I bet 1mil fake dollars that PJ will play at the Superbowl

With a "poppier" new album, a mainstream campaign for record sales (Target), a re-issuing of previous albums, and a tour planned for 2010, now seems like the perfect time for "The Pepsi Halftime Show starring Pearl Jam". It seems like they are really trying to reach a bigger audience and I can't think of a better way to do that. I also can't seem to think of any other big name artists out there who have not done that halftime show.

Don't say its impossible, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and U2 have all done it and PJ or Eddie have played shows with all of them.

I'm not sure what I think of the idea, but I could see it happening.

Setlist:
Corduroy
The Fixer
Alive
1998: Minneapolis
2000: Alpine Valley (Ice Bowl)
2003: St. Paul
2006: St. Paul I, St. Paul II
2008: Va. Beach, Milwaukee
2009: Chicago I

just because The Fixer has been described as "poppy" (such a general term, by the way) doesn't mean that the rest of the album will be "poppy".

also--i just don't see them playing the Super Bowl anytime soon. if it happens, i'll stand corrected.

    They aren't big enough. Sorry.

90% of people only remember Jeremy and stereotype them with grunge from the early nineties. Even if Nirvana were still around they would be out of place at the Superbowl.. most people don't even know the band is still together. We live in a cult world. Stop dreaming.

Seriously, ask a random 10 people on the street age 10 to 80 if they like Pearl Jam.. 5 won't even know who they are, 4 will remember Jeremy or Last Kiss and one might be able to name a couple songs.

That is the last 5 half-time shows. Pearl Jam can't even come close to touching the popularity of any of them. Those bands also cross multiple generations in regards to fans. Pearl Jam has zero chance of ever being the act for a Super Bowl halftime show. You vastly overestimate their popularity.
  • looking at all the bullshit that is now mainstream popular music..I'm dam happy to be part of this "cult"!!

and fuck the Superbowl halftime show...that's piss/eat/grab more beer time!

they are definately more popular than Petty or Prince, and since the halftime show is where old bands go to die lately, i can see it happening. in about 5 to 10 years.

but the trend of old rockers playing it will probably be dead by then.

I remember Alan Cross saying something to the effect of: "Each Pearl Jam album has sold less records than the album previous, with the exception of one." I believe he is referencing Vs. and Ten. With that consistent trend, do we really expect Superbowl #s?

I wouldn't mind either way, but I don't see it happening. Aerosmith, U2, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC are four bands with the same criteria as the actual bands that have played, and seem more likely. Established, conservative and on tour are the criteria I am referring to. And before someone mentions it, I know that PJ fit the criteria, but again, they just don't seem Superbowl bound in my opinion.

The U2 halftime show certainly did NOT suck.

Beautiful Day & Where the Streets Have No Name. Paid tribute to the 9/11 victims. Quick and awesome. They killed it.

    Oh, and ....

    Patriots 20
    Rams 17

indeed, it was a Beautiful Day!

No way they are more popular than Petty. Maybe Price but not Petty. Not even close.
  • I would love them to play the half time show this year. Bruce killed it last year!

sorry, have to agree that the offer is likely not coming from the NFL (or whoever is responsible for that montrosity) - Bret Michaels, Aerosmith and Bon Jovi stand a better chance. Sad but true.

I think Kayane West will get the Superbowl half time spot. Now that the world has stated he's now .. 'The Living Legend King of Pop' superstar! :|

They aren't as popular as Prince. Prince has sold over 80 million records. More people know who Prince is than Pearl Jam.. and they aren't even close to Tom Petty. Thats just an ignorant statement.

I love Pearl Jam and all but they are not nearly as popluar as either. The fan base may be more rabid but anyone who thinks they have a shot at playing the SuperBowl is crazy. Not going to happen.

Pearl Jam don't appeal to the masses enough for something like the Superbowl. Legendary rockers like The Stones, McCartney, Petty, and Springsteen work. Contemporary pop stars like Justin Timberliake work because it's a huge television audience. But I think Pearl Jam falls too much in the middle

Well said. I think this about sums it up.
  • I'm not saying that it will ever happen although if they had a couple really big new radio hits people would remember them more than you think. Also remember that who plays the superbowl is influenced by multiple stars aligning and much $$$. Many years the choices are limited and most importantly remember the NFL now chooses older rock acts that won't expose nipple.

My un-scientific guess is this... over half the population think that Pearl Jam retired after 1994... when their lead singer shot himself in his home in Seattle.
Of that group... about 8% believe that they attempted a comeback of sorts in 2006 by re-uniting for an album and tour... which didn't rekindle the same fire they had when they came out with 'Nevermind the Teen Spirit' in the early 90s.
Most of the fans of Football would much rather see someone who is currently in the spotlight... like the Foo Fighters... or some band with big radio hits.
99.999% of Super Bowl Halftime show fans are ladies. They want some of that R&B, Chris Brown vs. Rhianna crap... or that horrid Pop Country of Rascal Flats to watch as the men are out in the driveway, shooting some hoops, in the kitchen... scooping up the guacamole with their fingers or tossing a football in the street... "Go deep...".
    ...
If it were up to me... go old school. Bring out a marching band and have them do that marching band stuff and end their show by writing out the school name on the field. Because, seriously... who watches that shit, anyway? Well... other than the ladies.
