Complaint or complainers board?

Just wondering if the mods, or whoever's in charge of this bitch fest, has ever considered starting a new board just for complaints?

I frequent a message board for a tv show that over time became loaded with complaining threads and really ruined what was supposed to be a forum for fans to discuss different twists and turns in the show. The mods, i think, created a whole separate forum/board for posts that could be an outlet for the frustrated.

I think most people come to these boards to enjoy discussion and debate about the music, and that seems to be pushed to the side. Could we not have a separate board for complaints? Why not?

  • Not a good idea, IMHO.

If it's a bad topic to be discussing, either smiting the band or what have you, the mod's will just lock it down and throw away the key.

If you want to complain, hit another PJ board up, you know? That's just my opinion.

Not sure you got my point. I feel there is too much complaining on this board. Specifically complaining about things that are more about the industry side of things. I find having a separate forum for the frustrated gives a proper space for those to point out problems they see. At the same time, keeping a space free that is focused on discussion of the bands music.

While I understand your feelings about the volume of complaining on this board there are valid points to be made regarding the announcement of upcoming shows. Do I think it's ridiculous when I see the same people whining and complaining about everything from tickets to posters to t-shirts, yeah it's out of line. However with the current tour situation I think people are rightfully upset. This is more impactful than say being shut out of a poster sale or not getting 10C tickets to one of the 5 shows you were trying for.

Complaining that they only played 1 song on Conan, or the speculation that the album is only 36 minutes long or that Ed played a private industry show is childish. Honestly I could care less if Ed wants to play a private show for money, for charity, for the hell of it...whatever. And I was happy to see they played a new song on Conan and don't really care how long the new CD is (as long as it's as good as Yield...dare I say better? :o ) It's just silly to bitch about essentially meaningless stuff (kinda like bitching about bitching ;) ).

But when you have a limited amount of vacation time and a limited amount of funds to spend on a vacation that you really want (a PJ show or two) you don't want to blow it all by putting in for it at work and paying non-refunable expenses for a non-PJ vacation and they find out their playing somewhere you now can't afford to go to, or right near your home while you're on vacation, or near the city where you're vacationing but the wrong week, etc. It's very frustrating when time and money are involved.

Things that truly have no impact on our lives (ie. posters, t-shirts, 36 minute CDs) aren't worth posting complaints about. However I think people do have a right to vent in light of the way the current "tour" is being announced.

We all love the band and we show it in the way we buy their music, posters, tshirts, towels, stickers, and on and on...and continue to attend their shows. So when we get irritated about things that truly are important I think we have a right to speak our minds.

BTW, if they created a whole forum for complaining no one would ever be on the Porch AND the album isn't out yet so there's not a heck of a lot to talk about right now except the upcoming shows. Just wait until ticket sales for the West Coast tour start, if there ever is one...or those rumored Philly shows which will be 100 times worse, especially if there are no NYC/MA shows to go along with them. Then you'll see some bitching ;) Not from me though, 'cause at least I'll no there are no shows for me this year...and I'll be ok with that :)

not easy to justify who is complaining and who is not.......

everybody is busy telling other people how to think on here these days.....

i'm becoming less annoyed by people complaining and more annoyed by people jumpin on that person for just voicing their opinion. In theory we are all doing the same thing?

No, I was talking about the whole forum in general.
Its a different atomosphere than before.

People are complaining about the stupidest things.
    I can't even read the 36mins thread.

OK, I hear you. I was gonna say come on, I come on here and complain once and people are going to jump on me? There are people on here that bitch about literally everything...a wise man once said "you can't please all of the people all of the time", but I swear around here you can't please some of these people any of the time. It makes you wonder why they're even fans of the band if they complain about everything they do :? :?

there are plenty of non-whiny members, we could have the "shut up" rule where if someone complains more than twice they get banned for a while. I think this would be perfect, whadda ya think admins?

I think this is the perfect solution for absolute obedience. Is that what you want? Any one who doesn't agree, can't speak? Think about that.
And I am not one for the constant complaining (although I will speak my mind from time to time), but when you take that right to free speech away...

Its not bout people agreeing with you its bout people complaining bout silly shit like posters or a cd that hasn't come out yet or why we haven't gotten a tweet. Its silly shit like that, that is pissing people off. This board has gone to fucking shit in the past months. All you see is people complaining bout things and not even talking bout the band.

