for me. I really have to be in the right mood, and make a helluva lot of effort, to be able to enjoy Binaural from start to finish.

you say this as if it's a fact. maybe you don't appreciate the production or the way the vocals were recorded on riot act, but to insinuate that the band wasn't excited or passionate about the material on the album is pretty unfair. maybe you just get that feeling when comparing the two albums because the self-titled is extremely loud and way more polished than riot act, but when comparing the songs on the two albums live, i don't hear any more passion in the peformances for self-titled, maybe even less if anything.
to me, the songs on riot act come off as a lot more personal. self-titled seems more politcal.
and by the way, i never hated on the self-titled, i was just expressing how much better i thought riot act was than avocado, which seems to take a lot less heat. i thought avocado was good, but the rest of pj's albums have been great.
Riot Act is my favorite. By a slim margin. I think the instruments sound great. What puts it over the top is the first track (Can't Keep) is slow and building, like its getting you ready for something. Then Save You rocks you in the face! Similiar to how PJ usually opens its live shows. But save some energy for the end of the record too - track #10 is Green Disease and #13 is 1/2 Full!!!
"Live" Riot Act is an awesome idea. Making a "Live" version of every album - sounds like a fun project!
It's my least favorite. Ed let Matt write too many songs (sorry I love matt but his songwriting abilities are poor) and too many songs are weak. I feel like the whole album is like a long trip or something, especially with the craziness of Help Help and You Are. @_@

Same here, it's really classic PJ in my book. Unfortunately, I didn't fully realize how great it was until I heard the songs live. The sound on the studio version just doesn't resonate with me like the live versions do. Take "You Are" for example, when I heard it live it freakin blew me away.
Songs like Green Disease, LBC, I am Mine to me - are representive of what this band stands for. The words, the music are some of PJ's best in my book. And the WPBch show for that CD was one of THE best I've been to. Great memories!

I used to think of it as one of the lesser albums until one day I listened to it all the way through, and while going track by track I realised there isn't one weak track. Green Disease might be considered filler but I like it. The lyrics are some of their best, especially cropduster. Overall it's just got a good sound, good themes and is definatly underrated. Definatly one of my favourite albums.
sorry I love matt but his songwriting abilities are poor
Oh, please. Get real. When's the last time you wrote a song? If you even tried, you couldn't come anywhere near Matt's expertise and skill. Most people can't. So come into the real world, honey.
fucking Get Right. the whole album kicks ass IMO. Every album is different from the last and that's one of the reasons why PJ will never grow old to me and not to mention their shows..

agreed.
but that's not saying much.
Agreed. That said, I'd have a real tough time deciding between Vs. and Riot Act for my number two spot.

Lyrically and production yes.
I just love the feel to it. It's very atmospheric and chilling. Although, I'll never get into Help, Help.. one of two Pearl Jam songs I always skip.
Can't Keep, Save You, LBC, You Are, and Green Disease definitely top my favorites.
Love or hate, Riot Act definitely stands out from the other albums and I love that.
I never could get into the song until i heard this version from adelaide in 03. A lot more urgency. and its gets rockin at the end.
awesome version!! could anyone hook me up with this mp3? thanks in advance!
