    July 19, St. 15, Verbier

So it happened! All of the riders who hoped to win the Tour de France in Paris next Sunday came to the foot of the climb to Verbier in Switzerland together, and by the top just one was on his own saluting the crowd with his customary sign-off of imitating a pistol shot.

Alberto Contador did not win the Tour de France at the Swiss ski resort, but he has established himself as the race leader while, at the same time, becoming the undisputed leader of his team. He leads his Astana teammate Lance Armstrong by 1min 37sec and Britain's Bradley Wiggins by 1min 46sec.

After Monday's day of rest the race will resume in the Alps and the riders will have to work out how they can beat the slightly-built Contador who will now be able to count on his seven surviving team members for support.

On this 15th stage from Pontarlier a group of 10 riders dominated most of the day and for a long time Spain's Mikel Astarloza had recouped enough lost time to lead the race on the road.

Astana monitored the chase and closed everything down as the last five mile climb to the ski station began.

The riders hit the slopes so fast that a pecking order was quickly established. The leader for the last week, Rinaldo Nocentini, was among the first to crack and he was left behind to slip from first to sixth overall, losing 2min 36sec to Contador who had started the day just six seconds behind him.

Armstrong lacked the top end speed he had when he retired in 2005 yet, showing a grim determination he fought to finish ninth and moved up to hold second overall, just 97 seconds behind Contador.

"Yeah, I think I've lost the Tour, but we'll see." he said at the finish. However, with the six days that lie ahead, this race is far from over yet.

Why does Lance sound like he's setting bait trying to set some riders up????

    Peace

well ... based on the interview i saw right after the stage - i think he basically said he would ride for contador as he should ...

although the rest of the stages have been downright boring ... i love stages like the one yesterday ... love watching jens voigt just give er trying to crack everyone ... guys pushing the pace making people red zone ... then seeing someone like carlos sastre fight back to the lead group ... all heart ...

i think cadel is gonna drop out of the tour ... nice ride today from thor ... attacking on a mtn stage to win intermediate sprint points ... gutsy ... i had an inkling he would do that cuz he kinda dogged it yesterday ...

wow ... devastating ride today ... as soon as the shleck brothers learn to TT ... they will be a force to be reckoned with ... lance is strong but it's clear he doesn't have the high end stuff anymore ...

Superb riding in and out of the mountains today, Lance working hard to gain a podium spot with the Scleck brothers making a race of it. Which is exactly what they needed to do.

Contador showed what it takes to be a true champion of the Tour by putting down the hammer in the ITT.

    Interesting read this morning....

"LeMond, referring to the 8.5km climb at an average gradient of 7.5 per cent, wrote: "Never has a rider in the Tour climbed so fast. How do you explain such a performance? According to the last information published by former Festina trainer and specialist in performance Antoine Vayer in [the French newspaper] Liberation, the Spanish rider would have needed a VO2 max (consummation of oxygen) of 99.5 ml/mn/kg to produce such an effort.

"To my knowledge this figure has never been achieved by any athlete in any sport. It is a bit like if you took a nice Mercedes out of the car showroom, lined it up on a Formula 1 circuit and won the race. There is something that is wrong. It would be interesting to know what is under the bonnet."

..I’d be interested to see these ‘calculations’ … there’d have to be a lot of assumptions

But I agree with the concern – not so much based on climbing prowess but his ability to SMASH everyone in a flat-dominated TT
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

It seems G. Lemond is ALWAYS questioning riders who do something he couldn't come close to doing on the mountain rides. He did the same thing with Lance or he's just pissed his bikes aren't selling.

That's if they're still for sale, I haven't seen one in years.

MONT VENTOUX what a challenge and a podium spot for Lance. Like I said at the beginning he would be in the top 10 and a top 5 was possible but I certainly didn't think he could make it as far as he did.

There really wasn't as much drama as in past tours but just some great riding by some great riders that made it look way too easy. I thought there was more drama in the TT's than any of the mountain stages.

Basically ceremonial ride tomorrow and congrats to Alberto Contador, now can he win 5 Tours?

    Peace

My analogy for Ventoux.....crazy anticipation like I had for "The Fixer." Hugely underwhelmed, like I was for "The Fixer." :o

I was hoping the Schlecks were gonna blow that sucka UP!!!! Talented, but no more than the other contenders.

i would guess lots of $$$$ involved. a big thing for a sponser to go into when a lot of it is based in europe

What would say it would cost to start up a new team around 5-7 million $$$? That's around how much Radio Shack is ready to pay out in this economy, who still shops at Radio Shack???
