can any locals suggest some cool things to do and good affordable restaurants (any local favorites) to check out while in toronto, staying downtown at the Chelsea. Also what is the best way to get around, cab or is there a metro ? any info would be greatly appreciated.

Your staying where i'm staying! :D

Next door man is The Elephant & Castle. That's were we did the Eddie Vedder Solo PreParties last August. The Jameson Chicken is to die for. I love that dish. There's a subway close by. When @ hotel, check the front desk for their tour guide map. Also ask for our friend Jonathan! Mr. Merkinball. He helped me & many, many Pearl Jam fan's @ the hotel. :)

Ya coming to the preparty right? Starts @ 3pm @ the Brazen Head Irish Pub!

we do have a subway system. if its a beautiful day I'd walk. I have no idea where your hotel is so I wouldn't know how far a walk it would be to the show. If its your first time in toronto check out Yonge Square at yonge and dundas. There are lots of places to eat around there

Toronto has a subway. Not a great one, but it does the trick if you are just sticking to the downtown area. One of the lines runs along Yonge Street (the main street in Toronto).

Yonge and Bloor - Yorkville area. High class part of town. More expensive restaurants and shopping, but a very nice area, at least to walk through.

Yonge - between Dundas and Queen - The Eaton Centre. Hugh shopping mall. The whole area from Dundas all the way down to King is filled with restaurants (everything from McDonalds and up), coffee shops, shopping.

Yonge and Shuter (between Dundas and Queen) - The historic Massey Hall

You can get on the subway anywhere on the Yonge line and take it to Union Station and then walk a little bit east along Front street - that gets you to the Rogers Centre (Blue Jays are in town) and the CN Tower. Also, if you are a beer drinker - right across from the Rogers Centre is the Steam Whistle Brewery, which has tours and a bar :)

The main downtown subway line is shaped like a "U" - one side goes up Yonge, the other up University. There are stops on the University side for the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum - stop is called "Museum") and the AGO (art Gallery of Ontario) which I believe is at the St. Andrew's stop.

King Street - between Spadina and Yonge is the "entertainment District" which has all of the theaters (musicals, etc.) and also a lot of nice restaurants. Somewhat pricey to eat there, but definitely worth walking down King Street to see it.

Using the Go Train, can I get to Exhibition station from Union?
  • Don't know much about framing shops in Downtown, but there's a Staples on University just south of Dundas that is fairly big.

Yes you can. But not every train that will run west along the Lakeshore line will stop at Exhibition.

You can check the Go schedule here:

Yep - that's the quickest way to get there from Union. It's just 1 stop west, and takes only 5 minutes. The west trains stop at Exhibition once per hour at the :43's (ie 6:43, 7:43, 8:43). You will be able to catch a train back at the top of the hour at either 11pm or midnight (midnight is the last train back east fyi). I hope that helps.

BeerBaron - nice summary of stuff to do in Toronto. I'd also add - If you got a buzz on anytime before 4am and you're downtown go for a burrito http://www.burritoboyz.ca

Different place. That's on Peter. Burrito Boyz is a different place, on Adelaide.

I've got one thing to add to Mayor Beer Baron's list that's not too far from you. If you head west on College (one block north of your hotel) to Spadina you will get to Kensington Market which is Toronto's Chinatown. It's kind of a 'hippy' area with (aside from Asian markets) some cool bars, restaurants, vintage clothing stores and a record shop or two.

Yes you can, but if you're coming from Union you can also take the streetcar right into the CNE (The 509 I believe). It runs more frequently and might be a tad cheaper.

Good to know, I'll take that into consideration when I'm down there.
  • Can one of kind locals answer a question for me? I'm staying st the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel on Queen ST and I'm planning on walking to and from the show. Will that be a safe walk? Thank you.

The dangers of downtown Toronto are really exaggerated. I've never had any problems walking around that area even at 2 or 3 am. There will be so many people around, especially since the show should be over by 11 and the Ex in going on that night as well. Going between your hotel and the venue won't be a problem at all. You will be sticking to main streets.

As others have suggested, you could always take the streetcars. They run down Queen Street and can get you to the venue in under 10 minutes.
  • To the OP, I always like to go down Bloor Street - especially west of Avenue Road - when I'm downtown. There are tons of interesting stores, small pubs and restaurants, and some theatres there. You can take the subway from your hotel (Dundas Stn) to Bloor Street by taking the Yonge line and getting off either at Bloor Stn (Yonge St) or St. George Stn (on Bloor just west of Avenue Rd). I usually just walked there along Yonge St - it takes about 45 min to get to most of the interesting places on Bloor.

Any suggestions on travel from the airport to the Delta Chelsa???
    Taxi,shuttle,train?

    Taxi,shuttle,train?

A taxi from Pearson (which is in the northwest end of the city) will run you about $60 to get downtown. Since the show is on a Friday, there will be a lot of traffic coming in to town from about 3pm onwards.

There are a bunch of shuttles busses that go around to the different downtown hotels. A one-way ticket is just under $20. This trip can be quite long, especially if the bus is packed. Last time I checked, the Delta Chelsea didn't have a free shuttle service, but you may be able to catch a ride on one of the other hotel's shuttles.

When I flew in and stayed Downtown, I preferred to take the TTC - Public Transit. From the airport, there is a direct bus - route 192 - that goes to Kipling subway station. It takes less than 15 minutes to get there since it doesn't make many stops along the way. From there, you can take the Bloor line east and transfer to the Yonge line at the Yonge station. The Delta Chelsea is near Dundas Station. In all, the trip takes about 40-45 minutes and only costs $2.75.

And when you try it, try the haddock burrito. It sounds disgusting; it's actually phenomenal. And there's a really good poutine place right on top of it.

Oh, and if you're feeling slightly adventurous, try taking the TTC downtown--take the Airport Rocket (or Express...I can never remember) bus from the airport to Kipling station, then take the subway from Kipling to Yonge on the Bloor Line, transfer to the Yonge Line and head to College. It's a bit time-consumming, relatively speaking, but it's only $2.75.
