Ofthegirl99, it was in response to a specific query about lp delivery dates, and on a whim I asked about the downloads.
I think it's a real pity. Like a lot of others here, I'm pretty much dead against illegally downloading official releases from bands that I support. We can only hope that the band will make these shows more widely available, but the question is whether it will definitely happen, and if so how soon into the future?
These shows will obviously be quickly available on the web for free, yet I'm sure there are many of us who would gladly buy an extra copy of the cd to get our hands on the shows if that option was available to us.
I hope that my pre-ordered lp will have the codes instead, but I'm sure 10c would have mentioned that as my initial email included a query on lp delivery dates.
When we found the things we loved,
They were crushed and dying in the dirt.
We tried to pick up the pieces,
And get away without getting hurt,
But they caught us at the state line,
And burned our cars in one last fight,
And left us running burned and blind,
Chasing something in the night.
hopefully we get more info before the actual release. I dont mind purchasing multiple copies, but I know many cant afford it and I will only do so if the shows are in FLAC and are complete. however, the way 10C likes to keep everything secret, I wouldnt be surprised if we dont find out which shows are available/how the downloads work until the first east coasters go buy the album and access the shows.
Just to update, according to an email I got from 10c today, only the Target version of the CD will provide access to the vault shows.
Wow, that's kind of depressing. So what do the 10C fan club members get for preordering the CD? Just special packaging? I still think, as I mentioned at the start of this post, that maybe the 10C will include something from the vaults for us, but in the form of an actual CD? Sort of like they did with Avocado. I mean, otherwise, why are they allowing non-fan club members to download shows from the vaults but not fan club members? Aren't fan club members the crazies who would want all these vault shows? My casual PJ friends who might buy this at Target won't care about downloading vault shows, I know that.
I mean, otherwise, why are they allowing non-fan club members to download shows from the vaults but not fan club members?
to $ell more copie$.
do you remember the release of Zeitgeist (Smashing Pumpkins)? there were like 6 different versions, each with a different bonus track. what do you think the purpose of that was? many people might just buy one and download the other bonus songs, but if even 5-10% of fans buy multiple copies, those are extra copies sold.
PJ might be trying to hit a homerun with this release in terms of sales so that they get recruited by one of the big labels again but have the leverage to structure the deal like they want, if that makes sense (a big label deal where the band still calls the shots), and the way to do that is big time sales.
nature of the beast these days. gotta do what you can to sell albums, and bonus stuff is the way to do it.
I can understand people wanting FLAC. FLAC has no data loss and MP3 does. FLAC causes less listening fatigue. FLAC burned to CD = CD, MP3 burned to CD is lesser quality compared to purchasing a CD. If you use IPOD's or portable devices, it probably doesn't matter. If you listen to decent home sound systems, the difference is pretty clear. It would be great if both were offered. I personally wouldn't think twice, I'd go straight for the FLAC. For the better quality.
A second note: If one of the vault shows was HOB with Robert Plant, I'd probably have a heart attack.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
Well my plan as it stands is to get my drunken and hung-over ass up as quickly as possible that Sunday morning and make the hour drive to the nearest Target to get my copy...enjoy the ride back home blasting the album as loud as my stereo will go and then popping that bad boy in the computer as soon as I hit the door.
Then again...depending on what the details of the 10C edition end up being and whether I am enticed to pre-order that version or not....while assuming those cds will arrive before the actual release date....I may blast that bad boy on the way to Target Sunday morning, blast it more on the way back home and then set about downloading me some concerts.
Either way...it's gonna be a great day!!
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

yeah, i remember that pumpkins album and i remember how ridiculous i thought it was at the time. now here i am considering buying the target CD just to get the free downloads - so paying for the album twice, which i never thought i'd do! ugh. well, i guess when it's your favorite band you'll make some concessions. still kind of hoping we'll get something vault-related besides just the book-like packaging. whatever, the target disc will prolly only cost, what, $9.99 or a little more? I suppose it's not too much to spend for some vault shows if i decide to go that route.

