I've been critical of buying bloated files, but I bought the 192/24 version. Sounds pretty good to these ears. It's hard for me to tell if it has been remastered as I haven't listened to the album much in the past decade. But if this is going to be pressed to vinyl, it should sound pretty good.
I honestly feel digital gets a bad rap because of the way it's been utilized in the recording process. With storage as big and cheap as it is these days, there really is no reason to not record/master stuff to it's highest potential.

But aren't most releases in 2017?
B Sides, I think what's been figured out is BoB got them to record everything digital instead of analog because he's an idiot, so all their reissues and originals can only be so good. BoB fucked PJ. This has all been discussed before.
Again, based on my limited understanding of the recording process, I thought it would have more to do with how the technology was originally utilized when they recorded the masters.
You're exactly right about the technology used when they recorded the masters. But it has also to do with what the popular format was at the time. In the 90s, CD was king. Vinyl and cassettes were dead. So they started recording in digital because a lot of the early analog-to-digital conversions for CDs in the 80s sounded awful. After the iPod was introduced, everything shifted to making lossy audio sound as good as possible with crappy ear buds. Dynamic range went completely out the window in favor of compression. Riot Act was born in this environment. It's kind of harsh to blame Brendan O'Brien for this, as it was happening across the industry.
BoB is not the idiot. I'm the idiot for buying bloated files with poor dynamic range. And they'll keep doing this while there are people like me buying it. I tried to resist Uncle Neil's Pono nonsense, but I've fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
Yeah I just don't like BoB in general so I blame him. Other bands in the time period still recorded analog
And Riot Act is considered one of their best sounding vinyls, so there is no reason for a digital version to not sound good.
It's somewhat like a recent experience I had at the thrift store. They had 12 of the 15 "Oldies But Goodies" label CDs for a buck apiece. I bought them because the song selection is amazing...where else would I get 200 oldies from the '50s and '60s for 12 bucks? I went online to do some research about them and was shocked to discover the complete set going for 200 dollars on amazon. But then I noticed on the discs that they used a "Waring FDS" mastering technique. Searching for that led me to a Steve Hoffman forum link where they absolutely blasted the sound quality of those discs. There is much debate on that forum about sound quality, but it was universally agreed that the OBG discs were absolute crap. Apparently they used third or fourth generation tapes as the source which introduced speed problems. They also converted mono recordings to stereo poorly.
So, I was happy to get cheap music. But then I wasn't when I realized I had cheap quality. So, which should I feel? Sometimes, I feel like too much information can be a bad thing. Ignorance is bliss. If it makes you happy...(I won't finish they lyric, lol).
