The Gorge - 3 Years Ago Today....

"Good morning campers!"

"I know we've said this before, but this time I really mean it... how are ya? 'Cause it's hot like a motherfucker!!"

Hard to believe it's been three years already, but WHAT a show! Hundred and ten degrees, middle of the desert, and we get rewarded with a 31 song marathon, including one of the better encores in recent memory:

Footsteps, Once, Alive, State of Love and Trust, Crown of Thorns, Leash, Porch

PLUS an amazing "It's OK" and "Dirty Frank," well, what else can you say? Sometimes I think it gets short changed because of the majesty of the 2005 show, but on its own I think it stands as one of the truly great nights to be a fan of this band. Every time I listen to the bootleg I feel lucky to have been a part of it.

Thanks for the memories, boys. Can't wait to experience more of 'em!

You may well be right. What I definitely remember is that the extra large beers were warm for me by the time I reached the midway point - and I was drinking them quickly!

I ALSO remember my girlfriend trying to get an ice water from a vendor and being told she had to pay for the cup like it was a soft drink... so basically $6 for a cup of tap water!!!

This was such a fantastic show and setting, I got chills just reading the original post. Thanks for bringing back great memories. It was so freaking hot, but when that sun went down, it got a tad better, didn't it? HA HA.

Can't wait for more memories like that from this great band!!

Crikey... can't believe it's been 3 years already!! I didn't get to go since I live 6000 miles away... but we all knew it was gonna be a special show, so I stayed up half the night watching the setlist come through... and was amazed when Dirty Frank showed up for the first time in over a decade!! ...Then bought the bootleg as soon as it was available! Good times! :D

Wow 3 years already! It was indeed a great night. I've been lucky enough to be at many great PJ nights like Gorge '05 and Benny, but I'll never forget the heat at that show. Thanks to whoever that was in row 17 (stones side) with the fan water spritzer...

The moment when Eddie said "a lot of people here were supporting this group when we wrote incredibly shitty songs... and we're gonna play one for you right now", and they go Dirty Frank... Just awesome!

It's been a few months, but I'm going to put on the boot of that show on tonight.

"It's getting cooler and hotter at the same time!!"

What a show...probably one of the highlights of my Pearl Jam fan career! I was only able to go to the first show, but I think I picked the right one to be at. Looking forward to making some new memories this September! Cya all there at Keyarena!

I remember Ed talking about wearing shorts again for the first time in many years and and stating as he stuck his leg out for everyone to see that "he wasn't trying to bring back grunge fashion....there was a reason, there was a reason.... it's fucking HOT!!!"
Laughed my ass off at that one.

I believe it was 116 not 110. Whatever it was, it didn't really matter. Watching the sun set in the evening sky behind the band on stage is something I will NEVER forget.

Aww man, by far my greatest show ever! I flew all the way from South Carolina, which was the farthest and most money I've ever spent to see Pearl Jam and man did it pay off. Opening with Wash, you knew it was going to be amazing. The Daughter-It's OK jam was like a religious experience for me and I'm not even religious! When he said that line and then I heard the riff to Dirty Frank, I couldn't believe what I was hearing!

I had the end of the aisle seat on Mike's side about 15 or so rows back remember during the second encore break there was this couple that had been next to me the whole night and they started to leave when about 2 minutes later they came back to their seats. The guy leaned over and said, "hey man, they won't let anybody leave because something is about to happen", and just then the crowd erupted and the spot light appeared to reveal Ed on top of the FOH booth. Of, course everybody knows what happened next, they began to play Last Kiss but when the song was over and the rest of the band goes into Inside Job, I see Ed run right by me escorted by security with lights. I should have tried to stick my hand out for a 5'er, but I think I was nervous about getting jumped or thrown out :?

I had so many great song firsts: Wash, It's OK tag, Crown Of Thorns, Leash (My favorite!), Baba O'Riley, Dirty Frank and Little Wing/Star Spangled Banner Interlude during Yellow Ledbetter! All those combined with the great selection of S/T songs, if they would have played Comeback, I probably would have jumped right off the cliffs! I think I sang at the top of my lungs during every song :D

  • Awww man what an incredible 2 days that was!!! I do remember the sweltering heat. Thank God of the mist tent night 2! WOW....and that incredible view! That is hands down the most beautiful venue I've ever been to.

I still have the setlist from night 1 as a reminder. I had to stare down Rick for it, but he eventually caved. Thanks Rick!!!! :D

It was the perfect way to cap an AMAZING 12 day road trip. The longest I've ever taken. I met some amazing people along the way. I will always treasure those memories.

that was the day my depression left me.... I felt so gosh darned HAPPY!!

