my take is the guy was chomping at the bit to start a fight with a cop, and couldnt pass up an opportunity to cause a scene, even though the cop was really helping him. he was trying to cause an incident and the cop fell right into it.

but................ the cop did abuse his authority. arresting people because they piss you off is bullshit. I dont think racism was involved at all. just good old fashioned abuse of power.

i have a hard time feeling sorry for either of them. one scumbag ran into another one.

My guess is just that the cop was offended at being accused of racism when, all things considered, he was being pretty reasonable. But when it comes down to it... I think that given the power a police officer has, he's got to be the bigger man and just walk away and let Gates keep ranting. If this guy was teaching a racial profiling class, I'm guessing he won't anymore. One less decent cop out there. But the bottom line is, a crotchety old black man was quick to cry profiling. Maybe it was justified, maybe it wasn't. But you let him rant and throw a tantrum on his porch all he wants and you get the hell outta there and investigate other crimes. The cop's response was human, but I think we necessarily need to hold police to higher standards of judgment and behavior than average citizen. I don't blame him for throwing the cuffs, but he still shouldn't have done it.
    i agree

Dude, you are way out of line with that comment. I think you owe the people of the Republic of Niger an apology!

I sincerly apologize to all the lovely residents of Niger. Needless to say, I don't type or write the actual word I was trying to all that often.

The Daily Show was fantastic last night. So was Colbert. They had a segment on taser guns. They showed a bunch of cops using them on people simply because they wouldn't listen or comply with everything they were saying. One of these citizens was a 72 year old woman. It was grossly disgusting and reminded me somewhat of this case.

What do those here think of the idea Obama has of inviting the 2 guys for a beer to smooth things over?

But, given that he did comment, you think it's stupid to sit down with the two guys in a more friendly environment? :? :?

Yep, Obama should say, I shouldn't have commented on a matter I was not a part of nor did I have very much of the information of the situation. And be done with it.

Of all the things that happen...to use this as an example of profiling or racism is an insult to those cases where it really does occur.

I for one would hope the police would not take the mans word that it was his house but rather show ID.

ya never know. one of my roommates is a nanny and her employers went out of town so after the India Arie concert i went with her to pick the dog up and bring her home for a few days....as she fumbled with trying to lock the front door and i was standing behind her a cop drove by. by the time we started making our way up the walkway he had turned around and asked us what we were doing? she replied her employers were out of town and she was getting their dog and he just said 'oh, ok, have a nice night' and drove off. we both thought it was funny how little he inquired
    don't compete; coexist

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

"I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank." - Barack Obama

when you told me 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em'
i was thinkin 'death before dishonor'

Taken from another thread I started but the questions still deserve to be asked

What kind of neighbor was this anyway? She didnt even know what her neighbor looked like? Hadnt she seen him enter his house billions of times in the past?

I dont know about you, but if someone who fits the description of my neighbor and looks like my neighbor is entering his house, my first thought isnt "gee this person is breaking in". And I certainly wouldnt call the cops to report it.

Apparently she didn't get a good enough look at the men to even know what their race was.
