To be honest I find this whole not likeing the fixer thing very bizarre. I am only saying this because after the first listen I had visons of Yied, and thought, Damn I really love Brenden O'Brian. So I log on to see whateveryone else thinks, and DAM!! everyone is all crazy up in arms about how bad the song sucks! I was totally shocked. I think its a mix of a couple of things. First off, people are pretty resistant to change. Toss in a song that doesn't fit the mold of a rockin, once/go/whipping PJ tune and all chaos breaks loose. I also feel like there is a certin segment of the pearl jam fan base that hasn't really got what they wanted to hear since maybe no code and they are not willing to except that Pearl jam is more than just a hard rock band. That said I guess I represent maybe a fan that has always loved all pearl jam songs and especially ones that are a little more outside of the box. I mean come on, No Way, otherside, wishlist, the entire Bineural album, these are all amazing. I think once people listen to the song in the album context they will relax. But maybe the album will be all upbeat and pearljam meets the beachboysish, and really what would be so bad about that. I have full confidence in the band. The bottom line is, this is the album they want us to hear and enjoy. If its way different from anything else they have ever done, why is that so disapointing? Ok and in reading back what I just wrote, I am in no way trying to start shit about this type of fan or that type of fan. I am just trying to say that some of us are maybe easier to please?

fucking great post. couldn't agree more

Thanks for the positive comments. I actually considered chiming into the super long " don't like the fixer but still like pj thread" however, it just seemed way too negative and I honestly didn't want to bump it up. I just want to represent for all of us that are out there and do love the "wierd" stuff. I am the person that skips evenflow and would rather hear gods dice or thin air instead. I think the craziest part is all this talk of Ed's lyrics. I think they are great and well so eddie. I guess I just thought people would be more amped, I just loved the overall feeling of the song

All songs of Pearl Jam do that to me; I listened to it and think "what the fu@#!" and then it "clicks". If I wasn't stranded on vacation with a cassette deck/walkman with Vitalogy in Prague some time - where I was forced to listen to the album over and over again out of sheer boredom - I would probably never have come a fan...

    Corduroy did it for me...

That said, I liked Fixer from the start tho. Nice tune. And not pretentieus.

A lot of PJ tunes take some time for me to warm up to.

The Fixer is NOT one of them.

I've tried and tried, and I still think it's a crappy tune. :(

As someone who absolutely hated this song on first few listens, I have to say that I recant. I mean I really "end of Pearl Jam" hated it. Guess that shows not to judge the song until after quite a few listens. It's really grown on me. The first few times I listened to it, it came off as way to "pop" and I hated it. But the more I listen the less I get that. It's just an upbeat song. Certainly some "pop" to it, but in a good way. My favorite pearl jam song "Down", I don't know that people consider pop, but more of an upbeat, positive song. I liken Fixer to that, and I'm really liking it. To this day, while I understand why they didn't put "Down" on Riot Act (didn't fit the tone of that album at all) I really wish they would have. Would have made one of their weaker albums (in my opinion, apologies to Riot Act fans) a lot stronger.

I really agree with your thoughts in The Fixer... haha, "end of Pearl Jam" hated it... I know exactly what you mean.

:lol::lol: True... Sad but true... I hate to admit it (and will say it very softly) but during the early nineties I was an old fashioned rock fan. I liked GNR etc. I thought PJ, Nirvana and the whole grunge scene was somewhat self indulgent and self destructive. Fuck me, I was so young and stupid then...

I became a fan in 1997; years and years later. What can i say: I'm a very sloooooooowwww learner.

  • Pearl jam is a ROCK band.. and people like them because they rock.. not because they can write catchy pop tunes;p If that were the case, Britney spears would be better at the craft. So i understand completely why people are all up in arms about this.. I just think this song takes a big shit on what pj used to be about but im not suprised.. they are going somewhere different, i just hope the younger fans like myself can still relate..

I think younger fans are missing a bit of perspective in that this type of opinion, that pearl jam has changed, has occurred almost every year since '94. An impromptu list:

It began with the idea that they were a record company creation
Ed had become full of himself and they were focused on money when battling Ticketmaster
Vitalogy - believe it or not many fans of Ten and Vs. did not like Vitalogy and they lost the fringe metal fans
    Grammy Acceptence
No Code - where do I begin, well the Who You Are single and the collective "What the hell".

At these point they have pealed off 9/10ths of their fanbase by doing the unexpected. If anything things have mellowed out and maybe got a little artistically stagnant. The point is that they have always challenged the preconceptions of fans, media, who and whatever. The Fixer is nothing new. They do what they want and this is what they want: some fans elated, some fans confused, some fans pissed. Imh, this is what any artist should work to achieve.

Listen to mikes playing and maybe you'll change your mind. He makes these little trippy noises during parts of the song. they sound really cool. If you use headphones its on the left ear.

    Well, you might be right.

This one just might take a LOT longer to warm up to.

Still having a hard time getting past the lyrics...

I think while not anything groundbreaking, the guitar work is pretty solid on the song.

Seriously ... I'm a lyric guy. I can listen to someone singing on top of armpit noises if the lyrics are solid. On the flip side, I will not listen to music with ridiculous lyrics. Will not.

"The Fixer" lyrics are fine. In fact, they are deceptively deep, in my opinion.
