Thoughts from target workers?

I work at Target and have just a few things to say about the company. I am not management just a backroom guy so I don't have any inside info, just observations.

I have noticed target makes a real effort to be diverse. Not only the easy stuff like hiring people from many backgrounds. Target has a strong relationship with the Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, and Transgender Alliance. They also allow workers to have visible tattoos and piercings.

Over the last year and a half target has made a valid attempt to go green. The best example is the new policy on moving product from the district warehouse to the stores. In the past trucks would make a delivery 5 days a week no matter how full the truck was. The new policy only allows full trucks to be delivered, so if the automatic orders don't fill the truck it sits until its full. This cuts down one or two long round trip semi truck drives per week. Saves a ton gas and carbon emissions.

Target is also heavily involved with the united way and other local charities.

That said. Pearl Jam doing an ad for target still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

  • Meh. It's a bit of a corporate dick suck but in the end, they still have to promote themselves and sell their records.

They have to be on Conan, have a video game, play live, sell bootleges of every show...

Let's not forget that they decided to allow the music to speak for itself without videos... that means the biggest marketing tool for bands is gone... MTV doesn't touch them, nor does VH1... This isn't 1992 anymore, Pearl Jam is now an 18 year-old band.

If doing a commercial for Target (and you admit it's a pretty forward-thinking company) is a way to stay in the public consciousness and sell records so they can keep MAKING records.. I'm fine with that.

I would think the ad they did is for the ALBUM for sale at Target not Pearl Jam promoting Target...

I work at Target too (right now, and I hang my head in shame as I hate retail). The business is not my cup of tea. Anyhow, my Target store is pretty ghetto from my perspective, just gross. I will be suprised if they have the new pj cd honestly. I'm lucky they had the ITW soundtrack, (they had like 4 copies) and yet the cd has not been seen in there since around it's release. The Target I work at didn't even have Ten (reissue on day of release) WTF? This is what makes me think they will have 0-4 copies of the new album.

I don't mind corporation sponsorship through a particu;ar store. With Piracy the way it is, it makes sense. Only selling at 1 retail store will draw a bigger sales number, however all retail chains will carry it eventually. It's nothing but a Marketing ploy with a particular retail outlet. My friend told me he saw "Black Ice" by AC/DC at Best Buy and when first released, was only released through walmart. Which leads me to believe, that it's a ploy to not only increase sales through a particular retail outlet, but the band will make more money (suposedly) if only distributed through a particular retailer for a bit.
Truth be told burning cds and piracy killed the album sales, sad but true. Bands have to do what they feel is best given the direction slaes have taken due to technology advancing.

It's not like you're hearing a Pearl Jam song in the ads for the NBA Playoffs (ala Kanye West - "Amazing"). Well, come to think of it, I wouldn't mind hearing a PJ song for the Finals (Disneyland vs. Disney World...Lakers against Orlando).

this is still being sent to indie stores, and isn't it a good thing seeing this album just in target, and not wal-mart and all the other big boxes???

Used to work as a cashier at tarjet. They really are not as bad as people think. At least if you buy it from there they will be giving some kind of xtra promo for sure. It should be a klausen or ames print so people go ape shit and line up at targets haha.

Well should all be happy the members of Pearl Jam and their families are getting paid for all their hard work and support. Their music means a lot to me and Im glad they are getting paid.
  • are we really discussing working at Target? I would be embarassed to claim that on my resume, granted we all need to make a buck but this is senseless.

Target rocks. Especially considering the way they run their Co in comparision to their competition (i.e. the evil Walmart empire). Thank God PJ didn't sign up for anything to do with Walmart. I would have vomited.

I have noticed that, as well. Glad to know I'm not the only one checking out the talent at Target. Get some pretty goodlooking M.I.L.F.'s in there, too. Little more high class M.I.L.F. than KMART or Wal-Mart. M.I.L.F's at KMART or Wal-Mart look like they been on the crystal-meth pipe.

If it put food on the table and the paid the bills, I wouldnt call it senseless! I have a pretty good job and some stability, but if I were to lose that, and Target...Wallmart or fucking Mcdonalds had a place for me that would help me to keep my house or eat, I am on board. Dumbest thing I have read all morning, and I have been here 2 mins!

i'm thinkin the same thing. they almost always have some kind of "special edition" nonsense with their dvds/cds that are exclusively sold or promoted there.
  • It's a good move. Better than Wal-Mart or Best-Buy. The band has more freedom with distribution to indie stores and remember that this shit doesn't pay for itself. They have no label now so they have to pay for manufacturing the cds, distribution and promotion out of there own pocket. This sponsorship/exclusive contract is paying for al of this. This band does so much for it's fans. I cannot believe how people chime the lame statement hat the band is selling out. Just my 2 cents. :D

Maybe not. But they do keep the policy in place even if the truck is full of sale items late in the week. This past week they did not send a truck Saturday even though it was full of crap that was no longer going to be on sale the next day. Target makes most of its money on sale items.

And Im glad the promo stuff was brought up. I end up tossing most of that sort of stuff out, so Im sure I could walk out with a lot of it.

So would you say you've got some if we need it?
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
  • It's very true that they no longer have a label and aren't going to be able to just have their records appear on the front racks of every record store in high quantities.

Pearl Jam has always been able to walk the line between giving to the fans while still managing to make money. Those tour busses don't drive themselves, you know.

They saw many of us fans spending $40+ on awful bootleg recordings of their live shows and instead gave us much higher quality, lower price bootlegs to buy and still managed to get paid. We all won.

With this deal at Target, they'll get their CDs into every area... not just major cities with record stores but rural areas that only have stores like Target. They'll get national distribution, they'll get promotion on network television, they can probably get a single played on the radio.

Better distribution means more sales which means more new fans meaning bigger venues and more tour dates in smaller cities.

    We all win again.

Lmao! I’m picturing Ed’s head on the floor now……….
