Tim Robbins PJ description in Lance Mercer's 5x1

brianluxbrianlux Moving through All Kinds of Terrain. Posts: 40,721
First off, it's too bad this book is so scarce and expensive (currently a few out there at $48 and up used on-line, rarely seen in stores), especially when Place/Date is so easy to find and inexpensive. Same photographer (Mercer), similar kind of book but way different price.

Anyway, having at last added Mercer's 5x1 to my collection, one of the things that impresses me very much about it is Tim Robbins contribution. This has been posted elsewhere here (about 5 years ago) but it still rings true to me. Robbins said:

"Things I like about Pearl Jam:
They are consistently excellent live.
They don't gouge their fans at the box office.
Great poster art and T-shirts.
We won't be hearing Evenflow in advertisements for cars.,
hair conditioner, or feminine hygiene products.
They support indie bands.
They don't do cheese.
None of them golfs regularly.
They play through injuries.
When you play their albums backwards you hear Howard
Zinn reading Peoples History of the United States*.
When i tried to get them to drink after-hours on tour, they
cared enough about their audience the next night to
go to their rooms and sleep.
No flash pots."

Pretty much right on.

*Zinn's contribution is cool too.

Good stuff Brian. I wish I knew you were looking for this book! Anyways, glad you scored a copy. I don't know why but I always liked the picture taken inside the plane.

Not a big Tim Robbins fan, but he did sum up the band pretty well.

Hey, thanks WYTM! Yeah, Ed falling asleep with his head cocked sideways- I hope he didn't get a sore neck!

The one thing I would like to have seen differently about the book would have been some brief notes in the back about each shot. I really like the one of Jack Irons and his lady (wife probably?) with their legs entwined, resting between those big rocks. It peaks my curiosity- what is this interesting looking place? Oh well, great photos in any case, and an excellent addition to my PJ book collection.

I'm not sure it can be said any longer that they don't do cheese, but most of those points are accurate.

Tim Robbins was about 20ft from me at the LA1 '13 show...it was a trip for a guy from a Canadian city where celeb sightings are limited to NHL players to see the guy from Shawshank Redemption air guitaring and singing along to PJ.

I've filed my love of golf under 'guilty pleasure' since George Carlin gave me a complex about playing....and that was before people worried too much about water in North america.

Golfing in Scottsdale in the spring - all that green grass in the desert - made me wonder how long we have before golf becomes a symbol of class war in some kind of dystopian mad max world

Haha! I can picture Robbins rocking out to Pearl Jam. Fun!

I recently saw the excellent documentary, Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia. Tim Robbins' interviews in the extras are great. He talks about interesting memories of have know Vidal. Excellent bio/documentary.

Golf becoming a symbol of class war! Mad Max on the links! Golf balls loaded with nitro glycerin! This Blockbuster staring Pearl Jam, Tim Robbins, golf, the late Gore Vidal, the Ghost of George Carlin and all your favorite Mad Max characters, coming to a theater near you soon!

Can't recall which of the VFC shows it was at, but I seem to recall turning a corner on my way inside the arena and walking past Tim as he's hanging back and speaking with some fans. I remember the man's height - I'm 6'1 but seemed short in comparison.

Good question. Looks like his Facebook page hasn't been updated since last year.

He ripped off quite a few fans, here and elsewhere, for prints never shipped. Then he was diagnosed with cancer? His daughter was trying to crowdfund to cover his expenses, and it was posted here then removed after the previous fraud was brought up. Just a bad situation all around.

I saw him at the Reading, Pa. show. He was huge and his head was enormous. pretty cool to have seen him though.

Lance was very cool. I was able to go to a book signing a few years back at the Morrison gallery in nyc, and he took the time to answer all my questions. Anyway after re-reading the Robbins thing...What does "no flash pots" mean?
