New Shins Album

  • they have had quite a few personell changes. I think only james is the only member who has remained from previous incarnations.

The drummer i believe at one time was famous for getting kicked out and then having some sort of mexican food cart stand thing in portland.

Just like I wish i had seen Arcade Fire when Funeral blew up, in 2004/2005, I saw the Shins in 2011, but also wish i had seen them right when Garden State came out, in 2004.

That's true but James Mercer really is The Shins.

I am really jazzed about this album. I doubt it will match my favorite album of 2012 to-date (Van Halen), but if it comes even close on the awesomeness scale, I will be thrilled.

I have all their other albums and like them all a lot...so fingers crossed!

It's going to be leagues better than Van Halen. But, I hate Van Halen so... Haha

    Heh.

Well, yeah...if you don't like them to begin with, it's a bit hard to make a comparison.

But I'm pretty much a hard-rockin' kind of girl. ;) And most Van Halen fans will tell you that the new album is the best one they have put out in a really long time. I personally think it's their best one since '1984'...which is their best album. So you can imagine how thrilled I am with them right now.

But to put it in Shins terms...if this upcoming album is as good as Chutes Too Narrow, I will be one happy camper. :D Chutes, for me, is The Shins best work to-date...and if this one meets or exceeds that standard, I will be very, very pleased.

I think The Shins have had some personnel changes though, haven't they? I think I recalled reading that a while back...although it was a while ago and my memory sort of sucks, as a rule. I have their 3 records...but I must confess that I don't keep up with them outside the music itself nearly as much as I keep up with bands at the top of my all-time fave band list. Sounds like you might know more about that sort of thing that I would. Do you anticipate any changes to the music style as a result of any personnel changes? Just curious!

In any case, I like The Shins enough to buy the next record. Hope it's a good one!

My favorite is Oh, Inverted World. It was Lo-Fi and brilliant. The music was great.

The entire band is new and honestly I'm not too worried. They sounded great on Fallon covering Pink Floyd and I have heard from people that they still sound really good.

Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse is playing the drums too so I have a lot of confidence in the group... And besides, Mercer pretty much is The Shins.

hear them live tonight in NYC at 10 pm on NPR performing songs from the new album. :)

They also are playing the Sweetlife Festival in MD on Apr. 28 (unfortunately they are the only band worth seeing this time, IMO :( )

i dont think they have made a bad record. I think Wincing the Night Away is terribly underrated. But that album is so textured and brilliant.

Im looking forward to what this thing sounds like and of course James' lyrics. The first 3 albums pretty much sum up my 20's
Wincing the Night Away is my favorite album of all time.. The Shins are my second favorite band to Pearl Jam.. Really liked Broken Bells as well.. I am about as excited about this new album as a new Pearl Jam album. :D

Anyone get a chance to listen to it? Sounded decent. Luckily one of our local radio stations broadcast it live (WXPN). They played about 5 songs off the new album as well as cold and favs. Only played for a little over an hour though (least that's when they stopped broadcasting on the radio.

    setlist:

    "Kissing The Lipless"
    "Caring Is Creepy"
    "Simple Song"
    "Bait And Switch"
    "Saint Simon"
    "It's Only Life"
    "September"
    "New Slang"
    "The Rifle's Spiral"
    "Australia"
    "No Way Down"
    "Phantom Limb"
    "One By One All Day"
    "Port Of Morrow"

The new keyboardist sucks... At least at this performance.

Edit: Could be the sound in there... not the best

I've known about the Shins for about 5 or 6 years, they've been recommended to me by friends... and I hate to say it, but it took Saturday Night Live to get me to listen to them... I cannot get enough of Simple Song... I've been listening to it (by playing the video) all day... I need to get a version without the talking and sound effects, although the video is brilliant! The 2nd song they played last night didn't leave much of an impression on me, but I'm going to check out the whole album. It was interesting to find out that the singer James Mercer is 41.

I've been basically the same way. I've been aware of them and actually downloaded their albums a few years ago, but I just watched SNL about an hour ago and I'm firing up Wincing The Night Away right now. I actually liked the 2nd song on SNL much better than the first. I'm now pumped about seeing them at Bonnaroo this June.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

  • i was reading an interview with james mercer from 2004, and its amazing how much things have changed, both for the shins and for the indie music world. in the interview, they were discussing the craziness surrounding james liscening New Slang to Mcdonalds, and then how bizaare it was that the shins were becoming famous, were getting songs in tv shows and on movies. The interviewer was discussing all this like it was unique, and bizaare.

How different things are in 2012! Now that type of thing is so commonplace, in many ways its not really even noteworthy. indie bands are on tv and in movies, and in soundtracks all the time. the fact they were on snl the other day is cool, but they are really just a normal big tent indie band right now. And have been for some time. Head and the Heart were used as the final song in the final episode of Chuck. While thats awesome, and any exposure they get is great, its sort of normal now.

Im a little nervous though about the lyrics for the new record. alot has happened since 2007 when Wincing came out. James now is a father, and it seems like he is happy. So much of what makes The Shins so great is the lyrics of James mercer, which often revolve around not knowing ones place in society and the world, feeling unsure, lost, confused, scared, anxious. I dont really know how a Shins album would sound like, or how much i'd enjoy it, if james comes out with a happy album.

Good point. The music was always really happy and the lyrics were kind of dark. Very interesting indeed
