Best bootleg to introduce someone to PJ?

So I'm giving my 18 y/o brother PJ - Rearviewmirror for Christmas this year as we have similar music tastes, hoping to get him hooked on the drug that is Pearl Jam. However, it seems to me that the real magic of the band is all the outstanding bootlegs. I have tons of boots, but I need some help narrowing it down. What ONE bootleg would people recommend I add on to the greatest hits album? I figure it should be something fairly comprehensive (i.e. last 8 yrs or so), but feel free to disagree with me. What are your thoughts?

  • The bootleg that got me hooked was the 03 Mansfield III (7/11 I think). Its got 45 songs including a 12 song accoustic set. Just based on sheer volume it has to garner some consideration...
    2006- Boston I
    2008- Boston I+II
    2009- Toronto, Philly III+IV
    2010- Bristow, Hartford, Boston, Newark

cook'em just to see the look on there face
  • I would have to say the Gorge 7/23/06. The opening 7 songs absolutely rip of the speakers. SH, Corduroy, WWS, Gods Dice, Animal, DTE and In hiding. It is one of the best boots sound wise. Another good choice is Cleveland 06.
  • 2000: Jones Beach
    2003: Mansfield
    2005: Toronto
    2006: Gorge 7/23
    2008: New York II
  • I would personally stick to a disk that has only two cd's. For a casual, fans a 3 set cd is a little harder to digest.

2000 Jones Beach shows are excellent (night 1 and 2). A fair amount of radio and less popular songs.

2003: Alpine Valley was a great show and the set list is casual friendly.

2005: Winnipeg was a great show and the crowd was great.

    2006: All pretty solid

2008: NY shows had a nice mix and excellent shows.

Also, the 1994 Atlanta disk is excellent sounding with the early PJ intensity.
  • Seattle 2000... Show 72. Is the band at their best... If you could just somehow eliminate Evacuation.
    Detroit '98 - Detroit '03 - Toledo '04 - Grand Rapids '04 - Kitchener '05 - London '05 - Grand Rapids '06 - Cleveland '06 - Detroit '06 - Chicago '07 - West Palm Beach - Tampa '08 - Toronto '09 - Indy '10 - Buffalo '10 - Toronto '11 - London '13

Lollapalooza 08. It's a shorter set, which is good as a long one might wear somebody out and turn them off. Plus, it was almost a greatest hits set, so it's a fun, enegerized listen. Great crowd. All around, a perfect intro. You can't go wrong with the way they opened with Why Go that night.
she was underwhelmed, if that's a word

The Cleveland 06 show was awesome. But am I the only one that thought the Gorge box set sounded like shit? The sound on it was so thin... there was almost NO bass.

I know you mean 07 (it is hard to believe that's when it was) but I agree with you - was at that, and it was a good set. Plus we got to hear Education!

I also agree with Mansfield III.

maybe give him 3, one from the '92-96 era, another from '98-'03, and one from the '06-'08 shows.

    If only there was one.

I wonder this question a lot and its just too hard to choose. Too many great songs to fit in a show. You have problem that there is variable song choice, the version of it and then the era to choose from.

  • The first boot I heard was Lisbon 2000. First show in Europe of the Binarul Tour.

There are a few flubs: missed lyrics, matt's kick drum mic went out, however, the crowd is amazing and the second disc is unreal
  • Milan 2006, the best version of Alive is on this one, also on Immagine in Cornice.

That's the show I used to get some of my friends into PJ (since it was the only show I went to for a while).

But I think its best to introduce someone with Lost Dogs. Once they fall in love with it you can tell them that those are the songs that didn't even make the studio albums :).

the bootleg that got me into the band was

    2000-06-19: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Corduroy, Breakerfall, Hail Hail, Animal, Brain Of J., Faithful, Light Years, Untitled/MFC, Habit, NAIS, Given To Fly, STBC, Red Mosquito, Black, Insignificance, Grievance, I Got Id, Wishlist, DTE, Alive

Last Kiss, Better Man, Sleight Of Hand, Daughter, Rearviewmirror, Porch

    Soon Forget, Indifference

killer setlist, even as someone who wasnt familiar with band. bilstering opening of the show, tons of great jams (RVM, Habit, Porch, Daughter), tons of great mike solos (Red Mosquito, NAIS, Alive), and plenty of ed banter, (including stories for Soon Forget and Insignificance).

good sound, and clear crowd interaction on many songs
  • For me, the 2000 Europe Boots pushed me from an admirer to a fully fledged fan! Katowice (2), Hamburg & Milan are all amazing shows.

Wasn't so keen on some of the 2000 NA boots, sounds was muddier, however Pittsburgh, & Jones Beach 2 are great boots.

The 2003 shows, had no drums, and this really lets them down for me. I thought the band sounded abit sloppy on the Riot Act tour, however State College is a great boot, and 3 hours long to boot!

2006 was great - Camden 2, Paris & Milan are all fine boots.

2008 - errrr, awful mastering on these shows. I can't really listen to them. I guess the Camden show is the best. Avoid Lollapooza, Ed is struggling, and its full of mistakes. Ok the setlist is cool, but if the songs aren't being played very well who cares!
  • Well LO2L is pretty simple. Great quality, General track listing...

Pistoia 2006 - Band performance is excellent, most songs the casual fan would know, with an outstanding crowd. If you haven't heard it, check it out.

You made an interesting post. Of the 61 shows I've attended, this is the boot I would give to a casual fan.

Gorge night 1 '06 is another good one to consider.

And before his first step... He's off again...

Fair enough. I have to say my first boot, what sold me on their live abilities, was Seattle #72 2000, but before I had posted this, I was thinking about giving my bro one of the MSG shows from '08. I appreciate all the input. LO2L was also a big part of MY Pearl Jam education, I must say. Keep the ideas coming!
