I brought this up earlier on another post and got bitched at (surprise, surprise), but maybe we could collectively agree to NOT download leaked/"free"/etc. files of this album or the singles. While it might be cool to do when you think you're making a political statement against the labels, the band is doing it label-less this time, and maybe they would appreciate having their fans actually pay for the albums they work hard on. I've been told by one poster that some PJ fans can't even afford the $0.99 for a single, or that they will buy the album as well, so what's the big deal? Another poster explained that PJ gets most of their money from touring and merchandise, so we shouldn't worry about the album downloads. It just seems that while you may be downloading out of sheer excitement for the new tracks (and trust me, I feel it, too), others who are downloading aren't doing it out of exuberant fandom. If they wanted us to have the album for free in July, they would have give us instructions on this. Screwing a band you love out of a few bucks (times however many fans participate in these downloads) is not a money saver, or a way of showing how much you like them (because you couldn't wait), or a way of hyping yourself up for their real moneymaker -- their tours. It's just a way of justifying pretty shady behavior to a band that hasn't been too shabby to their fans.
Oh, the quest for purity.
Given that I just spent over $80 a ticket to several of their shows, and plan to buy multiple-format versions of the album once it's released, I feel no drive or obligation to pretend that the album's not perfectly available for enjoyment upon leaking. For the absurd cost of their concert tickets (you hit it on the head with the 'moneymaker' comment - if their rate of inflation keeps up we'll be paying $150 a ticket in less than a decade), I'm having a hard time calling downloading a leak "shady behavior".
To be honest, after nearly two full decades of being a ridiculous superfan on every level imaginable, the return effort from the band is really starting to seem half-assed - especially when you look at the various other ways bands are reaching out to, interacting with and exciting their fans. A consistently disappointing and half-assed Christmas single 6 months too late, every time, very very little online interaction for a lot of expectation/hope that we'll support their causes, buy their super deluxe repackaged albums and singles with b-sides that are ON THE ALBUM, and spend every goddamn cent we have to go see them in concert now, where we're surrounded by a good selection of whining, entitlement-delusional elitist fans on the floor at shows who stub down all of their friends. That's not everyone in the pit, of course. There are some wonderful people there, and I've made many awesome friends there. But anyone defending/denying that there are a real group of traveling assholes in the "seniority" crew up front at most major shows is likely a member of it themselves.
I've loved Pearl Jam far more than any other musical entity in my life since the age of 13, but they're really just starting to seem.... old and out of touch. I hate to say this, believe me, but when I look at someone like Jack White, who's putting thought and energy into creating an innovative, rewarding experience for his fans, and then look at an out-of-touch, over-the-hill band riding icon status like the Rolling Stones, the PJ comparison inarguably falls to the latter and not the former.
Ok - there's the kindling. Here's a lighter. Go.
[edit - admittedly, that turned into kind of an off-topic rant. my apologies.]
If you google it, there seem to be a number of torrents but looking a bit more, it's not really... Lots of crap. Though amongst that crap there may be a 'real' one, but why take the risk of rubbish being dumped on your computer?

three reasons.
a) you have to know where to look, and more importantly, how to spot the fakes.
b) i have a mac. they're good at avoiding the computer STD's that pc's tend to succumb to.
