I loathe the Red Sox. The Yankees for years ruled baseball in terms of arrogance, but at least they had the history to back it up. I didn't like them, but you had to respect them. The Red Sox win a pair of World Series rings after a 100 year drought or so and they act like God's gift to the game. Their fans are annoying as shit apologists, and their players have less class than any team I've watched this season. They've got the most obnoxious bandwagon fanbase of any sports team I ever heard of. Fuck the Sox.
and please explain how our players have less class?.. im intrigued
Beckett beaning people,
Do you have evidence of Beckett being a headhunter? Since 2007 Beckett has hit 17 guys. In just 2007, Verlander hit 19 guys in one season.
If you're going to talk about the Abreu thing, I hope you realize that Abreu and Beckett had a history back with the Marlins and Phillies respectively. Beckett owns Abreu - has held him to a .215 BA lifetime and has faced Abreu more than any other pitcher. Back in Philly and last year in NY Abreu started stepping out of the box at the last minute to throw off Beckett's timing and Beckett was sick of it and through one over his head. So you can't call an isolated situation means for calling someone a headhunter.
as much as the "typical Red Sox Fan" persona has been created ... so has the "typical Red Sox hater" persona ... man, the haters are out in full.
So, Youkilis is an excitable guy, is that really a bad thing? He's not showing up other players (well, maybe Joba, but that's a different issue involving an inordanate amount of beanings)
Hell, I can't name one person outside of Yankees fans that like Paul O'Neill ... but, Yanks fans ADORE that guy.
It's passion. Passion to excel, passion for the game ... passion to win.
Those are all good things, but the Sox go beyond that. To be fair, my biggest beef with the Tigers these days is an utter lack of passion and spirit. They are going through the motions so much it's sad. But that doesn't mean the other extreme is any better. Passion is one thing, picking a bunch of fights with umps and other players is another. I've never seen a team argue and whine and prance about like prima donnas as I saw when the Red Sox played the Tigers.
I'm still waiting for Soulsinging to identify what Terry Francona does to encourage outbursts.
I've no clue, but he sure as shit doesn't do anything to stop them. Jim Leyland kept Kenny Rogers and Gary Sheffield, two of baseball's most notorious whiners and shit-stirrers, from doing anything problematic during the entire time they were with the team. When your team is throwing regular tantrums, then I blame management for not coming down on the offenders and bringing them in line. That is their job as a coach/manager.
the ethos of their manager is to encourage it? Terry Francona? REALLY? What does Francona do to encourage outbursts?
Yankees conduct themselves with profesionalism? Joba DUI, Arod (nuf said), and there are a few whiners on that team ... I'm not singling out the Yankees, just stating your claim that the Ynakees are "professionals" doesn't always hold true.
Now I just think this is blind hatred (jealousy) for a winner here. Hatred of them being over exposed.
I'll grant you that overexposure could have a lot to do with it. But it has nothing to do with winning. I don't hate the Yankees for winning, or the Rays, or the Dodgers, or any other team that has won a lot in years past. It's not that they're winning, it's how they're winning. Act like you've been there before. I was as happy as anyone when they pulled off that dramatic, drought-breaking series win, but the team since then has gone to shit with their behavior on the field.
And no, I don't watch the Red Sox regularly. As I said, I base this on the games I saw them play against my team (the Tigers). I've seen the Tigers play just about every team in baseball now, and nobody has even come close to matching the Red Sox in terms of poor sportsmanship and lack of class. It didn't matter who was winning or losing... I've seen teams kick the shit out of the Tigers and had no problem with how they did it (see the Twins this past weekend). I've also seen teams get pounded by the Tigers and take it in stride. But only one team stood out in my memory as acting like a bunch of whiny, arrogant prima donnas and it was the Sox.
so, all of this is based on a few games against the Tigers ... not really a large sample size.
and i'm not sure how you're drawing all these conclusions about the fans.
No, it's not. But I think it's pretty telling that it made such an impression on me. I've been watching baseball since I was old enough to open my eyes, and I never saw anything that turned me off like the Red Sox players' behavior in that series. And no other team this season has come close to matching it.
The fans perception is a combo of 1) the overnight proliferation of Sox gear following their big win a few years back and 2) people around here that will defend the most absurd things becos they can't accept any criticism of their team. You tell me Sheffield was a douchebag, I'll agree with you. You say Verlander's kinda cocky, you're damn right. But try telling a Red Sox fan that Beckett was a dick for that beanball and charging the plate earlier this year, and they'll make excuses and rationalizations until they can't breathe anymore.

What kind of nonsense are you talking about. Manager Francona job along with all the other managers in MLB is to manage thei teamsr to wins, lots of them. Winning in a sense will cure many tantrums and frustrations. Any manager who is more worried or concerned about tantrums or blowups WON'T be managing very long.

Because Paul O'Neill was playing his best game while he was on our team, and helped us to many rings.

I just have to say, as someone who wrote half his dissertation on how much Red Sox fans can suck (though as has been mentioned this site isn't really the place to find the sucky ones), the fact that this thread exists gives me great pleasure. However, the part on the first page where someone suggested that Pedro had no class really pisses me off. As I told Solat about a year ago it was the management cocksucking Boston media that successfully got a large portion of RSN to turn on him - mostly because of his pro-Dominican (some might say anti-American) views dating back to his defense of Danny Almonte in 2001 that eventually led to him 'misbehaving' after that - and upon seeing that (he is my favorite baseball player ever) I decided to investigate it. Of course, it's no surprise to Sox fans that they are still considered to be the most racist fan base in the league, and it should come as no surprise that they may be the only team to field the KKK lineup (if you don't count the light-skinned Native American Ellsbury) against righthanders which, I'm sure, pleases the old guard who rooted for the team when they were called "the plantation" in the 80s and 90s to no end. Still, as jimed, solat, and others will argue it's a better fan base today than it was 15 years ago, it's just unfortunate that ESPN, the Boston Globe (full of racist white reporters), and that twit from the Bostondirtdogs website speak for the whole.
