As the nation prepares to mark Veterans Day, Democracy Now! has learned that Iraq War veteran Tomas Young has died just weeks before his 35th birthday. Young was paralyzed in 2004 shortly after arriving in Iraq. He went on to become one of the nation’s most prominent antiwar U.S. veterans speaking out against the invasion and occupation of Iraq. He was featured in Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro’s documentary, "Body of War." On Tuesday, Donahue will join us on Democracy Now! to talk aboug Young’s life.

In 2013, Young made headlines and appeared on Democracy Now! when he announced that he had decided to end his life by discontinuing his medicine and nourishment, which came in the form of liquid through a feeding tube. But he later changed his mind, saying, "I want to spend as much time as possible with my wife, and no decent son wants his obituary to read that he was survived by his mother."

Young has been interviewed on Democracy Now! several times over the years.

    Very upsetting to see this. Was at the Portland show last year that Tomas attending. Very inspiring to hear Ed talk about him.

    this was horrible news to hear and thank you Dimi for posting it as I didn't have the strength to do it. This young man has impacted my life in so many ways like no other person who I never met. I will continue my work as his life will be a legacy carried on forever. May he finally be at peace. G-D bless him and his loved ones.

    RIP Thomas, it was an honor meeting you in Kansas City in 2010. And thank you for serving our country with such loyalty, and honor. I only wish they could have given you the same loyalty with which you served! The world just lost lost a living saint.

    Let us remember the bravest actions he took in his life, not enlisting and going to war, but speaking out vociferously on the atrocity of war and the nefarious intentions for which it is waged. He stood against an enormous wave and he didn't back down! An inspiration!

    I won't forget seeing him at a few shows over the years. He made a difference. The letter he wrote to Cheney was scalding, pure white hot truth that left a deep impact on me, but I'm sure never even phased the evil one...that's ok, Tomas Young was a brave man, and he will be remembered. He made a fucking difference. No More!
    I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

    ...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

    I have to say, it may seem trivial to some, but the Royals going to the World Series, to game 7. . . I only hope he was well enough to enjoy it. I know he was a huge fan. I wish the outcome was different, but the ride is so exciting. Tomas was one of the reasons I was rooting for KC.
