I don't really care if it's a return to form. I don't really think there ever was one "form." As long as it's Pearl Jam and it's good, I don't care what form it's in.
One thing I DO know? It won't sound like Ten, VS., Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act or Avocado. None of those sounded just like the preceding records or had the same type of energy as the preceding records. This album will have its own sound, energy and feel just like all the others did.
I'm pumped for Backspacer, and that's all that really matters to me.

This "return to form" phrase is absolute nonsense........there never was a form....same w/ the pop rock talk.........
I am just hoping that the same thing that happened to Kings of Leon (in Australia) doesnt happen to Pearl Jam here. Kings of Leon made their best albums before anyone knew who they were, their music was raw and untouched and brilliant and then they quickly became an overnight commercial giant because of 2 or 3 catchy radio friendly songs in their latest album.
All of a sudden they were the talk of the town everywhere amongst young teeny boppers who jumped on the wagon while there was hype. Consequently thousands of teens who were huge fans of 3 songs filled the shows they played here, talking on their phones during the show and that just only stayed till they played the hits and then left the show and all in all it ruined the whole concert and vibe. The band was pissed off, the crowd was shithouse, it sucked.
Now I like the Fixer, and I agree with everyone who has said that its not a big deal if they have a few radio songs, but now all of a sudden many radio stations here (who have never played Pearl Jam before) have jumped aboard and are flogging the single to death as well as digging up the older radio friendly songs that pj have and flooding the radio with them announcing how good they are, how much they rock etc. These are stations that stick pearl jam on after Lady GAGA, Eminem, Katy Perry etc. They are giving away tickets to the shows and promoting the shit out of them, and I know that should be a good thing but not when its a hip hop/pop radio station.
I can just see them flogging the band to death and then when the album is over and the tour is finished they will wipe them like a dirty arse and a tainted pearl jam will remain (a.k.a Kings of Leon style). I will be heartbroken if this all ends up how im dreading it will be or has any effect on the shows here. Sorry about the gigantic rant, but i had to vent and I'm sure they will be some grillings in store for me but thats how im feeling.
Cheers

i think your worrying to much about the crowd thing. Pj has always had a few douchebag fans. they dont make much difference. and KoL was starting with a much smaller hardcore audience than PJ is now.

There is no way the The Fixer is being played as much as the KOL singles...they are on OZ radio 4-5 times a day, everyday.. I have only heard The Fixer a few times, and I am wrapt when I do. I would love for more people to get into the greatest band in the world....Pearl jam will never have a crowd at their concerts like the recent KOL tour. I was in the front section and was astounded with the amount of kids that new 3 songs...who forks out that much money to hear 3 songs played!!
I'll ride the wave where it takes me

Pearl Jam uses their music like Neil Young does, they don't compromise it, they write and play what they feel and what they want and damn the consequences, and THANK GOD FOR THAT! Every album has had it's own "flavor" and that just makes PJ's spice rack all the better........
