I'm a 27 year old kiwi who lives down in Christchurch in the South Island. I, like most of you have been a big pearl jam fan ever since I was a little kid. I won't bore you with those details but needless to say since I was 7 Pearl Jam have been my favourite band and that will never change. That band has helped shape who I am today and for that I am very grateful. One of my best friends Tim 'Zandy' Zandbergen was also a huge Pearl Jam fan. We became friends due to our mutual love and respect for the band. We would often talk about them for ages and then after a few drinks we would be jumping around with our air guitars or standing up with our arms linked while singing Pearl Jam tunes at the top of our lungs (sounding fucking terrible of course). However if there was ever one tune that we would always came back to, it was Black. In my opinion, and his, Black is the greatest song ever written.

Around 4 years ago Pearl Jam played a show in Christchurch and we were both there. It was an unbelievable night and the show was incredible. I will never forget that moment, seeing them in front of me after all these years of listening to them. Unfortunately they did not play Black. Don't get me wrong, it was an epic set list and a great night but as I was walking out of that concert I promised myself and Zandy that we would see that song live.

Sadly on January 19th 2012 Zandy died in water skiing accident. It was a freak accident and obviously I was devastated. I had never lost a friend before and it cut me up in a big way. Zandy was someone that everyone wanted to know and be friends with and he wanted to know and be friends with anyone around him. He was a truly great friend.

Pearl Jam was played at various stages throughout the funeral and his love for the band was mentioned at numerous stages throughout the service. Needless to say it has made listening to Pearl Jam even more special than it previously was.

I am flying up to Auckland on January 17 to watch Pearl Jam headline the Big Day Out festival. It is going to be a special time especially considering it will be so close to the 2nd anniversary of Zandys death. My hope is that they play Black. I know that Eddie often writes the set list just before the gig so I know that the set list won't be set in stone yet and I am curious if there is any possible way to get this request through to the band and/or someone with connections or ties to the band. I know this is a huge ask and I may be wasting my time but I won't know if I don't try. Thanks for reading. Cheers
