Hossa to the 'Hawks (and other NHL free agent news)...

Well one of my most hated players may find his way back into my good graces now that he is on the second most exciting team to watch in hockey (and a 12-year deal? What a difference a year makes!). I personally have to thank Hossa for betraying the Pens because it appears we never would have won the Cup with him.

In other news the Sedin twins sign identical 5-year deals (do you think they get tired of that?) to stay in Vancouver, Guerin takes a discount to win another Cup, and Calgary signs Bouwmeester before he hits the market.

I know there are others but just starting with a few to get things going...

As a Blues fan, I like the signing of Ty Conklin. It appears his streak of playing in the Winter Classic will be coming to an end though.

Obviously the future can prove me wrong, but as a Blackhawks fan I am not excited about the Hossa deal. 12 years is so freaking long. I hope they are not handcuffing themselves on future moves. I kind of think that I'd prefer the oft-injured Havlat for a shorter amount of time.

    12 years?!?!?!

That's outrageous! I think that line of Hossa, Kane, and Toews is going to be unstoppable next year...but 12 years?!?!

What, is he going to be 50 by the time the contract is up?

    Either way, Go Hawks!

While I understand your POV, I'd say it wasn't really a betrayal :P
You picking him up at the TD and him going to Detroit were essentially exactly the same, but whatevs. I probably wouldn't like him if I was a Pens fan either.

Spacek to Montreal for 3 years - good signing seeing as we're losing our shotblocker/cockknocker and our defense is really weak even had we kept him.
I can't wait for the next five years to be overwith, lol!

I thought 12 years was crazy too when I first heard it. But I've been hearing on sports radio in Chicago that the contract is frontloaded with something ilke 58-59 million in the first 8 years. The last 4 years will be only about a million a year. Don't know how accurate that is, but it sounds right. Either way, I love the signing.

Well, he certainly wasn't a tried and true Pen, but I guess I consider it a slight betrayal in the fact that he claimed to love playing alongside Crosby yet really thought that he would have a better chance of winning the Cup with the team that had just beat them. Whatever the case is, it looks like he's finally wised up and doesn't want to keep team-hopping almost every year.

Yeah, the deals have to be strung out that long because of the limited cap space available. Detroit was looking at a similar length for a deal, but the could only average out at $4M a season.

Lucky for Detroit that they are still stacked to the rafters in talent. If it was between Franzen and Hossa, I'm glad they took the Mule because he is an immortal in the playoffs (except when he gets bonked in the head).

Oh, ok. That's not so bad I guess.
I initially thought "you gotta be f'n kidding me!?!?!"

I'm pretty excited about it too. That first line is going to put a TON of points next year!!!

Yeah, my initial thought was "12 fucking years?!?!?!??"

But yeah, there's going to be a ton of talent on the ice next year. I'm going to miss Havlat, but Hossa has been durable his whole career and is a much better two way player.

Gaborik to the Rags for 5 years, 7.5 a year. Depending on his health, could go either way.
    Habs got Gionta too.

    I am.

Gill is a decent player if he is used correctly... it took him a while to find that role in Pittsburgh, but once he did, he played well. But if Montreal expects him to be some shutdown top pairing guy, then he will massively disappoint.

That being said, $2.25 mil was overspending for him.

I think the disappointment comes from expecting some sort of offensive dynamo defensemen. He has good positioning at least, and that ought to help Price out a bit. Definitely overpaid, but who wasn't yesterday...

I'm not looking forward to seeing the inevitable signing of those two 'elsewhere'.

Saku is going to play with his brother in Minny.

Kovalev can't leave Montreal because the Russian mafia won't let him.

I agree that Saku is going to Minnesota, I hope they win the cup.

I'd like to see Kovy back but he'd have to take a pay cut and I don't see that happening.

How about those big Leaf signings? Do you get a point for most penalty minutes per game? :)

Where've you been? Brian Burke all over TV and you aren't doing any good reporting ;)
And I think Burke is lobbying for that to be the new replacement for an OT loss.
