Nope not until they drop the requirement to have a certain priced data plan which adds hundreds of dollars over the 2 year contract.

But you really do NEED that data plan anyway.

Let's face it, if you want a phone to talk on and send text messages only, then don't get an iPhone.

I use my iPhone much, much, much more as a computer to surf the web and do other really cool things using the apps which require data than I do using it as a phone.

Of course, I guess if you'd only use it under a wi-fi network then you wouldn't pull the data but it's pretty hard to be on wi-fi when you're driving and looking up directions, using the gps and the maps, etc.

Thats true...I always see all these apps and people using the phone for everything nowadays

How's the battery life on those ?

The problem is that AT&T offers an unlimited data and message plan for $30 but if you have an iPhone you MUST purchase a $30 data plan (which cannot be dropped at any point) and then add a messaging plan. To me, that adds an extra cost which is not necessary.

I think i read Apple and AT&T signed another contract to stay exclusive

Kind of surprises me when you think of all the people that would get the iPhone on other networks

    Thats a good question

I dropped AT&T when we would go to the In-laws house in the Poconos in Pa and couldn't get a signal

And when they would rather drop me as a customer then just let me get a new phone like 3 months early

I have a Blackberry for work and a regular ol' flip phone for personal use. Between the two, my mobile communications are pretty much covered.

And no, I don't need "Aps".

True, but there are apps and IMs that offer ways around the text messaging so you could go with a $5 plan.

The 1500 text messaging plan costs $15 and the 200 costs $5.

Trust me. You need the Apps. You just don't know it yet.

They let it do all kinds of incredible things.

I've been thinking about the whole situation a lot.

Right now I have t-mobile. For the most part it works where I need it to and it's cheap. I pay $60 a month after taxes for 1000 min, free nights weekends, free mobile to mobile, and 1000 texts. My contract is up in 2 weeks and I need a new phone as I'm using a cheap replacement now.

I've been looking at the Blackberry Bold lately. I have to work on blackberries at work since I'm in IT, but I don't need it for work. I like physical keyboards and it would be nice to learn the blackberry interface inside and out.

Then there is the new iphone 3gs. My ipod crapped out about 5 months ago and I've been using a shuffle in the time being. So I'm on the market for a new ipod and a new phone at the same time. I like how the new Zune looks, but that doesn't come out until the fall. Makes sense to get the new iphone. I prefer the iphone browser to all other smartphone browsers I've used. The app store is great ( BB has one too now)

So for practical use I just need an easy to use phone and an MP3 player. I think it makes sense for me to get the new Iphone.

    wtf is tethering?

i am thinking about getting one. i currently have verizon, but my contract is up. i get shit service with verizon and it is expensive. i pay $90 including tax for 900 minutes and 1000 texts.

someone tell me more about getting around the texting, making it doable to use the 200 text plan for $5.

If you're someone who's using more than 1000 texts a month then you probably won't get around it. If you're closer to 300-400, then you can probably use the Instant Messaging capability or some of the free text apps they have out there - you basically use the app to send a text to start conversations and if someone sends a text to your regular number to start a conversation, use the app to reply. Some of them are pretty cool in that they can start group conversations.

If you're getting a lot of twitter texts, then you just use one of the twitter apps.

i don't think it will in a week. i am pretty sure people have been tethering "jailbroken" iphones for a while though i am not 100% sure.

got this quote from the apple description about the new iphone features!

    4. Tethering is not currently offered in the U.S. and some other countries. See your carrier for availability.
