KILLER.

about 2 weeks ago, my beautiful chloe, right in front of me and a friend, killed a squirrel.
yesterday while my mom was visiting, she captured and killed a mouse.
today, she was going nuts in the yard and i knew there was another animal lurking....she lept over a 2 foot fence i have around some plantings into part of the garden she knows she's not allowed (and has never done that before) then lept back out with a baby raccoon in her mouth that she proceeded to quickly and violently shake until she broke the poor things neck.

:? :(
ack!

she then proudly laid down next to her kill, as she did yesterday and a few weeks earlier. she is not a young dog either, 11, but she apparently still got it going on. and yes, i am way too much of a pussy to pick up the dead carcass......thank bejeebus mr. dream gets home in less than 2 hours.

i present to you the face of a killer:

luckily, in the 15 years we've owned our house, never seen a skunk.
honestly, it just amazes me, apparently our suburban backyard has turned into animal kingdom, and apparently our pointer mix turned into a killer! i mean, she is supposed to be a pointer, not killer! :D

What a vicious looking beast! ;)

Many years ago we had a dog named Sadie that was quite the mighty huntress. She chased anything that moved and killed a few mice over the years. She also used to chase the lizards in our yard which we thought was pretty funny since they were WAY faster than she was. But one day she cornered a big one by the porch and killed it. She came trotting up the steps with the lizard hanging out of her mouth and all we could say was AAGH! :wtf:

So years later, with a change of residence and doggie line-up, we've been living at our present residence 3-4 years. There are many feral cats in the neighborhood and we often see them in the yard of the vacant house behind us. I go outside one morning to find Pete and Buffy strangely interested in one part of the yard. When I go to check, there are 2 dead kittens. They aren't newborns but are still fairly small. Doesn't look like the dogs killed them but there they are. Since handling dead animals is my prince's responsibility, I wasn't going to do anything until he got home. But then I look up to see the dogs dragging the kittens. This is too much and I am forced to dispose of them myself.

I told my vet about it not long after that and he pointed out that even though dogs have been domesticated a long time, they are descended from wild animals and they still have strong hunting instincts.

Well, my dogs are supposed to herd, not hunt! They do tend more toward herding though.

Maybe she is doing it to seek praise? Considering after she kills it she lies next to it as a presentation?

I have no idea, shot in the dark..i guess

You may want to consider curbing your dog's behavior. I'm sure there are articles on how to do this. Poor animals she's killing. Soon it will be a neighbor's cat who is accidentally walked in your yard.

As an animal lover (and a vegetarian) I'm pretty concerned with all animals, but if my dog started doing this I'd consider getting a paintball gun or something else that you can quickly from afar shock the dog with to stop it from killing. If every time he goes after an animal he gets a hard snap on his butt, I think he'll not want to do it any more... but that's just me. ...and I'm sure a number of you will disagree.

But either way, I wouldn't let my animal kill other animals.

Thats a really good point u make there
And it kinda relates to my thoughts in that animals dogs can't differentiate between these animals. You cant teach them the difference between a squirrel and a skunk, a rabbit and a cat. So while it may not be a huge deal to some if your cat or dog kills small rodents, it is to me and may be to others, different if your pet killed a cat or a neighbors pet rabbit, or whatever. And i know the OP was concerned w/ the kittens...whether or not they died at the paws of chole killer, we dont know now, but you would have to assume that they did. Even if you just shot off a bb gun into the air or tossed a can filled with change onto the ground, to scare the dog from going after that animal...just something to try and curb the behavior...because you certainly dont want to be responsible for the neighbor's pet turning up dead in your back yard.
