Pearl Jam’s Forthcoming Album, Backspacer, Out September 21st on Universal/Island Records

The live concert audio can be accessed by inserting the new ‘Backspacer’ into a personal computer or by clicking the link provided by iTunes with the album purchase.

The gigs available for download with the purchase of ‘Backspacer’ are Halifax (22/09/05), Philadelphia (03/10/05), Santiago (21/11/05), Chicago (17/05/06), Grand Rapids (19/05/06), Camden (28/05/06), E Rutherford (06/03/06), San Francisco (16/07/06), New York (25/06/06), Hartford (27/06/08) and Mansfield (28/06/08).

Well, I have been to four of those shows, have all but two of them on bootleg... soooo.. I'd say a little anti climactic. O well, so much for spanning Pearl Jam's career

Crying shame it doesn't say "Vic" anywhere in there...
If these were going to be recent shows, it would have been nice to see the Vic or maybe some Europe 2007 shows in there ... basically anything that we don't already have in official bootleg format.

I gotta say that I am more than just a little disappointed at this news...

Yeah - that's a huge kick in the crotch. Why not just say they'll have access to 2 'official bootlegs' instead of implying that its something that it clearly is not.

Of course, now I'm WISHING for those audience recorded sounding bootlegs a la 12/31/92

Hopefully FLAC. If so, then this is something new since the 2005 shows were previously available only in mp3. I guess we'll see.

Wait, Universal Music RUSSIA?!?! How reliable can THAT be? Even if it is, I wonder if there will be different shows made available for different geographic regions... I'm going to reserve judgement on this one until I know more.

I'm still amused that people are upset over this. You do realize that this 'promotion' isn't trying to draw in the big fans, right?? They already have your loyalty, and money.

The whole point of this is to bring in NEW fans, and what the hell would someone who is just getting into the band gain from having a concert recording of a show from 15 years ago??

Maybe so. But it's a little misleading then to use terms like "vault shows" and "spanning the bands career"

I think a big part of it was just wishful thinking. a lot of our disappointments with this band are of our own making. however, if I could only make one request of this band, it would be to open up the vault, so I was really hoping that would happen, but I dont realistically think we'll see any vault releases until 10-15 years down the road. sad.

True, but did we ever get those terms stated in an official press release from the band, or Target??

I think it has all just been speculation on the part of the fans/music journalist. I could be wrong, hell I probably am wrong, I just don't ever remember reading those exact words in anything official.
  • My guess is what they meant by shows that :"span the band's career" is that these shows have songs from the beginning of Pearl Jam "Ten to "Self-Titled". So they had to be recent concerts. Makes sense if they are trying to get new people interested in some of the albums that didn't sell so well.
  • Kinda disappointing.... well doesn't change the fact that Backspacer will ROCK...

is it possible the band cant offer us "older" shows without negotiating a big time deal with Sony? I wonder if they jumped thru hurdles to get us the New york New Year's eve show a few years ago etc? Maybe this is the reason all the shows are so recent? After they left Sony

I had no expectations about what shows would be released so this doesn't really bother me. I think some people set themselves up for disappointment by making assumptions about what shows we were going to get. If the 10C edition allows for show downloads, I'll be getting Philly 05 and Hartford 08 as I have not heard those yet....and yes I know I could download Philly now for free if I wanted to :)

This is pretty weak if it is true. I get what someone said about trying to bring new fans in, but if you offer 11 shows, what would be the harm in offering say, 1 from '92, 2 from '93-'95, 1 from '96, 1 from '98, and the other 6 from 2000 and beyond? Also, PJ knows the big fans are crazy, and some of them would go out and buy 5 copies of the album just to get all the downloads. The term "vault" was used, and the band and their representatives have to know, that anytime they throw that word out there, the big fans are going to assume that means shows from before 2000, or shows from after 2000 that were never officially released (Vic, etc.)
words seem so out of place.

I wouldn't think that would matter. If sony owns the rights to the older songs then they own the rights to the songs no matter what years they were played. I could be wrong.
