Anyone hurt when the floating tea light fell in the crowd?

I watched the thing go up about 50 feet from me. It got batted around in the wind for a while, then get stuck under the alpine roof, then came crashing down in the crowd. Shortly after, some guy (I'm assuming the guy who launched it) went charging up the hill and security was there soon after trying to find him.

The whole thing was very un-Tangled-like. (sorry you won't get that reference unless you have a small child who likes Disney movies)

Don't think so but I'm not 100% sure. It landed right on a lady sitting next to me. She was stunned for a while and thought she might have hurt her nose (she happened to be breathing in right as all those ambers were flying around. I didn't even see what happened until it was on the ground. Props to the guy in row EE who stomped the fire out. By the time security got there it was out. Her and her family stayed for the rest of the show, so I'm thinking she is okay.

Where were the lanterns from anyway?

Glad the dumbass didn't set the place on fire. When it was trapped under the roof, I thought for sure the thing was going to start to smolder. That would be harder then hell to get a fire crew down there with 30k people.

I just re-read the first post. Some guy launched a lit lantern? What an idiot.

I drove by the night one tea light out in the country after the show on Saturday. It was still going, slowly making it's way east and north, threatening to come down and start some farmer's barn on fire. Awesome job, tea light guy.

Yes, a Chinese floating lantern. If I'm remembering correctly, I believe the first one was let go during Given to Fly and pretty close to the lyrics, "see a strange spot in the sky". It was sort of cool with the song but sort of stupid releasing something on fire into a wooded area. Probably no big deal because it had rained the day before so nothing was dry.

The second came up during TOTD. It was released much closer to the theater and the wind blew it right under the ampitheater roof where it sat for a bit. It then got turned sideways letting out all the heated air, caught the wind again, and tumbled into the seats.

  • Thanks Suziemay for the update.

Many of us watched it as it floated under the pavilion and were stunned, hoping that it wouldn't catch fire and find its way out of harms way.

Not a wise move ... I do recall these are usually set over water ... for very good reason! :)

Plenty of these were released at a Phish festival I went to recently - not sure how much sense it makes at a permanent and roofed structure though, unless you were far back enough in the lawn.

  • I was in row v v. That thing was on a bee line for us... Was totally fucking scary! When it was on the roof, all I kept on thinking was how would all of these people get the hell out of there if the building caught fire.

Glad no one was hurt. For some reason I was looking back from 103 H when that happened and I was absolutely STUNNED that somebody would be that insanely stupid to pull a stunt like that.

Actually, it was totally the dude in 203 EE who was all over it. He was stomping on the fire to put it out while most of us were just dumbstruck and concerned about the woman that the thing landed on. By the time security came the fire had been put out, so thank you whoever you are if you're on this board.

I was wondering what that thing was...I was on the lawn and saw what looked like a balloon with a candle in it floating away...

There was more than 2 released? I saw one during Nothingman and the one that almost set the place on fire.

The one during Nothing Man at the "into the sun" was fucking cool, dangerous or not. Dumb, but at least it seemed like they put some thought into which way the wind was blowing.

The other one was just dumb as fuck. The culprit couldn't have been more than a few deep on the lawn. And it was pretty breezy. Where the hell did he expect it to go?

As many wires and stuff as it was close to, I'm surprised it didn't shut anything down.

I was pretty relieved when it came down and there didn't seem to be too much of a ruckus.

I was sitting in Row SS of Section 203 and watching that directly over my shoulder (last row under cover was TT) with something approaching terror. First, it looked like it would flip over and light the wooden underside of the pavilion. Then, when it started sinking, the lit bottom hit the guide wire, and again I had a momentary fear that the whole thing would go up. Then it rapidly descended and the flame appeared to land directly on someone's head. More than a little scary all the way around.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

Wow. I had no idea this was all going on behind me. I have to Google this thing to see what it is, I've never heard of floating tea lights.

We were in 203, row U, so probably far enough in that we would have had to turn around to catch it. We were way over to the right, seats 36 and 38, or maybe it was 38 and 40, I forget. Right in front of the crew under the popup tents on Stone's side.

Seriously, they stop Morello, who came all the way from New Zealand, and tell her she can't take her flag in, actually make her throw it away _ but someone is able to smuggle these things in? (I'm assuming it's sizable.)

That's not a potshot at security. I thought they were really good, and quite pleasant.

Yeah I saw this as well and when it got stuck under the roof I was extremely worried that the roof was going to catch on fire and that's how PJ20 was going to end because of some moron. So glad that didn't and so glad as it sounds, no one was hurt beacuse last night and the entire weekend were truly amazing.

Since he put so much thought into what songs and during which part of the lyrics to release these things (and not as much thought into whether or not it was a good idea) the least they can do is play something appropriate, like "Whipping" maybe, while they pummel his ass.

Maybe he should have just released doves or something. Flaming, explosive doves.

I too saw this and was in fear of the pavilion going up in flames. I would have been so pissed. The things look cool don't get me wrong, but doing that at a venue of 30K+ people was not a smart idea.

I am glad no one was hurt as far as I know. That would have been horrible.

It looked like a flimsy laundry bag that came up to my waist. I could have snuck it in I barely got searched. Guess tea lights are easy to sneak in. It would have been a nightmare if they were super strict with searching folks but thanks to douchebags like this class act maybe that's what needs to happen.

If he was going to put so much thought into it, fucking figure out how to do it with something non flammable. Hope they found the guy and banned him from future Pearl Jam shows. This could have been really bad. I'm glad it wasn't but I'm still really angry about it.

I was in 203 YY staring right at it, it kept flipping around, the whole time I'm watching I am thinking of an escape route for my wife and I, and than thinking about how crushing this would be to the band...and than it blew away...but that scared the shit out of me for a few seconds...would the roof have caught that easy?

we were on the deck, at the right of the field and thought what an incredibly stupid thing to do. Especially when Eddie mentioned the disasters at concerts in Belgium and Indiana this summer
  • They sold these things at fireworks stands by us this year. We saw one floating through the sky on July 2nd and were very confused by what it was. Then we saw it at the stand the next day, bought one, and set it on its way in our neighborhood.

And those things TRAVEL. Fast and with good distance. A person mentioned they're usually set off over water, it would have to be a large body of water, like a Great Lake or the ocean to be able to guarantee it would land in water. I wouldn't be surprised if the range of those things is over 5 miles.

If you want to google, try "sky lantern" or even "wish lantern".
AskPearlJam: PearlJama101-guest says: Who's idea was it for Eddie to play banjo on "Soon Forget"?
Eddie: I don't know whose idea it was but it was turned down.
