PARACHUTES?!?!?! What are you smokin' !? :D

Parachutes is the only PJ track EVER that I have only listened to once all the way through! I've tried so many times to like it but it's just not to be...

If you only listened to it in it's entirety once, how is that trying to like it? I'm just asking. Personally not one of my favorites, but I listen to the whole song every now and again.

Because every time I play that album I listen to Parachutes. I get about half way into that song and I have to skip it. I've listened to it dozens of times, I've just only made it all the way to the end once.

  • The writer certainly knows the band, I'll give him his due there. The list so far is pretty spot on. I was surprised that as a fan and a board reader he is not a fan of Bugs, and that Evacuation was so low, but the guy is doing a pretty good job IMO.

Please keep this thread going, or make it sticky, so we can keep up with it. I like the fact that even the songs he doesn't rate highly he doesn't rip into. He has something positive to say about most things and some interesting little bits of info.

+1 Let's sticky this. Its a great way to get pumped for Backspacer, and hes definitely respectful and knowledgeable...

It's nice to see a list like this where the person puts some thought into the picks. Most of the top 500 songs, top 100 albums, etc. we see from Rolling Stone, MTV and the like feel arbitrary and lazy. And while the nature of his list is going to lead to some arbitary numbering, for the most part he's done a better than solid job. It's got me thinking about my own list and it's a fun read. Nothing wrong with that. Of course, outside of I Got Id as my No. 1 Pearl Jam song, I'm finding it impossible to do my own top 10, let alone the entire catalog of songs.

I finally found some of the bottom that I can "complain" about :D:D:D . I really like U, Big Wave, and Leavin' Here, but again somethings gotta be down at the bottom. It was funny that they were pretty much right in a row!

I really like Aye Davanita too, but it obviously can't be placed much higher.

I can't wait until Given to Fly makes the list, I am intrigued as to where it end up.

I agree with most of this list but why include covers? Sonic Reducer kicked major ass back in the day and Ed's vocals on Leavin here are fucking deadly.
I'm surprised Unemployable (Unlistenable) hasn't made the bottom of this list. I find Big wave far more exiting to listen to than that boring ass song Unemployable which i consider responsible for ruining the vibe of S/T.

what will be #1? My bets he goes with Black or Alive

yeah, i bet it's one of those two...

they aren't my personal favorites, but they are damn good songs and i couldn't argue with either one them being placed first.

Big Wave I can understand, although I'd still place Unemployable at a higher spot than it.

Leavin' Here is not a bad song but I don't take too much offense to it's spot on the list seeing it's not a PJ song to begin with.

U, meh. It's a take it or leave it song. I'll listen to it if I don't have access to the FWD button. Not bad, but definitely not a great PJ song.

Aye Davanita I actually quite like and could be placed higher. I can think of at least 10 songs and 1 in particular that could have taken it's place (I'm lookin' at you Unemployable!!).

GTF better make the top 5. I would put it at #1 ahead of Black or Alive but I'm sure those will be the top 2. If GTF isn't at least in the top 10 I call the whole thing bogus

i know a TON of people that list GTF as their favorite!! but for me (don't throw things!!) i think it's a great song... and that's it. it's solid, and i love listening to it... but it's not the be all, end all...

I'm throwing things at you right now!!! Damn you for not loving MY favorite song!!

Some day you'll understand the greatness that is Given to Fly :D Honestly though it's the only song I NEVER skip, EVER! I could listen to it on repeat for days :)

    ::dodges shoes::

it's a GREAT song, but objectively, it's not their best!! i can appreciate that it has immeasurable value, but objectively, there are songs that are technically better! ::ducks::

I don't much care for g2f. It's one of the few songs that sounds better on the album than live. Especially the last few tours... it has SUCKED in concert lately. They took a beautiful, dramatic, 4 minute epic and turned it into a 3 minute 15 second staple obligation. It's played so fast it sounds terrible.

That's all besides the point, though. It's still great songwriting. Just because they haven't been playing it well does not lessen the greatness of the studio version.

very true. i love this song. the studio version is amazing..i was just saying that maybe they could "slow it down" a bit when they play it live.
