Very nice list. I like how the OP included his reasoning. My top five could change easily.

1-No Code. The highs are higher than any other album. Not sure if it is possible to beat an album with Sometimes, Who You Are, In My Tree, Smile, Red Mosquito, and Present Tense. If I were at a show and they played one entire album, this would be my choice - particularly to hear Mankind. On a personal level, it was released the first couple weeks I went to college and my first semester was dominated by this and The Bends.

2-Vs. It is a perfect second album. Favorite song on it is Leash. Could do without WMA, but the rest of amazing. I remember the day it came out and the anticipation of the car ride to the record store. I had a tshirt with the album cover on it that I wore to the point of it falling apart.

3-Ten. Until the last year or so I would always say this was my favorite. They became my favorite band when that was all they had (I didn't listen to much else back then) and for a long time it seemed sacrilege to say anything else. It certainly holds up well, and maybe it is just because I have heard all of the songs six million times but I am now comfortable saying I like something else a little more. Favorites are Release and Oceans, the latter I have still never heard live. Nothing but great songs from start to finish.

4-Vitalogy. Corduroy still remains my favorite song from any band and it is one of the few that I think are better on the album than live. Last Exit might be my favorite opener. Also have always loved Not For You and Immortality. Very few wink links.

5-Yield. All Those Yesterdays is my favorite off the album, but almost everything on it is great. Given to Fly is one of my favorites (I realize I'm typing that a lot) both on the album and live. The only downside for me is that my two least favorite songs on the album are back to back - Wishlist and Pilate - but other than that, this album is consistently great. I have it at #5 today, but could easily be in the top few on a different day depending on my mood.

6-Avocado. Big drop off from #5 to #6. None of the songs on this would be in my top 25 PJ songs and a few - Comatose, Gone, and Come Back - might crack the bottom 10 or 15. Highlights are Severed Hand, Marker in the Sand, Parachutes, and Inside Job. The rest of the songs are fine, but nothing that I think is outstanding.

7-Binaural. Another album with a lot of good songs, but nothing that if put on one of their first five albums, would super impress. Really like Of the Girl, particularly live.

8-Riot Act. Every band has to have a worst album. That doesn't mean it is terrible, just that compared to the others, it doesn't fare as well. I Am Mine and Green Disease stand out, and I won't skip most of the songs on the album if they come up on my iPod, but I can't put this one above anything.
    98-KC; 00-Indianapolis, StL, KC; 03-KC, DC; 04-DC; 06-Camden2, DC, Pittsburgh; 08-DC; 09-Chicago1, Spectrum3; 10-DC; 13-Baltimore; 16-Chicago1; 18-Seattle2; 22-NY; 23-St Paul1&2, Chicago1; 24-Chicago2, NY1, Baltimore
  • i couldn't even begin to rank them, mostly because there are highlights on every single cd that stand alone as my choice cuts.

i'm always a big fan of the new stuff, but that's mostly because of the excitement of the new stuff.

so ummm the new music is always the best, and yes there are some old songs that i don't prefer, but um those are few and far between, which is why i am a fan(hullo!)

so my list goes like this

    self titled
    ...
    .
    ,.; etc
    ten
