Backspacer Torrent

Question: If I already paid for Backspacer through pre-order and have bought tix for two shows already, will I get sued $1.7 million like that single mom in Minnesota if I download the torrent?

MODS and Intertube police: I have NOT downloaded the torrent.

No, but whoever you downloaded it from will, and if you make it available to anyone else, you will.

lol, i havent downloaded it so I dont know if its fake or not, but I have found a few sites that say they have it. A quick google search will lead you to plenty of links.

If some sites have already put up reviews, the album then exists out there. Right?

lol, I just relized that Kat has only posted around 500 times, and one of those is a reply to me. I sort of feel honored, but now I think Kat has special hacking abilities and is searching my computer for backspacer files.

I think promo copies are watermarked, which would make it difficult to leak the album.

And I have not read any reviews of the record.

That's where you are wrong. Sites that have reviews of the entire album were granted a special sneak preview through whichever means (with watermarked files embedded) making it easy to see who was responsible for the album leaking (aka "being out there")

Album leaks usually happen within the 3-4 weeks leading up to the release date. However, an album may leak a few months in advance, although in this day and age and with the distribution deals, it's getting rarer and rarer.

For instance, Yield leaked in December of 1997 (released Feb 3 1998)....
Binaural had some crappy quality tracks leak up until its release in May of 2000 (full album leaked maybe 2 or 3 weeks before)
Riot Act was released in November of 2002, and from what I remember lyrics of the album leaked through a fax to Sony headquarters in September, with the album leaking in october.
Lost Dogs was released november of 2003, and was leaked in EARLY September with some original rough mixes even before that!
Avocado was leaked just a few weeks before the album.

We've got just over 2 months to go, it hasn't leaked yet.

    Reality.

the torrent i saw had two .doc files with it that said "PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU TRY TO PLAY THE MP3" (or something like that). so, i downloaded those two files first and they both said that "in order to play the tracks" you needed to go to some no name website and register do a bunch of bullshit yada yada yada and then "you would be given a password to play the tracks". sounded like a scam to me so i didnt download the other files and just deleted it all

I brought this up earlier on another post and got bitched at (surprise, surprise), but maybe we could collectively agree to NOT download leaked/"free"/etc. files of this album or the singles. While it might be cool to do when you think you're making a political statement against the labels, the band is doing it label-less this time, and maybe they would appreciate having their fans actually pay for the albums they work hard on. I've been told by one poster that some PJ fans can't even afford the $0.99 for a single, or that they will buy the album as well, so what's the big deal? Another poster explained that PJ gets most of their money from touring and merchandise, so we shouldn't worry about the album downloads. It just seems that while you may be downloading out of sheer excitement for the new tracks (and trust me, I feel it, too), others who are downloading aren't doing it out of exuberant fandom. If they wanted us to have the album for free in July, they would have give us instructions on this. Screwing a band you love out of a few bucks (times however many fans participate in these downloads) is not a money saver, or a way of showing how much you like them (because you couldn't wait), or a way of hyping yourself up for their real moneymaker -- their tours. It's just a way of justifying pretty shady behavior to a band that hasn't been too shabby to their fans.

Guster leaked a counter-torrent of their album Keep It Together with the vocals removed and alternate vocals of their manager meowing the approximate melodies (the meow mixes, get it?). I downloaded them for fun and it was actually cool to hear them before the album came out. But I don't guess a band that harangues a blogger posting about a secret video taping is going to release a fun counter-leak. Or give in and stream the leaked album on their website. Or sell concert tickets in a way that makes it possible for me to get one after 2 1/2 hours of trying, unlike the bands that release fun counter-leaks and stream their leaked albums, both of which sold me concert tickets in less than 2 minutes.

Not only does that have nothing to do with the discussion, but your argument can hardly be called an "insult". After all, Achtung Baby is often considered their best album.