It was like that on the old board too. The fact is, you can't stop people from what they do best: complain. I don't care for it either. But spending time complaining about the complaining is completely redundant. If you don't like it, simply don't read it.

its been like this since the days of the aol board but this is the worst I've ever seen. Least with the previous board you didn't have anyone with a 10c# complaining like you do here. Yes I agree with you this idea is silly and pointless. I def don't come around a lot like I used to cause of people complaining bout silly. This used to be a really great board but now its just a cluster fuck of 10c members. I long for the days of forums.pearljam.com. Least that board was actually a community.

I seem to enjoy the replies to really long posts, when they quote the long post, and write, "too long, didnt bother reading" etc

For some reason always found those ones, well, interesting.
Stars walk the red carpet because they're famous - I walk the toilet paper because im the shit.
  • I have no problem with people having a venue to share their thoughts or complaints and I can choose not to read them if I don't want to. The part that bothers me is when people are asking questions or sharing thoughts and the responses are voiced with a complete lack of respect. Those disrespectful comments are applied to the "whiny" threads just as much as they are applied to the threads about what you might consider "worthy". I don't think there has to be agreement on the issue or that people shouldn't respond with differing opinions. I think just asking people to respond politely or not respond at all would be enough to reduce the friction some fan club members are expressing.

So, do we ask what is the purpose of the fan club? Metsfan mentioned that it used to feel like a community. That would be a great thing to have with a fan club.... Not sure how we have a community when we disrespect each others opinions so frequently by responding in disrespectful ways. (I say "we" loosely as I recognize it's not the majority of people on this board).

Honestly, reading the postings that are hateful, rude, disrespectful, etc., makes me wonder how exactly I fit into this group. I don't think I'm like that at all.. yet, we share a passion for the same band/music? It's weird. I think just showing fellow PJ'ers respect and using our manners would be a positive move.

Notice: Any disrespectful responses to this message should be sent via PM to DreamOfAngels so as not to disturb the community environment of this board.

    valid point
but they will announce the tour when they are ready
if its that important to you just wait or go to a festival or one of the other shows
ever think that perhaps the band doesnt want people traveling or planning vacations around their shows?

I agree 100%. Speaking as a newbie to this board, the disrespect and rudness that I've experienced and witnessed can be disheartening. Bitching can have a purpose, rudeness to another person does not.

Not to speak for the original poster, but he isn't "complaining about the complaining." He's offering a solution. He's saying create another sub-board -- like Moving Train or AET or Given to Fly -- for people who want to wallow in a bitchfest.

You can go over there and bitch about tickets, and tour, and the length of the album, and how much "Got Some" sucks and how the band has sold out by signing on with Target. Go nuts.

That would free up the main board for more productive topics.

I happen to think it's a decent idea.

  • On one thread recently, I suggested creating the "Living Room" forum for those intimate discussions where people are sitting around drinking wine, speaking politely to those joining them in their living room, and using their indoor voices to debate. The Porch could be for the those that want to be more aggressive in their remarks (such as "fuck that bullshit!!"). Remember, mom always said "if you want to run around and yell and scream - go outside!".. or at least that's what I heard :)

I haven't spent much time in the other forums within the Pearl Jam's Music section, but the little time I have reviewed threads there, I saw a lot more discussion of topics.. Maybe we just need to migrate to the other forums that already exist? I'm not sure I truly understand the distinction of what topics should be on which one anyway.. Has anyone else noticed a difference between the Porch and othe other 2 forums in the Pearl Jam's Music section? Or have I just not read enough there to see the same thing?

Again, I think people should be able to speak their minds.. I think it's a difference in people in terms of what their goals and interests are on this board - or for me - what maturity level I'd like to encounter.
  • ok..fine..why don't we just make 2 areas...one for kiss asses and one for non-kiss asses..problem solved!
  • ok..fine..why don't we just make 2 areas...one for kiss asses and one for non-kiss asses..problem solved!

How would "kiss assess" and "non-kiss assess" resolve an issue with complaining/not complaining or rude/polite? I'm not following the logic. Clarification for the old and decrepit would be appreciated :D

you can't trust people to sort themselves out... the people are complaining think they have valid points (maybe they do... who knows, but they don't see their input as wasted space) and the people who are being rude just think they are being clever.