Now, whenever one of us (hubby or me) says that it's hot, our reply is, "Yes, but is it Gorge hot?"

Wow, 3 years ago. I really thought it was two.

I remember flying out to Seattle alone from New Jersey and just having a very great time.

It was so hot, oh my god. I remember the 2nd day I was walking from the campsite to the little convenience store about mid-day along that winding gravel road and my sandals ACTUALLY melted off my feet half-way there. The straps just melted off . I had to walk BAREFOOT back to the campsite on that ultra-hot gravel. That was probably one of the most painful things I've had to go through lol.

I also especially remember both mornings, waking up and being glad that I was able to fall asleep in the heat and that I got to sleep in and figuring it was 10:00 or so. And I'd check my watch and it'd be like... 5:25 a.m. Lol. I guess the heat started early and the sun was out early and ... that was a sinking and surreal feeling both days.

    And the concerts were great.

Brings a smile back to my face.

    Cheers.

Try crashing at 5am and then, no joke, waking up at 7:30 thinking oh my, this is going to be the longest and hottest day of my life. Still had to work off the booze from the night before.
Nothing a dip in the river and a long nap in the shade there didn't cure and get me ready for night 2.
    What amazing shows!

Unreal. 3 years ago? My flight from Louisville to Seattle was cancelled due to thunderstorms the day before the show and I was freaking out that I would be late getting in on the day of the show. After a 5 hour plus flight, and the 3 hour drive from Seattle, I made it with plenty of time for a shower! No camping for me though, I cheated and stayed in a little motel 30 minutes away with nice air conditioning and a pool for 50 bucks a night!

It was so beautiful there. I took some cool pictures of the Gorge and of PJ. I would love to go back and see them again there, even with the 116 degrees. I brought a plastic bag filled with ice in with me, then every time I went to buy a beer, they were nice enough to fill my big bag up with ice again :)

That show is one of the bootlegs that I listen to the most.

  • The most amazing two nights of my life :) At 6 a.m. it was already 85 degrees. No sleeping in the tent for me. I had some great REDRUM cake :wink:wink: from a hippie tent. Then we went to the lake and the water was FUCKIN' cold! Damn, it was strange 116 on top and 40 down low. The boys weren't enjoying themselves in that water!

Anyway, incredible night. Can't believe it's been 3 years.

    oh my.

this was the concert that almost killed me, literally! setting up tent i got weak and almost fainted and had to go stand under a cold shower. later at the concert again had to stick my head under the cold running 'drinking' water several times, but making the trek to it uphill was killer.

    but, oh so worth it!

    so worth it.

    i would have died happy!

it was the best of times, it was the worst of times....

Did anyone recall or get stuck in the humongous ten club line like me? How torturous was it to hear Pearl Jam start to play and I was trapped in line? It was awesome to get down to the seats and find them right below Mike! That was truly sweet. But it was so incredibly hot and being right next to the stage, it was even hotter. no breeze at all. But it was worth it to see Mike play so close. Then when Ed was throwing a banjo trying to get it to the guy in a wheelchair behind us, some A@@HOLE nearly gave my girlfriend a black eye trying to get the freaking material object. I really wanted to kick his A@@. Please people, those little trinkets are not worth hurting other people for, are they? I wish they would never throw things in the audience because of jerks like him.

I posted this last year on this date:

I finally got to see my favorite band of all time. After having bad luck for years (including being out of town when they were touring, having no money, and having my tix taken from me the day of a show) I managed to make it to Washington and see Pearl Jam play what was then the best show Ive ever seen (now I consider it 2nd to Hartford).

Gorge II. I'll never forget the opening to Severed Hand, the crowds thunderous chants during Animal, Eddie in the crowd, Little Wing with lyrics, and all my favorites from Vitalogy. Ive listened to the bootleg from this show a countless number of times since and remember the feeling I had that day every time.

After two years I'm finally ready to admit that I'm happy I had to wait all those years to see Pearl Jam play. It was such an incredible experience to fly to Seattle (after numerous flights were cancelled because of the terrible weather and then hitting major turbulence and seriously thinking the plane would crash) and then driving out to the Gorge. It was a long journey that was more than worth it when they took the stage.

Two years later and my bad luck continued- I wasnt able to back out of a family trip that would make me miss out on MSG and Camden. However I got back just in time for Hartford and got that feeling all over again.

Hopefully, there will be many more Pearl Jam shows to experience but I'll never take any for granted after that long wait for the Gorge.

Long, probably boring, story, but just wanted to mention it since it happened on this day.