Look at this way... If PJ put on their "Goods Section" 11 vault shows at $9.99 each, we'd probably see a celebration that would all but take this site down. So the Target thing is 2 for $9.99 or $5 apiece. That's really good! And PJ gets good sales numbers for Backspacer, and gets more per CD due to the deal they made. Everybody's happy.

yeah, it's a good point you make. it's not a big deal to buy two copies - i once bought a second copy of Vs. just b/c it had slightly different packaging (it was like a slip case type cd jacket instead of the original old plastic cd cover). i found it used someplace and scooped it up. so this is not a big deal, really. i am really excited to get a crack at the vault and i hope the shows offered skew more from pre-2000. i want some early to mid 90s shows.

If it stays as Target only, North Americans are happy. Different story for those overseas. Do Target do international shipping? Even if they do, the price goes up considerably.
It'd be great to see the shows in the 'Goods' section. But when? They would hardly do that before Christmas - if at all - as its possible it would violate the terms of their exclusive agreement with Target.

let's wait and see what the details are before we get upset. whether or not you can access the vault shows based on your location, you know you'll be able to acquire the shows somewhere. music and computer files dont really adhere to geographic restrictions, if you know what I mean (not that I am condoning that).
if the vault shows are mp3 and I decide not to buy the Target version, I'll just wait to get the shows. it's not like I'm going to listen to all 11 shows that one day...I mean, it's football Sunday!
Yeah, I'm just thinking out loud. Also, I was hoping that maybe if this was discussed by a few people, it might generate a response from someone in 10c admin. The album is released in a month, so I would assume they have most of the production/distribution details sewn up by now.
As of now, it doesn't look good for overseas fans getting access to the shows legally. It's hard to ignore an official email from 10c.
Hope you get your FLAC versions. I know DMB offer 'Vault' shows on their website in MP3 and FLAC format, but they're for purchase. 'Freebies' might only be offered in 320kbps MP3, like DITP. Perfectly fine with me, but I'm no audiophile.

This doesn't sound all that different than the ITW CD. I ordered it through TC, and then I found out that iTunes had four extra tracks. I got a snazzy t-shirt because I bought it through here, but I would have preferred to pay less and get more music.
I've always preferred to cut out the middle man and give my money directly to the band, but not when it means that I am receiving an inferior product. (and by inferior I'm referencing quantity, not quality).

Like I was saying in another thread, that's bullshit! We already have to pay US dollars for the stuff online, I would have now to drive up to a Target in Syracuse to get those damn codes??? I usually buy everything that PJ release but in this case, I hope that I'll be able to find it online 'cause I don't find it fair for the non-American fans that don't have a Target in their country. Call me a cry-baby but I'd like to see everyone having the same opportunity, even if you live in... Mongolia!

I can understand being upset..somewhat. Is this much different then releasing records in different regions that have extra songs...ie Ten in Japan? Only difference, is with todays world, you will still be able to access to the songs you are missing, easily and free instead of paying $50 for an "import".
I love how MP3-only people would rather force everyone to have shitty sound quality than learn how to convert their own fucking MP3's. These vault boots BETTER be available in FLAC, or it will be a slap in the face to fans.

Why can't they just explain in black and white what will be included in all the different versions?...I don't understand.
Because then people might be able to make informed buying decisions, instead of getting anxious and ending up pre-ordering from the 10c AND buying from Target AND buying at a local indie store.

Ummm....I only listen to FLAC material when it is available, as I'm not a fan of MP3's outside of transfering my discs to ipod. That being said, I think calling any freebonus material a "slap in the face" is a bit strong. If we aren't paying anything extra for the vault recordings, then we have no reason to gripe about the format, do we? Something along the lines of "beggers can't be choosers", ya know what I'm saying? Hey, I hope the shows are available in FLAC too, but it's certainly nothing to get worked up over. Xanax is your friend.
