    srv, jimi and page
    are all fantastic

once you reach that level its a matter of style preference

thing is hendrix was first and his playing more varied than either page or srv

page has always been my personal fav though

SRV was one of the most amazing artists ever...his music opened up a whole new world for me....Life by the Drop had a huge influence on me too, as simple as it is!

Isn't Mike McCready a huge fan and isn't SRV a major influence on him?
    Think I read that somewhere.

I would have loved to see Stevie write more structured "songs." In my eyes, he's awesome-- played flawlessly, incredibly capable, and had a very distinguishable tone. But the guy played too much blues for me to really love him. Imagine what amazing music he could have made if he stepped outside that genre a bit more. Hendrix really wrote some beautiful songs, and didn't limit himself so much. I'll take Hendrix over Stevie on an overall assessment. Could Stevie do everything Jimi did if we wanted to? Probably. Could he have come up with it on his own? I guess we'll never know.

it's a good observation and for sure both died way before their time...same as lennon. guess we're just lucky to have what we got :)
  • I love this quote by Eric Clapton about him...

"I don't think anyone has commanded my respect more, to this day. The first time I heard Stevie Ray, I thought, "Whoever this is, he is going to shake the world". I was in my car and I remember thinking, I have to find out, before the day is over, who that guitar player is. That doesn't happen to me very often, that I get that way about listening to music. I mean, about three or four times in my life I've felt that way, in a car, listening to the radio, where I've stopped the car, pulled over, listened, and thought, I've got to find out before the end of the day, not, you know, sooner or later, but I have to know NOW who that is....and I remember being fascinated by the fact that he never, ever seemed to be... lost in any way. It was as though he never took a breather... or took a pause to think where he was gonna go next, it just flowed out of him. He seemed to be an open channel and music just flowed out. It's going to be a long time before anyone that brilliant will come along again."
    My whole life
    was like a picture
    of a sunny day

With the exception of the above quote, I can't believe no one mentioned Eric Clapton while arguing who is a better guitarist. What's also crazy is that SRV took Clapton's seat in the helicopter.

Not going to get into the "Who's Better" debate but each had different qualities that made them all great. You can listen to the radio today and hear certain sounds and pick out the SRV, Jimi, and Page influences.

SRV's main influence was the blues obviously, he loved Jimi and paid homage by covering some of his tunes, as all blues artists have done. One of my favorite SRV albums is "In Session by Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. They trade licks on Albert's tunes and then Mr. King lets SRV tear into one of his songs. Stevie is so humble on this recording and pays his respects to a blues legend, then Albert sort of passes the torch to Stevie.

It is a shame that Stevie was taken away from us at a young age, especially since he was just turning his life around and really enjoying playing again. I would trade my soul for just an ounce of Stevie's ability, especially since I have none.... ;)

He's better than Jimi; Jimi's overrated

I love Jimi, don't get me wrong...but I'd have to agree on this...my personal opinion...I think Jimi Hendrix was a bit sloppy...but that doesn't make him a shitty musician...I just find SRV's playing to be more clear and precise. I do believe that they both played with the same amounts of soul though.

My dad was fortunate enough to see SRV on his last tour, about a month before he died in that unfortunate helicopter crash

for the most part i agree with you. I too have always said the Jimi was sloppy. and as a musician i think SRV was better than Jimi. but ....... i like to listen to Jimi more. does that make sense ?
    Peace, Love.

  • Without Hendrix, there would be no Stevie Ray.

And I love Stevie Ray. Saw him once in Austin and have his records. But his sound owes a lot to the great Jimi. I am old enough to have been around when Hendrix hit the scene, and the general reaction was that no one had heard anything quite like it before. What a loss. Imagine what he might have done with 10 or 20 more years.

SRV's brother Jimmy ain't bad on guitar either.

    And then there's John McLaughlin....

Led Zeppelin's music has 10x the scope of Hendrix and SRV combined.

Yes, but we're talking about musicians, not bands. Page may have had a better band, but SRV could have eaten him alive with sheer skill. Songwriting and playing ability are two totally different things.
  • SRV is flat out amazing, and for that matter, so is his bass player Tommy Shannon.

SRV is just extreme at what he did. And is flat out my favorite guitarist. Mr. Hendrix was also his idle.

I'm also a huge SRV fan. If you don't know of him already, Joe Bonamassa is another guitar player you might like. I've seen him live a few times and I swear this dude is from another planet. He's only in his early thirties, but he definitely fills at least a little bit of the void for us since Stevie is gone. IMO
