However many times I listen to The River from the outstanding Live 1975-85 3-disc tour, it sends shivers down my spine. The intro is amazing, how he tells the people not to cheer because he wasn't good enough for the army. Nebraska is also quality. For me that album, and The Rising are musts in any collection.
    :D Rock on!!!! :D
Seen Pearl Jam 4 times in London, once in Manchester, as well as an Eddie show at Hammersmith.

Like him or not, Bruce is our generation's Dylan,

Ok, I haven't listened to as much Bruce as I have Dylan, but not sure I see this at all. Dylan is considered by many to be one of the greatest american song writers/poets, ever...not sure that is exactly where Bruce measures up (not saying he can't put on a good show but come on!)

I really hate when people call him "Uncle Bruce". There's only one "Uncle" and that's Neil... Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Have a wonderful day.

So do I. In the words of Auntie Jacko, you are not alone. Except, I don't care for the Uncle Neil bit either.

The generation of people born after 1970 can relate to Bruce a little more than they can to Dylan - as far as my experiences/conversations/education goes. I am not knocking Dylan by any stretch and his footprint on music and his place in history of music is unquestioned. I hope my comment didn't come across as disrespectful. Dylan as well as Lennon & McCartney have to be ranked as songwriting "geniuses" and their contribution to music is beyond amazing. But my friend, you would be shortsighted not to put Bruce in the conversation. Simply by the musicians who not only came after him, but his peers as well as the people who came before him who hold Bruce in such high esteem would suggest his place in the musical/songwriting landscape is quite lofty.

A great conversation indeed, and I appreciate your retort. I absolutely love talking music with people and I am hopeful that more of Bruce's library gains it's way into your ears, heart and mind. You'll be quite grateful you made the attempt, I assure you.

For the record, I've seen Dylan a handful of times - even with the Dead a few moons ago, as well as solo at Toad's Place (CT)...great to see the man do his live thing, but personally I'd take a Boss show everyday and twice on Sundays...just my humblest opinion and taste.

One of the best quotes I have seen in respect to Bruce was from President Obama "I wanted to become President because I knew I couldn't be Bruce Springsteen" :)

Make it a great day, ok - and again, thanks for the comment!

    Peace!

not trying to start any shit or anything, but i was born pretty far after 1970 and i relate to pretty much all of dylan's catalog more than i do any of bruce's. and i love springsteen. see above.

i just think dylan is in a class above springsteen, above pearl jam, above even neil young and the beatles. i think dylan might be the most important american musician ever.

    just a thought.

    Thanks for the reply dpmay...
Bob has often referred to Bruce as his younger brother and is the reason Bruce loves Woody Guthrie to this day...really, the similarities between the both men's careers is astounding (activists, political, social & literary influences) - Bruce grew up loving Bob - John Hammond was a record producer who kinda put them (along w/ Stevie Ray Vaughn amongst others) on the map and Bruce was the one who inducted Bob into the Rock n Roll HOF...Bruce has gone on record saying it it weren't for Bob, he might not have been a rocker, poet, activist, singer-songwriter, etc...
Bob's biggest impact - outside of genius songwriter - occurred as an anti-Vietnam activist and Civil Rights supporter - in the 1960's (really 63-69)...so with all due respect, I'm intrigued how if you were born "well after 1970" how 60's Dylan resonates with you especially as Dylan turns 70 in May of next year...Bruce 60 in September...but to each his own my friend and I easily agree that Dylan is in a class of his own, for sure...and certainly one of the most important songwriters of all time (not so sure about musician :))

    Peace!

    it was incredible.
