Because they shaved their beards and had a hit song, they "sold out"?

You're not exactly going to hear "Crawl" in a shampoo commercial, I mean, other than "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody", which are both good songs, there isn't anything on Only by the Night that screams "smash hit". They're not trying to write radio hits, it's just that their sound has evolved to something more anthemic, rather than the Southern garage rock that they started out with. If they continued along that path, all you'd get is fans complaining that they don't try new things.

For what it's worth, there were a ton of teenage girls at the KOL show in Philly in June '07, before they allegedly sold out. I couldn't believe it.
"They said ... timing was everything
made him ... want to be everywhere
there's a ... lot to be said for nowhere."

Any band that writes a song like "Cold Desert" on their mainstream "pop" album is okay in my book.
