News from Artillery! Brad to do two Pearl Jam posters

From an Artillery email:
"All of the orders from the last sale were put in the mail last weekend.
Sorry it took so long to get these shipped out, but in the midst of trying to
pack them all I had to also work on two new Pearl Jam posters...so it
took me a bit longer to get all the orders packed and in the mail. If you
still haven't received your posters after about two weeks send an email
and let me know (I say two weeks because sometimes things can get
stuck in customs for a while, so give it some time before emailing). "

Does that mean Ames is doing the rest? Not sure I'm thrilled about that...

    maybe tom tomorrow is doing a couple?

    what's your beef with ames? i think they generally do an incredible job. not every poster is a winner but i like their work a lot better than brad's.

    Im an AMES fan too, they have a couple of prints that were a miss, but it's really up to each person's taste I guess, probably some of the ones I like some others don't and viceversa.

    I love BK's work but AMES has some pretty good posters too :)

  • I like them both, before BK came along Ames was amazing, but BK has done some seriously great work in the last 4-5 years.

    I think they both have big hits and misses, just recently BKs hits a better and Ames misses are worse
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}

    work = work +1;

    I love that BK is doing the shark awareness poster - everyone should but it just to help the cause! :)

    As for PJ posters... Ames has never gotten back to their 98 work, and they've been on a decline since with a small exception being that 2008 posters were better than 2006. BK's work isn't always a home run but its a newer option so that always helps. Just my .02 there...

    ames definitely peaked in 98...no question

    but they have done some really nice prints since then

    Older Ames stuff (98 is sweet) is great for me, but I just don't like their work in recent years. Brad also has many misses, but has plenty of hits.

    +1

    BK is more design forward and Ames is more retro, yes ames made some ugly posters but i have faith on the boys.

    Brad never said he was doing only 2 PJ posters... he did say there were a lot more posters planned for 09. I'm guessing the 2 he's working on finishing now are Toronto and Chicago, then we'll see some more for the rest of the tour (aka PHILLY)

    He's definitely doing a Toronto poster (just ask D). I'm not sure about the rest, but I hope he does the Philly shows.

    As far as Ames vs. BK, Ames definitely peaked in 98, like others said. Ames has a bigger body of work, but to me I'd like to have about 30% of their prints and about 5% are frameable. BK on the other hand, I'd like to have about 50% and about 25% is frameable. Ames has more prints, but I like a higher percentage of Brad's work.

    Yup, I'm tired of monsters, tired of politics, tired of skulls... Classic PJ posters are just the cool, subtle designs (Honolulus etc)

    I agree. Ames has not been bringing their A-game since 98 or so. I think the 2005 Canadian tour was the low point for the Ames bros, where they only had one poster out of about 12 that was even above average. That was also the time that Brad started making posters and he's designed a number of amazing prints since 05 - Gorge 05 & 06, Atlantic City, Hamilton, LA 06, Virginia Beach, Portugal/Spain, Dusseldorf, etc.

    I also prefer Brad's use of colours to the typical Ames bros white background poster with 2-3 colours in the print. But everyone has different tastes...

    What is this aversion to politics that I keep seeing around here?

    Art is politics, especially with this band. I would think that fans would want gig art that reflects the band's music and politics -- and the times.

    That said, some of Brad Kalusen's most amazing poster work is undoubtedly political. Washington, D.C., 2006; the Showbox poster; Camden 08; South America 05; Vedder Seattle 08.

    Speaking of politics in prints...does anyone think we will see Obama (whether it be subtle or blatant) in any of the tour posters this year? I'm thinking there will be at least one.

    Well.. on a technical sense we'll see him in every poster. He'll be behind the booth taking a bit more $$ than normal from the merch sales. :D

    I will never forgive Ames for the SF06 posters (SF3 in particular 7/18/06, but 2 is just as hideous).
    http://www.thecolorsblend.com/2006_2.htm

    There was just an amazing progression of posters in 06 -- Ames dropping some awesome ones, then BK ... and I'm soooo stoked as the tour approaches SF.

    And then we get the craptacular SFIII poster. Worst poster ever?
    I don't think BK has ever so blatantly just phoned one in like SFII and III.

    Are we talking about the '06's ?
    i can understand and respect your opinion
    allthough I would have to have some disagreement with you here.
    Artistically, not much to this trio of San Frans of '06 .
    However, through the art , is a deep story.
    Think of the time this concert happened,
    think of that days ( and todays ) current events
    and maybe you'll get the overall theme.
    Single-ly , each poster isnt really much, ( allthough the jacket one is very nice IMO )
    But when you put all 3 together they tell the more meaningful , poignant and overall solemn story .

    I'm nowhere near San Fran but when I saw these 3 after they were exposed to the internet , I said I really wanted these 3 in my humble little colllection.
    Im impressed how 3 simple plain looking screens can tell a story like they ( Ames ) did .

    I'd say the absolute worst poster , in terms of artistic integrity , would have to be the Boston 06
    astronaut riding the whooly mammouth ( figuratively - the future riding on the back of the past ) . Sure it was clever to hide the words inside of the whoolys fur ,

    but the use ( or non - use ) of colors here is just reallly bad.
    ( yeah im colorblind & this aint helping it any )
    Talk about ugly.
    blech !

    And to boot, this was my extra in the Ames Sub !
    Doublke - sided 1/1 ugliness !
    i couldnt give this one away !

    Also-on the poster thing -- we are forgetting here that the same designs are recycled sometimes with different colors for different nights &/or even different cities -- ( ie : Camden 06 , Borgata , Boston 08 , MSG 08 )

    so maybe they spread some of the work out amongst Brad, Ames, any others, ect, ...
    For the ones who had a notion, a notion deep inside

    Saskatoon wasn't bad. Definitely the 2nd best poster. Kitchener was just ok. Given everything about that show that was great the fact that I haven't framed that poster speaks volumes about what I think of the art :)

    No, no, i GET the theme which to me was even MORE cliche -- oh hey, it's SF so lets do some Anti-War posters! Agreed the jacket is the best and in fact no call to deride that. The last two -- literally -- cookie cutter.

    Seriously, I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but Obama cut most of our taxes this year with the stimulus package. What's more, you're paying local sales tax at merch booths, if you're paying taxes not federal, taxes.

    Now where was that academic IQ chart showing the abysmal standing of Pearl Jam fans vs. other bands' fans from earlier this year?

    A lot of people rant first, and do their research later.. no need to generalize and insult our collective intellect (especially considering I am going to go on the assumption that you as well are a Pearl Jam fan)

    And I thank you for proving the earlier post about why people don't like politics in every poster.

    Second though... I said he would be taking money from the sales at the merch booth. That, my friend, is going to end us as income to the band which is indeed taxable at a federal level.

    And i could be wrong here, but I'm guessing PJ is in that upper income bracket that is going to be paying a lot more in taxes over the coming months and years. So you can try and bash my IQ, but a little extra attention and you would have seen that my comment was that more would be taken from the sales and not taken from people buying merch at the shows. Pearl Jam has upped their merch prices enough over the last few tours to notice the increase already.

    But again thanks for showing everyone why politics in every poster can rub people the wrong way - I love when it happens without anyone asking for specific examples! :lol:
