On I think MSNBC, PETA said they wanted MV to undergo a brain scan before he can take the field to show he's truly remorseful. I was like WHAT, how the hell is that going to prove he's remorseful?
Here's more on their stance on Michael Vick's return to the NFL.
The only way to know for sure if Vick can change his ways is for him to submit himself for a brain scan and psychological test. Based on a number of factors—such as the fact that the right side of the hippocampus is larger than the left in 94 percent of captured psychopaths—these tests can help determine if Vick can ever truly understand that dog fighting is a sick, cruel business. Or, they could suggest that he's doomed to repeat mean, violent behavior in the future—whether with dogs or other human beings. And given that Vick plans to be around a lot of kids, to give talks to them, and to be a star in their eyes again, the world deserves to know who he is inside.
Vick's lawyers have run screaming, but unless and until he passes such a test, PETA will not participate in the production of a Michael Vick anti-dogfighting PSA. We hope that the NFL will require such a test as a precondition to even discussing the possibility of Vick's reinstatement. You can click here to add your name to a petition calling on the NFL to stick to its guns and maintain Vick's suspension until he's taken and passed a brain scan and psychological evaluation.
Peace
IF an NFL team does sign MV which certainly isn't for sure I just don't think his brain needs to be scanned to play football again. PETA must know that he can be a tremendous spokesman for them with the amount of media he could bring to their organization. I think it's better to have a guy like MV speaking positively about PETA and what they do than having his brain tested to see if he's fit to get in the field again.

Thinking the owner that hires him will be getting some greif. Wonder if theres possibility that he goes unsigned? Also it was mentioned in this thread there may be some dog luvin players that like to get revenge for the pooches....how bout his new team mates....surely there will be some tension in the locker room. If I was an owner I'd pass.
Have to say this will be good for nfl.....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Ratings both live and on TV.
Oh he shoulda got 10 years for being an evil human.

Let's get real here, if an NFL owner knew or felt MV could help his team get or win a Super Bowl he'd sign him in a milisecond. The consequences he'll take in the begininig hoever like all things will fade as long as the wins pile up. The fans of that team would jump behind him and the team too.
Also this is the NFL and MV's if he gets on a team, they are professionals first. On the field they WILL do their job no matter what but off many may choose not to hang out with Vick. They WILL do their jobs even the harden pet lover.

I'm not making excuses for him...we all know I HATE ANIMAL ABUSE....but apparently there are some anger issues in his family. Several years back, his younger brother who also played for Va Tech, had some real problems and kinda went off on fans and his fellow teammates etc. Eventually he was booted. So whatever fucked these guys' heads up was serious, and jail may have simply made it worse in Michael's case.
If he were to be a spokesperson for PETA, my feeling is that it would be a case of his doing it because he needed to improve his image. I don't believe someone who is capable of the acts he perpetrated can really experience a shift in their thinking. He simply didn't see anything wrong with it. He may SAY and ACT like he does NOW, but I'm not sure that it's all nothing but PR.
Whether he plays or not, I'm sure many eyes will be watching him for quite a while to come.

His brother actually stomped on a player lying on the ground from the opposing team during a televised game.

I suspect the Players' Union would have a say in the brain scan idea.

nope.
basically i couldn't give a shit about the NFL in any case.
do i consider him a good role model? errrr....no.
however, the man did his penance, that is our justice system....can expect no more of him except to not make that same horrific mistake again. hopefully lesson learned, perhaps some compassion too....and life is all forward motion.

Yes, that's right! Now that you mention it I recall hearing about it. I don't know what was in their family background but it must have been something pretty substantial to send them both off the deep end. It couldn't have been just the fame, and money (in Michael's case). Really horrible story just all the way around.

I went to college in that eastern part of Virginia where they're from and part of the problem with both of them was how they were treated as star athletes all through high school. Many coaches and family members looked the other way when they got out of hand, no one there to get in their face to say, *son you're fucking up get yourself right or get out*.
As long as they continued to star on the field what they did off and sometimes on it they looked the other way. Being so pompous and head above the crowd is not the answer and now it has caught up both of them.

I agree with you. That "do no wrong" mentality that surrounds athletes is really dangerous. It seems the brothers have some real anger issues too. I was thinking some kind of abuse. It's said that abuse begats abuse, and I believe that to be the case more times than not. Michael was a helluva an athlete in college - but he has certainly made some really rotten choices since then.

Put it into perspective...
People wanted Vick's head when this story first broke. He was arrested... tried, convicted and incarcerated. Did the punisment fit the crime... that's debatable. What is not debatable is the law that was in place at the time of his conviction. You cannot change the sentance after the judgement... otherwise, you have an Iran or a North Korea, not America.
Vick served the prescribed sentance the law has set. We don't have to like it... we don't have to like him. If we want to ignore him or hate him or whatever... that's on us. But, America... Her principles... still believes in second chances, regardless of the person.
...
As for the girl and the cat... people feel the same way. She will be tried for the crime... in the justice system of our country. Will the punishment fit the crime... that's debatable.
Don't like the punishment... work to have it changed so the ensuing Michael Vicks will pay the price.
...
And as a footnote... I never liked Vick and like him even less. I'm more of a pure passer kind of guy... than a running back that can throw guy. I don't want to see Vick on the playing field again... but, it's not my call to make. My guess... he has an Oakland Raiders uniform in his future. There should be a law against that... if anything.

this is pretty much my thinking on the topic all summed up.
i may not LIKE the punishment, may not think it enough...but it is what it is. he did serve his time and according to the laws of our country, his responsibility is done. i may think him scum, but in regards to his career.....it's certainly not up to me, and i also like to think that perhaps sometimes people may learn and sure, second chances... i may not believe he or anyone else 'deserves' a second chance, but again, it's how our laws work.
Vick is a pompous ass- was before the charges- his attitude was a terrible example of a ball player. So high on his high horse
Then come to find out he also has no conscious and unfortunately probably is only sorry for what he did because of his own selfish loss.
He is awful example for our young children
and the only good that has come from his terrible actions is awareness and hopefully much tougher laws.
I have no use for men like that those with no heart or compassion just greed.

I whole-heartedly agree with you here.
But... i do not fault Michael Vick for being an example to our children... except as an example of what a horrible person is and that fame and wealth does NOT equate to character. if my kid were to see Vick as a Role Model... i would question my own character traits and check my moral compass because i would see it as MY failure somewhere along the way.
And i HOPE that the laws become more restrictive on puppy mills and the penalties for animal cruelty become more painful. And they call the laws the 'Michael Vick Laws'. Let his cruelty become his legend, not his NFL Career.
