I prefer the LB version (not a massive fan either way, but it's not at all bad. I like it fine). I just don't think SBM belongs on that album. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a holiday single B-side.

Uke version is far superior to LB version. To my ear...this is not even close.
And I agree with everyone...don't really see why this was put on LB. I am sure that the band had something else that would fit better (thematically or sonically) on LB.

I really prefer the sound of the band on this song, although I also enjoy the Uke version. I guess I like them both as each has merit. However, if I had to choose, I'd pick the LB one.
If they were shipped individually ....like in a mystery Sleeping By Myself vinyl...which one would weigh more? I have decided that weight is the ultimate determiner of what is better....once I know that answer I will feel confident with my decision....
The Uke version has always felt morely loney to me. The band sound just sounds too jolly IMO
Totally agree. The full band version is way to jolly. I actually laughed out loud when I first heard it. It's almost ridiculously peppy. I don't skip it but the contrast between the lyrics and feel is too much for me to keep a straight face. I love the uke version tho

Ha! Glad you laughed too. Ironically playing SBM on the uke is a very fun song to play...
I don't love this song, but I feel very strongly that they should have left it off Lightning Bolt. Playing it live with Pearl Jam is fine, but I don't see why an Ed solo song needed to take up room on a Pearl Jam record.
I do like when they play Setting Forth live every now and then, but that's mostly because it was a Matt Cameron request
I didn't mind it on Uke Songs. I even would have been ok with it if they messed around with a full band version for Bridge School or something.
That being said, there is absolutely no reason for this song to be on Lightning Bolt. A really good album could have been great with another solid tune in there instead.
Also, I, too, don't understand why it was shoehorned into LB. Love the song and Uke album, but If they were looking for something to cover, there must be 100 threads on the Porch dedicated to that topic.

Yeah, add me to this confusion! I didn't think the poll would remotely be this close, and definitely don't think the song fits in well on LB.

The reason it was on Lightning Bolt is because it fit conceptually. In my opinion, the reason it sounds so peppy is because it's celebratory. Whereas the Uke Songs version is not.

Nothing about the lyrics says "peppy" to me. Solo version or band version. I don't think the tempo at which it's played changes that.
Tempo does not, but context does. Context is the key to understanding the Lightning Bolt version, and the reason for it being peppy or uptempo or jolly, or whatever adjective people want to pair with it.
What other songs does it fit with contextually on the album? Or how does it fit within the context of the album as a whole? Certainly not Future Days, Yellow Moon, Infallible, LB, I don't think I need to go on. The lyrics (of this song in particular) do not change with context. Nor do I think the implication of those lyrics changes.

Why do the same song twice?
I think Of the Earth would have fit better.

For those who love the LB version -why, what is it that hooks you in (or is it you just hate the sound of a uke?)
