Sometimes these claims have validity but this is a pretty big stretch. There are stylistic similarities but I don't see how you can call this a clear ripoff.
Like Ed's ripoff of that French song for the guitar for Guaranteed... THAT'S clear. This is most certainly not.
Can someone tell me what song you are talking about for Guaranteed? I never heard this before
So what ,when i listen to this song specially live i won't be thinkin of Devo why because i never listened to Devo enough to remember any of their songs  wtf ...
I don't see a resimblance at all. The older Pearl Jam gets, the better and more original they sound. I'd like to see someone try to "rip off" McCready's sound.
I was totally amazed at "got some" last night. I have watched it about a dozen more times today!
Take your crap to Devo's forum. The song is in a major key which would be D major. How many songs do you think in Western music in the last 50 years have been in the same key. Sure the chord progression might be the same but it means nothing. For as ripping off other artist, everyone samples everyone elses style. It's called being influenced. I think if Pearl Jam did sample a Devo song, then Devo should be honored. I listened to the Devo song and "Get Some" blows Devo out of the water. I think the song is great, Pearl Jam still kicks ass, and I am looking forward to seeing them for the 40th time. Peace-Love-Pearl Jam
Allan Cross did a show on a topic like this a while back. It's definitely worth looking up if you get a chance. He compares a lot of songs by other bands, and he goes through some cases that actually ended up in lawsuits.
Some of them are:
Offspring/Beatles
Chillie Peppers/Tom Petty
Nickleback/Nickleback
A lot of pearl jam songs have been influenced by others:
Bushleaguer - I believe in Miracles
Ledbetter - Little Wing
Given To Fly - Goin' to Callifornia
I Got Shit - Cinamon Girl
Got Some - That Devo Song?
Footsteps - Times of Trouble (doesn't really count)
For some reason I feel like this list is missing something, but I can't put my finger on it???
the problem i have with the whole 'devo rip-off' thing is why would PJ choose to go out and perform a song 'they knew' they ripped off on a show they knew would have a massave audience?
i can just see the conversation now...
ed: any ideas what we can play for conan?
mike: what about that devo song we ripped off?
matt: yea, i kinda like that idea. i show that i still have talent in that one.
ed: ummmmm, yea...but we have all these other songs that we didn't rip-off. why not try to be original, it's mostly worked for us so far.
jeff: fuck it. i love drama. let's play the devo song.
stone: whatever. i'm combing my hair.

nice connection. old devo rocks and so does this PJ song. at least they are getting their influences from great bands....................Life Aquatic Baby!
Now .... check out Russell Crowe as John Nash in a Beautiful Mind .... at the 1:10 of this clip ... (sorry for the Sting music, it was the only clip I could find of this video)
No guitarist in this world who has wrote a riff since 1969 can't say that Tony Iommi didnt write it first, there is only so many notes in the musical spectrum.

All the members of Pearl Jam are huge music fans and listen to a wide variety of bands -so it's only natural that some of their influences are going to seep into the music- This is hardly new to Rock Music as I'm sure you know.
Just ask The Rolling Stones how much of their early stuff was copped direclty from Chuck Berry.
Anyways, I seem to recall Eddie wearing a DEVO T-shirt at that David Lynch thing a while back. It's totally within the realm of possibility that Vedder was listening to alot of DEVO around the time when "Got Some" was written.
The chorus of "Gut Feeling" and "Got Some" are definately similar. But other than that the songs are totally different. More of a gracious nod to DEVO than a direct ripoff.
I don't think Pearl Jam has to worry about Mark Mothersbaugh and DEVO suing them.
Either way, both are great songs. "Got Some" has really grown on me over the last few days. I think with a better version/better mix this could be a really great rocker on the album and live.
BTW...Don't knock DEVO. They were an AWESOME band; especially the early stuff.
"Whip It" was obviously their biggest song, but it was not at all representative of the band and their fantastic body of work.
Imagine if Pearl Jam's biggest hit was "Bugs".
Pretty fustrating for DEVO if you really stop and think about it.
Don't forget that Matt has covered Devo before (with Soundgarden)
Where can I get that on CD?
The song is on the second disk of the ltd edition release of Badmotorfinger put out in '92. You can read about it here: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wcfixqu5ldke. More recently it was put out on a various artist covers compilation called "Rock Ya Covers Off" put out by Sony/BMG. By the looks of the lineup on that covers album though, you're better off not ever hearing the song again than paying $ for the 1/6th of it that would be worth hearing. "A lot more people are capable of being big out there that just don't give themselves a chance." -Stone Gossard
Last night my girlfriend watched my DVR of Conan and said "that Pearl Jam song sounds just like a Devo song I know".
She's not a particular fan of PJ. Doesn't want to go to shows with me or anything (except EV). I just thought it was funny that there was a Devo thread yesterday and people saying "it's nothing like it" then last night from a "neutral person" to say it makes it all the more true.

I understand this is a hardcore fan site, and fans of their favorite band are unwilling to compromise or allow that something seemingly negative about their band can not be true or plausible. They'll say the discussions about the similarities between Got Some and Gut Feeling taking place all over the Internet are madeup discussions.

It's impossible not to be influenced by bands when playing rock music. Some songs will be more obvious than others. I guess the question that is on the table is did PJ "rip off" Devo, or is their song just "kinda similar".

The "if ya need it" and "gut feeling" phrasing in the choruses is extremely similar. The rest of the songs, not so much. I don't think that qualifies as ripping Devo off.

wouldn't say its a ripoff, but they do sound similar for that moment. Doubt there is any connection.
There is a clear difference -the Devo song sucked, and PJs was good.
