A Real issue with a Real solution.

I am a 37 year old fan that has been to 20+ shows. I have obtained tickets to the 2nd Philly show; really looking forward to attending with my brother.

Issue: The price of concessions; Beer, soda, food,etc... In some cases a 20 oz. warm beer can cost a crowd member $10.00-$12.00 dollars. This is keg beer! This is a crime IMO.

Solution: Refuse to purchase concessions. Refuse to pay these prices at shows.

What if we as fans stopped spending this kind of money at the concession stand? I understand PJ won't back this; they receive a good portion of this scratch. I have no real issue with that. Any band that can sell out shows and put butts in the seats like PJ deserves to benefit from the sale of any good or service related to their product. But $12.00 for a cup of beer?!

I would like to hear from those of you that support this real issue. There is something that can be done. don't buy the beer. Don't pay the price of a warm cup of keg beer.

**Philly II, 10/30/09........No more beer for that price!......No More.....No more beer for that price...No More

You can bet your ass I'll refuse to pay $12 for a cup of beer. Drink some beers before the show then bring a flask into the show if need be.

do you really need a formal petition or protest to tell you that it's stupid to pay those prices? I hardly spend a dollar on food or drinks when I go to a show...maybe a $4 bottle of water, and I dont consider myself poor or cheap.

it's a very stupid, American mentality that these things make a show or game more fun. if you cant have fun without these things, then the bad news is that the $50-90 you dropped on the ticket were a waste as well.

Take it easy on the guy, he meant no harm! To the OP - by posting here, you're reaching a minuscule percentage of the venue, there's really no easy way to simply boycott a concession stand at a venue - try and organize that with tens of thousands of people.. best of luck though, it is absurd.

Don't think you'll have to worry about a $12 beer in Philly... $8.00 maybe but not $12... and on another note, if its my money, why the hell do you care how I spend it???

A couple of follow up thoughts:

    1. If you think PJ doesn't receive a percentage of sales from concessions...your frontal lobe isn't fully developed yet..

    2. Although it is your money and it's up to you how you spend it, this is a real problem at venues. Support me in a boycott of concessions on 10/30/09

    3. Thanks for the kind words and support of the issue

Finally, this is not a knock or attack of the band. It just doesn't make sense to pay these prices at a PJ show. I love them for much more than the music*

I hope I am sitting next to this guy at the next show!

Seriously tho, the only way i will buy anything from the concession is if i am really parched and then it will just be coke or water but only as a last resort.

Exactly......I've been doing this for years. At the key arena in Seattle they don't even sell beer or liquor at concerts!!! So a flask is a must if you want to have a drink. Just be carefull not to drink too
    much.(gotta remember the show)

you keep saying that but it doesnt make it true. a real problem is the government controlling all the food, water and medicine that comes into a country, not allowing it to get to the people, and innocent civilians die because of it.

this is free market capitalism, or put more bluntly, taking advantage of stupid people (not directed towards anyone here or personally). it happens all across this country:

-I sold a poster on EB for $500. I dont buy posters for the purpose of re-selling, but if someone is willing to pay a ridiculous amount, I'll take advantage.

-people who cant afford new cars buy them anyways even though the same car driven 10,000 miles and at 20-30% less is sitting right next to it.

-millions of people bought houses they couldnt afford. bank executives made billions and now we are paying for it.

$10 beer is no different. as long as people are stupid enough to pay it, corporations will sell it. this is only a "real problem" for people who cant think on their own, and that is why they are opening their wallets in the first place.

no matter... they will sell concessions

after a few beers before the show... people make dumber decisions... hence id be more inclined to buy $12 beers... heck im sure people would still buy beers if they were $15!

do you know how many impulse purchases ive made after throwing a few back?

idea ive had for some time: open up an electronics store w a bar attatched... get the customers all liquored up and let them loose in an establishment that sells plasmas, blu ray surround sounds systems...or even lap dances!
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...

So I guess you dont buy drinks at the airport, major tourists attractions, large cities, theme parks, sporting events, strip clubs ;) , hotels (dont even think about the mini bar dude) and I guess you dont buy wine when you are at a restaurant as the mark up is often offensive as well

hey, there are just some places that have you by the balls
If I want a drink, Ill pay the $10-but it better be cold, and the spectrum actually has decent beer (in the carts instead of the food stands)

and yes, cool name by the way
buttermaker would have also been cool

i was thinking along the lines of a more retail oriented atmosphere... with lap dances!

I'm with you (on both points). I've rarely purchased beer at a concert. I may have a few drinks before some shows, but hate to spend the same amount for one beer as I would pay for a six pack at a store. Also, I always bring my own water in if the venue allows it.

There is one good thing about expensive beer though. It probably reduces the number of drunk idiots in the crowd.

Agreed. Nothing worse than a long beer line. I will be buying plently of beers although I can promise you they are not close to $12 at the Spectrum.
  • Along the same lines, should we boycott buying $25-40 t-shirts?

I think it's far worse that I had to spend 20 bucks for 2 reg popcorn and 2 reg drinks at a movie the other day. That's sick!! What the fuck was I thinking?!

I refuse to get into a pissing contest with someone naive enough to start this thread. People are going to buy beer no matter how much it costs.

people are already getting shitfaced before the show, coming in and paying $12 a beer because they are already drunk and aren't thinking anything but continuing to be drunk.

oh, you speak Pearl Jam! very original.

again, like I said, people who can think for themselves dont need a group to follow them in a cause. this is why government thinks they need to get involved in every area of our lives, because people have given up trying to think, it's too much work, just do whatever they allow you to do instead and abuse every privilege until one person gets hurt and they take that away as well.
