Uncle Bruce Springsteen Question

...always liked the Boss but other than his Greatest Hits Album...haven't listened to all that much. Please give me a roadmap on how to properly get into his music (i.e. essential live albums, is recent stuff good?, etc.)

-Nebraska

Obviously, you'll spend some dough grabbing this stuff - but it is a true road map of the Boss' career. "Greetings" starts it all off with the amazing lyrics - Born to Run, well BTR is one of the greatest albums EVER (my opinion) - most artists would kill to write a song like Thunder Road, Born to Run, Backstreets, Tenth Avenue Freezeout in their CAREERS let alone on one album! Live 75-85 shows the chops of the E Street band and some album classics from The River, Darkness on the Edge of Town, BTR, Born in The USA, etc... - which translate unbelievably well live. Tunnel of Love was a turning point in Bruce's life - especially love life and is different than anything he really had ever done up to that point. Nebraska is as dark as it gets and as amazing as you can imagine. Magic, a great political album -far moreso than The Rising or Working on A Dream (recent ones which are great as well)...
HUGE Boss fan here - seen him live bunches and his live show (every time I've seen him it's over 3.5 hrs!!!)is as good as it gets...
Like him or not, Bruce is our generation's Dylan, only a better listen (in my opinion again)...listen to those albums and you'll see the influence he had on Ed as well...some great youtube vids of Ed getting to play with Bruce (No Surrender, Darkness on the Edge of Town)as well as Bruce doing BetterMan which, well we should leave it to Ed :)but a humble attempt on Bruce's part...
Awesome to see other bands fondness of Bruce as well (Killers, REM, U2, Wyclef Jean, MJ -rip-, etc...)
Enjoy the Bruce experience. Enjoy listening to him change, grow and really make music that will still be amazing generations from now. The guy is on the Mt. Rushmore of music icons (again, in my opinion) - and is a major influence of countless bands today.
Peace, love & PJ

Last I checked ... a person can have more than one uncle. It's a big family. Lighten up.

I recommend the Cleveland Agora show (8/19/1978)...great sound quality and mind blowing show. Listen to the whole show, but specifically Growin' Up->Backstreets->Rosalita...that ought to do the trick as far as getting into Bruce

I guess since you said so, we should all comply. How about we all lay off the fucking "uncle" stuff anyway. Uncle Neil. Uncle Bruce. Uncle Pete. Uncle Roger. It's all really kind of dumb. Besides, we've all got one crazy uncle that is truly a perv.
Springsteen is great though. Born to Run is classic, but I lean harder towards Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River

pick up Born To Run as soon as possible
From there, as a beginner, you should check out Darkness and BIUSA. Tunnel of Love is a personal favorite of mine as well. After that, I'd go to some of the earlier stuff like WEISS and more recently The Rising.
I would also echo the suggestion that you seek out of some of the higher quality bootlegs. I would start with either Winterland (12/15/78) or the Capitol Theater (9/21/78). Both were radio broadcasts and are out there in wide circulation. I'd also seek out the Hartford May 8, 2000 IEM/Aud tape from the reunion tour. Not only is it one of the best tapes you'll ever hear, that is widely regarded as the best show of the past 25 years and I can personally say it was the best show I've ever seen.
To be fair, Ed refers to him as that a LOT. Like all the time. Like, that's practically his name.
This is a stupid argument anyway. Who gives a hell, reallY?

Well no its not, gotta be Born to Run, one of the all time great rock albums. Everybody knows Born to Run and Thunder Road, but Backstreets and Jungleland are killer.
After this one i would suggest jumping into its follow up, Darkness on the Edge of Town. Followed by Born in the USA, The Rising and Magic the the 75-85 live compilation.
Once you get a good feel for the E Street band stuff, then venture into his equally incredible solo territory....Nebraska, Tunnel of Love (basically solo...), and the underrated Devils & Dust.
Then go back to where it all began....Greetings from Asbury Park followed by The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. The River to me has always been hit or miss but the good stuff is very good.
Personally i've never really been a fan of his early 90s stuff (Human Touch/Lucky Town) and his 90s solo effort The Ghost of Tom Joad. I also think his latest is somewhat sub par (Working on a Dream), although the song "The Wrestler" is absolutely beautiful.
Oh and don't forget the B-sides compilation "Tracks"...lots of hidden gems on that one!

and can you all believe i was once in a room of about thirty seemingly-intelligent people and i was the only one who believed springsteen is superior to billy joel? i was flabbergasted to be such a small minority...
welcome.
Funny, anytime i post anything on The Porch about The Boss , if not directly related to eddie and or pearl jam , its gets deleted and or moved. ( See here )
I have seen Bruce too many times to mention or gloat ,
( i'm trying to get as many shows to ed/ pearl jam but naturally geography dictates otherwise )
anyhow- thats for another thread.
I've only met Bruce once , and those few moments and the brief conversation(s) we had could easily make one see he is the most genuine and down to earth , overall pleasant guy.
Ed has referred to Bruce as " Uncle Bruce " many times- definitely more than once .
It should also be noted that they developed a very close and personal relationship in the not so distant past .
Seems Bruce helped Ed out with a few issues in his personal life . I'm not sure what magazine I read all of this in ( may have been RS, Spin or possibly UNCUT ) , but it also mentioned them being on a rooftop in NYC sometime ago ( i think there may have been some Tequila involved ) as they watched the sunrise they got down into some very deep , personal and trying issues for the younger Vedder. Seems Bruce may have helped him in one way or another, if Ed has the compulsion to call him uncle , then go right ahead , he probably has every right to ; ( likely Bruce is honored and humbled as well )
Afterall , doesnt everyone feel like he could be our Uncle , too ?
The only difference is with Ed its probably more true to form and less fantasy .
