the lotto team will again be Evans downfall.... he is in the best shape of his career and 3 mons off the lead now due to others in his team. might be able to gain some time in the hills, but the others will not let him get too far away :?
this year's tour favours the climber's ... although evans is more than capable - he's not a guy that's gonna break too many people ... it'll take all his strength to hang on ... but you're right - on those key mountain stages - he'll be trying to hang on to the lead groups and if he cracks - he won't have anyone to bring him back ...
Poor Cadel I feel so sorry for him in that respect.

Today Contador showed who's boss in the mountains and has zoomed into 2nd place just ahead of Lance by 2 seconds. This may turn out to be a classic dual with Contador coming out on top.

Astana reminds me of the Yankees. It's like they're saying "WE want to win this thing" but the guys know there's an extra $10M to the MVP. Might work in baseball but it's got to cause friction in a race where few remember who came in second and who were good soldiers for #1. It may actually be a detriment that this team has so much talent. I don't think Lance or Contador are wired to be the "second banana." Very interesting.....

I can see how that could be cause you have to know Johan Bruyneel is STILL loyal to Lance and secretly wants him to win. So don't think Contador knows it.

LANCE Armstrong has finally admitted that tension exists in his Astana team as both he and Spanish teammate Alberto Contador bid to win the Tour de France.
Armstrong finished the ninth stage on Sunday still only eight seconds off the leading pace of Rinaldo Nocentini, an Italian riding for AG2R who is not considered a yellow jersey contender.
Contador, the 2007 champion who started as the yellow jersey favourite, was second overall only six seconds off the pace ahead of Monday's rest day and a crucial spell of racing towards the end of this week.
As their rivals look for ways to close deficits incurred in a thrilling first week, it seems the real battle for supremacy is taking place in one team.
Speculation has been rife since Armstrong joined Astana last year that he and Contador would end up duelling each other, and not their rivals, for the yellow jersey.
And although Astana have so far tried to play down talk of tension, Armstrong admitted on French television on Sunday: "The honest truth is that there's a little tension. Alberto is strong, and he's very ambitious.''
Cancer-survivor Armstrong won the race a record seven times in succession between 1999-2005 and is returning to the Tour after ending a threee-and-a-half-year retirement.
He said if 26-year-old Contador, who last year won the Tour of Italy and the Tour of Spain, proved his worth he would accept having to play second fiddle in the team.
"If he proves to be the strongest in the race, there's nothing I can do,'' added Armstrong. However, the 37-year-old, who has not ruled out a return to the Tour de France in 2010, has shown little evidence of only wanting to supprt Contador.
The American last week prompted some early race drama when he took advantage of a wind-aided echelon on the third stage to distance Contador, and many other rivals, by 41secs.
After the following day's team time trial, won by Astana, Armstrong moved up to second place overall, only 0.22sec off Fabian Cancellara's leading pace. But on the first day in the high mountains on Friday, Contador got his own back.
As Frenchman Brice Feillu raced to victory at Arcalis ski station, Contador attacked Armstrong's group to finish 19secs ahead of the American. It put the Spaniard into second place overall, and back in the spotlight.
Armstrong added that if Contador gave a repeat performace in the climbing stages of next week, he would have to abide by the team's rules - although they, for now, seem to be unfathomable.
"If that happens on the way to Verbier (on stage 15), there's nothing I can do about that. I have to follow the (team) rules,'' Armstrong added.
In theory that would mean Armstrong sitting back, as he did at Arcalis, and helping Contador by only attacking himself if their yellow jersey rivals made moves to counter the Spaniard.
Earlier however the American told reporters that a "very difficult'' six-day spell next week would show who deserved to be given the team's full support. "We'll have more moments, we'll see who's truly the strongest,'' said Armstrong.
He later added on television: "The Tour is only 25 percent done. Maybe we're halfway done, but in terms of selection (elimination) we're only 25 percent done.''
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

Not much change except for a easy win for sprinter Mark Cavendish, no radio communication which almost led to a strike by the riders. Lance siad it was the easiest ride he's ever had in the TDF.
On Stage 13 they will be no radio communication either which may lead to more attacks.

i don't think he gives contador the credit he deserved from those other grand tour wins ... he has barely had to work the first week and a half ... he will make most GC contenders crack starting monday - it will be interesting to see if armstrong can keep up ...
the one thing tho armstrong has over contador is probably more support from team mgmt ... i mean if armstrong attacks going into switzerland - is contador allowed to follow if the other GC guys don't?? ... say lance gets in yellow - it's very well likely that contador will be told he cannot attack and must protect yellow ... which would only leave him the TT to try and get back - something he's gotten better at ...
ultimately, i don't think the strongest will necessarily determine who wins - it'll be a political decision ...
Yeah thats always been my thoughts Polaris.....Im still convinced they are under instruction to ride for Cont.
I tell ya Im dying for the hills to start. The only stage I have missed was Andorra and that was the only one with a decent climb.
I did just have $150 on Peliazotti (sp) to win the polka dot
me and a buddy placed a $20 bet on frank shleck - big mistake as he's riding for his brother i think ...
we'll find out monday what's gonna happen - this could have been a real exciting tour if the organizers didn't mess up the mountain stages ... even today's stage with a cat 2 downhill finish is likely to not affect the GC standings ...
i just love seeing guys crack ... we'll start seeing that monday - it's too bad that these "sprinter stages" are putting minimal hurt on the climbers ...
and when is jens voigt gonna go for a long ride by himself this tour?
