Just my opinion...and I haven't heard his new record yet (and I do think Ben Harper is very talented)...but my initial response to this idea is....***BOOOORRRIIINNNGGG***. I'd rather see an up-and-coming/less-established band like TV on the Radio, Band of Horses, It's True, or Why?...but that's just me. I also wouldn't mind seeing Sonic Youth again...new album is GREAT! Ben Harper?....well, I might have been excited about that 10 years ago...

BH + R7 would be great... I'd be equally thrilled with the Drive-By Truckers too.

  • He is already playing ACL Fest same day as PJ, which means guaranteed Indifference played as an encore.

As far as a support act, I doubt he is interested. He can headline on his own and that means more $$$$$$!

Plus he's been there done that with PJ... Why tread backwards?

Because they're friends, with mutual respect for each other.

  • I hear ya, but they have their own following, similar fanbases I guess. I just see Haprer wanting to be the headling act and getting paid more $$$$. Plus he is a lot bigger in Europe than he is here.

eh... PJ has helped me find some new favorite bands over the years (MMJ, KOL - neither all that small or unknown but i may not have otherwise given them a fair chance)... i think they can do better than BH

i was thinking it would be cool to tour with AIC for the 20th anniversary (kindof like how NIN got back to their roots on their past tour with janes) but it seems like theyre gonna be busy doing their own thing

my top choices right now would be someone like the whigs or band of horses

Band of Horses would kick total ass...

If I were a betting man, I'd still bet on Ben Harper though...do they still have the same gaping hole in their schedule as PJ does for September? Doesn't seem coincidental if so...

oh i just meant that NIN got their start playing lolla with janes... and PJ got their start as mookie blaylock playing with AIC... nothing about similar sounds... bands usually look for something pretty different in an opening act anyway

this is not ben harper and the innocent criminals... this is ben with 3 white dudes and they fucking rock... album is flying under the radar... they are on a tour of smaller venues, i got to see one with about 700 people and it was awesome... however i dont think they could make more $ trying to headline a tour of smaller places, because they certaily could not fill 15,000 seat arena's night after night... opening for PJ is a hell of a way to build up the new band and get it out there for people... this is totally different then BHIC

as a support act in australia, i do not know how it would go.
Ben is big enough to to a multi city tour on his own, and sell it out without troubles.
As a support act, there might be a chance of only a few of his own shows

the 1 show he did in Sydney in April sold out in Minutes

that being said, i have said since i saw him earlier this year that he would be a great support act with relentless 7.

    Hope so too. :)
  • i dont know, ive seen him a bunch of times with the innocent criminals and id much rather see that. his style of singing live just doesnt blend with the rest of the band that well live (to me at least)

For those of you against this idea, you need to go out and listen to the new album because this would be one amazing concert with the new ben opening.

im not against the idea based on the quality of bens new album... definitely his best stuff ever

its just already been done... bens well established - not that PJ havent had experienced openers before like sonic youth and the buzzcocks... but i would rather see a young band get the opportunity... and i can discover something new that way

no more than duvall needs an opportunity with the new AIC... when you step into something thats already well established you inherit all that experience in a way... and based on the venues bens playing with this project he seems to be content with a new smaller scale... but like i said, im not totally opposed to this... just think theres better alternatives... it used to be that the opening band was always about giving a new band a shot at the bigtime, but these days everyones more worried about these big coheadlining tours to try to make as much $ as possible

People are sleeping on this album eh? It's pure rock and roll, bluesy and punchy. I was calling for this to happen before this new album came out. Love to see it happen. While there are some soft songs on this album, Ben rocks like no other album before it on some of these tracks.

it would mark the first time i have ever watched an entire set of a pearl jam opening band 8-)
  • I was really into Ben Harper years ago but have kinda fallen out of love with him over the past 5+ years, or last couple of albums. I still think it's cool and like some new stuff and the old stuff, but all in all I find him kinda, well, dull now. Don't flame me! I respect him just don't like him as much as I once did.

As for those earlier mentions of PJ touring with Alice in Chains...Please God no. AIC will not be AIC ever again. I just don't think bands that lose one really significant member can go on, really. I wish the guys would just play under a different name instead of using AIC.
